Yes. Hojo's research would take around 170 years to complete, and in that time Aerith would die. He wanted a being with Ancient blood that would survive a long time, so he was hoping Red's longevity would carry over into the offspring.

I only noticed it about a year ago, when I tried playing through the game again. It made me gasp when I realized what was going on. I must admit that a part of me really wished that Red XIII would go for it. Eh, I’m just demented, I guess.
