If you want to find good animé, why are you asking people to list ones that are "not so favourite"?

Irresponsible Captain Tylor. Funniest series ever made, and the best ending to a series I have ever seen.

Tenchi Muyo! Watch the OVA. The movies are wonderful as well. Avoid Tenchi in Tokyo cause it was made by people who hate children and puppies.

Rahxephon, It's like Eva for the first half of series and then evolves into it's own monster of a headcase.

Wolf's Rain. Cause it's beautiful.

Like Renmiri, anything by Hayao Miyazaki.

Gungrave, mafia shennanigans, betrayal, violence, drama, and ...zombies:confused:

Naruto, I know people don't care cause it's "mainstream" but find a fansub copy of the series (the fansub was kind enough not to translate Naruto's obnoxious catch phrase) It's a very deep an well written story about growing up, being accepted, honor, friendship and believing in your dreams. Even better, it's actually well written and doesn't feel too forced most of the time.

Robotech or Macross (depending on how much of a purist you are) The world is saved by a idol singer...

Night on the Galactic Railroad, a beautiful tale about growing up, life, death, and learning to let go.

Captain Herlock or Galaxy Express. Cause Leiji Matsumoto is a genius.

That was more than five but I have like thirty other series I could recommend like Sailor Moon, Ranma 1/2, Casshan the Robot Hunter, Vampire Hunter D, Robot Carnival, Kare Kano...

Depends what you are looking for.

-Kyou Kara Maou! is all around good. A nice balance of humour and drama.
-Fushigi Yuugi put me through an emotional roller coaster sometimes it felt as if the stuff was too soap opera-ish. Nonetheless a good fantasy series.
-xxxHOLiC it is nice with humour, seriousness and a bit of philosophy.
-Sailor Moon, more specifically the last season, Sailor Stars
-Tsubasa Chronicle
-Elfen Lied, if you like goriness go for it.
-The Vision of Escaflowne

Noir is really good. I also love what I've seen of Full Metal Alchemist. And Love Hina is pretty great too.

You should avoid Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gankutsuou) until you watch the other stuff that some of these people are saying is 'good'. Noir is 'good', Gungrave is 'good', etc... But if you decide to watch Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo, it will likely destroy your desire to watch anything else.

It is that awesome.

RahXephon is still my favourite anime right now, so I wholeheartedly second Wolf Kanno's reccomendation there.

I compiled this list (http://jktrix.myanimelist.net/) in about 1/2 an hour a few months ago. It's not complete (and I've started/watched a lot of anime since then so it's way out of date), but it should be a pretty good guide. Anything I rated 8 and above are great shows, 9 is an awesome show, 10 is a show that you should make every effort to watch. Juuni Kokki is known as 12 Kingdoms. 7 is a show that is still really good, but ultimately missable. 2x2=Shinobuden is hilarious, start to end, but compared to Azumanga (rated 9) it falls a little short. Etc.

'Course, it's all opinion. Still, Gankutsuou should be on your list. Perhaps you could just pre-empt the other stuff and start there, and work your way down.

I can recommend two good animes that my girlfriend forced me to watch with her, and I loved them both.

Wolf's Rain and Ouran High School Host Club. Look them up.

Also from my old favourites Silverfang ( the dog anime) is still the best anime I've ever seen, I just aboslutely love it. If there's still people out there who hasn't seen the Silverfang series...you've missed a lot. Go get them now. New Weed series aren't bad either. It's a story about Silverfang's son.

Ew, no. Read the manga of that instead; it's actually canon.

Karin is pretty good, and is not, as the opening may imply ('cause it's really, really fanservice-y), hentai. All the other ones I can think of have been named already.

Oh, and Inuyasha, no matter how much hype it gets, is not actually that good.

I love the TV series cause their closer to the feel of the manga. The movies are overrated. I just didn't mention it cause I usually suggest older series cause god knows most people never think about them. I figured most people would cover the more recent stuff.

No, no, no. >.< That OVA was hardly watchable. Go with the manga.

Some of my favorites:
~Wolf's Rain
~Revolutionary Girl Utena (avoid if you don't like artsy fartsy, though)
~X (though the manga is preferable by far)
~The Twelve Kingdoms
~His and Her Circumstances

Inuyasha is a great series overall, but not in English, and not so much lately (concerning the manga). If you watch only the anime, though, that doesn't matter.

Inuyasha is my personal favorite. However, if you choose to watch Inuyasha, and love it, reading the manga to find out what happens after the last episode might leave you in a bloodthirsty rage to dismember Rumiko Takahashi (creator) once a week. =O

Oh, and it is quite lengthy! It has 167 episodes in total.

Its not really as good as all above, but I enjoyed "Big O" immensely when it showed on Cartoon Network. It's a short series with a very surprising ending and a curious premise: A city where every one's memories stop at 1 year ago. No one knows why or how.
