View Full Version : Do you know of any good RPG:s featuring real-time battles?

I'm a hardcore fan of games like Secret of Mana and Star Ocean, and one of the reasons is the fact you can move your chars around during the battles and hit the enemies lots of times in a row.
This just feels better than the ATB system, because it's got more action to it.
So, I'm just wondering if there are any other good RPG:s out there that use this type of battle system? :)

I'd preferably want some titles for the PSone.

The Tales games are probably some of the better Action RPGs.

Tales of Destiny 2 for PS1 is a different game than Tales of Destiny 2 for PS2. "Tales of Eternia" is the true name of PS1's TOD2, though the 'True TOD2' hasn't come outside of Japan.

I don't know any other PS1 games besides the ones that have been described, but Tales of Symphonia for Game Cube and Tales of the Abyss for PS2 have similar battle systems. Avoid Tales of Legendia. Maybe you'd like the Mana games? Legend of Mana is for PS1 but I haven't played it. I've heard bad things about it.

Just wanted to point out that both the Tales games on the PS1 (Destiny and Eternia) are really rare and expensive.

Oh, and Valkyrie Profile.

That's hardly an action RPG. It still owns though.

>>> VP1 its turn based, VP2 its like real time but more complex, because time flow only if you make a move, attack or press the analog stick..

Like Kentarou, I would suggest Legend of Mana. Combatt is a nice mix of RPG and action RPG. The screen locks in place, like a seperate battle screen. From there, you have compleat control of your character. Granted, it doesn't have a central plot, and it did change alot of things from the other mana games. However, it is a really good realtime RPG.

Aslo, any Zelda would be a good one.

Whoever said that needs to be shot multiple times. LoM is much <3.

Valkyrie Profile is action packed enough to be considered an 'action RPG', but it is turn-based. Valkyrie Profile 2 has an even more misleading battle system. I would highly recommend them if you like action-packed RPGs, nonetheless.

Any of the Tales games should do you fine (Symphonia and Abyss more specifically specify in the 'super fast awesome action packed battles' category, though I hear Tales of Destiny 2 and the Tales of Destiny Remake for the PS2 have the fastest Tales battle systems ever), Valkyrie Profile and all tri-Ace games in general (Star Ocean 3 OMG), and the Seiken Densetsu (Mana) series.

Action RPGs are  :cat:.

I think Threads of Fate is an Action RPG.

Not. An. R.P.G.

I actually did a theory class a week ago at Uni that actually changed my viewpoint on what an RPG really is. Also I now know there's no such thing as an FPS, rather SPS (second-person shooter).

As for action RPG's even though you said you'd prefer PS1 titles, I'll go ahead and recommend the Diablo series (D2:LOD being the best) for the PC since they're probably the best real-time action RPG's on the face of the planet.

I just had to go outta my way to thank you for actually knowing what an RPG is.

And yeah, any Tales game.

Posting in a thread on a forum that you signed up for is not exactly "going out of your way". Sorry to disappoint you.

I, uh, like the turn-based system. Soooooo.... Shining Force Neo though. Hahahahaha

Went out of my way to actually make a pointless post in a thread I care nothing about.

But nice try there, boss.

I feel ashamed for missing Dark Cloud 2. I'm going to go emo for about 5 minutes.

Dark Cloud 1 and 2 kick ass. Also, GET Baldur's Gate II for PC, that's a real-time game that kicks the ass of every game you know and cherish. (Except FF of couresly-doo.)

Would Vagrant Story be considered? If so, consider it.
