When I say cliche, I don't mean the stuff that's always in FF games like Chocobos or Moogles. I'm talking about stuff you don't normally see. You may want it changed or not. Usually cliches are unintentional, not intentional like airships or chocobos.

-most of the males in a game look kinda girly (looking at you Vaan and Larsa)
-there's almost always a hyper girl (ex. Yuffie or Rikku)
-There's a character that makes you wonder why they are there in the first place (Quina, Cait Sith, etc.)
-There's always a Sephiroth fanboy/girl around

Final Fantasy does a fairly good job of hitting up all 192 RPG cliches. (http://project-apollo.net/text/rpg.html)

Of course, that's because Final Fantasy created most of these cliches in the first place .

Do bad translations count as cliches?

Most of these can be found in FFVII. In fact, several of these were named after FFVII.

repetitive blonde, male protagonists (at least in the Final Fantasy games i've played). not like i have a problem with it, but some aren't that good looking.

FFVIII...Cloud Strife
FFIX...Zidane Tribal
FFX...Tidus
FFXII...Vaan
FFT...Ramza
FFTA...Marche

Major characters that are halfling of some alien, supernatural or "other" race of beings. Espers, Cetra, Lunarians...

Death of a major character (though VIII and IX don't really apply...)

A crystal in some form or other, whether it's of major importance like the crystals in FFI,III,IV,V,IX, and XII or just minor things that don't cross your mind (FFVI,VII,VIII, and X)

The fact that airships are almost always connected to Cid (only four exceptions I can think of)

Amnesia. Nuff said.

These, as well as a lot of other named cliches in this thread, really only apply to the later games (FFVII and beyond).

Considering blonde is one of three natural hair colours (blonde, black and brown, excluding grey since that's an old person's hair colour and therefore unlikely to be featured on a young male protagonist), I think the examples you point out make up about a third of the FF series so I think it makes for a good statistical spread of hair colour :p. Besides, even if what I just said is complete bull, its just hair colour :p (By repetative, do you mean stupid? I would say that Could (in VII BTW, not VIII) and Tidus fit that pattern fairly well, but Zidane does not.)

Cliche's are great for immediately recogniseable characters. Just think of how much we'd have to think of, say, Squall's character to assign him an emotional role if it was not so very damned clear he's emo. Cliche = timesaver ;)

FF1,6,X-2 - No male protagonist.
FF2 - Firion had blue hair (in two out of three versions) so we can discount him.
FF3 - In the DS version, Luneth is blond
FF4 - Paladin Cecil is blond
FF5 - Brown
FF7 - Blond
FF8 - Brown
FF9 - Blond
FF10 - Blond
FF12 - Blond
FFT - Blond
FFTA - Blond

Out of the 10 protagonists with 'normal' hair colour, 8 are blond. So you could say it's a cliche in FF games.

^^ I stand corrected then. Yay for the cliche!

FF8 had a major character "die". Even though he really didn't, you at least thought he did.

The blonde hair can be found in most of the FF characters. (I'm from the 3D generation so I've never truly played the original 6 except for 1 and 2 which I'm nowhere near beating).

FFVII- Cloud, Cid

FFVIII- Quitis, Zell, Seifer,

FFIX- Zidane

FFX- Tidus, Rikku

Which normally wouldn't be a problem but...

FFXII- Vaan, Penelo, Ashe, Fran, Basche, and Baltheir (not sure. looks kinda brownd). Basically ALL of the cast if FFXII have blonde hair.

The most feminine character wears a thong (ie. Rikku, Kuja)

Actually, Luneth's hair is more silver than blonde, and Cecil's hair is kinda purple-ish white, depending of the sprite.

IX has a major character die, but since you don't actually witness it (it was mentioned in the ending) I felt it shouldn't count. I could technically count Squall's mother; but once again you never really witness it, so I don't feel it counts.

As for the blonde debate, Cecil isn't a blonde. He's albino. If you look at the origianl character design and character portrait, you'll see he's actually an albino. Butz is also an albino in the original character designs and FMV scenes.

Red hair is the least common of the four common hair colors. Black, brown, blonde, and red hair, in order of most common to least common.

That isn't directed at you, rubah, as I'm sure you already knew that. :P

Albinos don't have green eyes like Cecil's, though. I blame the white hair on his Lunarian heritage.

Acvtually, they can. The whole "albino's have red eyes" is not true. They can actually have different color eyes. Though I agree that the white hair is due to his Lunarian hair.;)

I know they don't all have red eyes, most albinos actually have pale blue or grey eyes though.

Anyway... *puts the thread back on its rails*
