This is the funniest thing I have seen in awhile. They get some facts right, but they happen to fail to mention that you child has to initiate Picto Chat for it to work. Sure, they tell you how to open it, but they make it sound like the chat is on at all times. Worth a good laugh. And it does a great job of showing that the DS has awesome range in terms of wireless communication.

That makes me very angry listening to that. Not just this report by itself but the whole anti-gaming media etc, this is just another way of reaching that goal imo;-/

On a note, thats pretty cool range on my DS, i never knew that ^_^

That comic is just great tho :D Sums up a lot of my other thoughts :p

this is like the report that kids will be looking for porn on the Wii. Seriously wtf. I don't know anyone that logs into pictochat, unless they already know someone they're going to talk to on it at the time. Sigh, just trying to scare everyone about everything.

Here I was, thinking I had no Faith in Humanity. After this, I realized that I did, and it was just so minute I couldn't see it anymore. However, I believe this just killed it.

God, I love Penny Arcade.

As for the actual issue: lol.

I loved the part where it was talking about the possibility of a molester driving, seeing your kid the backseat of a car with a DS, and subsequently sending them messages. Fox is classic.

Man, I've never seen a local news channel put on a story filled with irrational sensationalism for the sake of attracting the attention of mindless idiots who don't know any better before. Wait OH SHI -

Well, at least they were more informed than with the Wii Porn. o_o In fact, this actually seems to be something parents SHOULD consider, since, as TrowaBartonIV said, molesters probably haven't thought about it until now. On the other hand, I think such a thing would happen very, VERY rarely, as the child has to not only be in pictochat, but said molester must be able to see that low in the car-door window to know that the child is pictochatting. To use pictochat, it usually has to be planned to actually get in contact with the person you want.

...

I wonder if the fat DS can go 300 feet in Pictochat. O_O

I didn't think this was absurd at all. Pedophiles aren't idiots, they've probably been useing the technology for quite a while now. I didn't find any humor in it either. You guys may think it's stupid or impossible but truth be told, it isn't. The airport example is perfect. They aren't talking about teenagers. They're talking more about five year-olds whose parents bought them DS's. Naïve children that age can wander off without their parents noticing and that's all it takes.

02-10-2007, 03:00 AM
People don't actually use Pictochat, though.

That entire thing was a joke. "OMG! She told him her address! D:" Yeah, he's in their house. >_>

Martyr
02-10-2007, 05:14 AM
I think it's definitely a legitimate threat, since any time the pictochat may be on, for any reason, it could be a pedophile's lucky day.

But on the other hand, there's probably easier ways to hunt stupid little children.

The bottom line is that you should hold your kid's hand when you're at the mall. If you don't, then pedophiles probably don't need a DS.

Well, obviously, the best way to keep a child safe is to lock them in a suitcase when not in use.

02-10-2007, 01:09 PM
Honestly, thats really REALLY stupid, is there any proof, any case with it? No.

ANY DS USERS HERE KNOW THAT NOONE IS EVER ON PICTOCHAT! honestly, im in a completely hot wifi spot everyday with my ds, and never have i once seen many people on pictochat, if any at all. Mostly its just stupid kids just chatting with their friends in school, or just gamers looking for someone to play against in a game. :P everyday, someone has to cause a hoohah because they are the ignorant person and think anything that connects a child to someone they dont know is dangerous. No one can trace Wii's or DS's, period. Parents...get over yourselves.

How the hell do you drive and pictochat at the same time?

Yar
02-10-2007, 03:44 PM
Why is this so hard to believe? THEY AREN'T TALKING ABOUT TEENAGERS HERE! They're talking about kindergarten and early elementary students' age group. Kids this old will sit in PictoChat doodling regardless of whether anyone is in there. If a pedophile sees a kid in a crowded area using a DS, they'll try to see if they are PictoChatting and if they are, try to get them. If a parent isn't keeping a watchful eye, the kid could wonder off to where ever the pedophile says "meet me". Quit saying it's absurd; it isn't. You're just very stubborn and ignorant

Roto13
02-10-2007, 03:59 PM
It IS absurd. Jesus, people are so paranoid! Letting your kid play around on Pictochat is only marginally more dangerous than letting them leave the house at all. Why do people act like being able to communicate with anyone in any way is a one way trip to kidnap-and-rapeville? If you're going to freak out over every tiny little threat to your kids safety you'll have to lock them in a box in the basement or inside of a storage facility or something. Keep an eye on your fucking kids and chill the hell out.

...Keep an eye on your smurfing kids and chill the hell out.

That's what this report was about. It told parents to watch what their kids were doing. Hell, they said the parents didn't read the instruction manual warning about children talking to strangers. The report was warning parents that, "Hey, Your child's DS can be used in a similar fashion to AOL or Yahoo! Messanger." Children this age probably haven't been warned about the dangers of chat rooms and such. The parents probably don't know kids can chat on DS's either.

They were using the DS as a scapegoat for bad parenting. "They're good parents, but they're completely oblivious about what their children are doing and it's all the DS's fault." Load of crap. These pathetic little alarmist "news" tactics should be outlawed.

I laughed so hard at how stupid that was. "It's long distance communication....MOLESTERS USE!!!!" Hmmm so I suppose under that logic the telephone, internet, telegraph, and art of letter writing are all used by molesters.

Really it's nothing but the parents faults for not telling their kids to not talk to strangers. Besides I was under the impression for the chat to work you needed the said person's ID information similar to any other form of communication so you could actually know who you were sending your messages to.

Though was I the only one who laughed when he said molesters would see your kids, while driving in the back seat, and communicate with them? The idiocy surrounding that part alone was enough for me to lose some IQ points.

02-10-2007, 06:17 PM
As soon as the line "Well, stop the music... Because [the DS] is also re-defining how vulnerable your kids are to child molesters" appeared I cringed.

How paranoid do the American media want their nation to become? Just so they can lure new viewers to their networks, out of greed news writers and anchors are fueling more paranoia, and eventually, this will probably lead to the kind of fear that can produce violence.

It will tear America apart, mark my words.

Like myspace, its not the DS thats dangerous. Its stupid kids or bad parents that are at fault for molestation. Either the parents arent telling their kids not to reveal personal information, or the dumbass kids do it anyway. Dont blame the system.

that's a target market Nintendo never even though of. This news broadcast just did that advertising for them. That's a good amount more of DS systems they'll sell now!

I still think it's awesome that it works from that far away. I now love my DS even more.

But how many parents are going to read it as such? And how many parents are gonna go on a holy crusade to bring those evil, twisted people at Nintendo down for corrupting our youth like that.

Lawl. Gotta love fear-mongering.

Well, this wasn't on CNN or some other international or nation wide channel. It was on some local Fox station in Milwaukee (never spelled, or said that word in my life). It probably won't be a big deal since I doubt that many people have seen it for it to have an effect. And because it's stupid.

Honestly, I think the DS in an airport is less likely than a guy actually walking up to a kid in the airport. For one thing, it's easier. No need to wait until the kid opens the DS, just wait until mommy goes to the Ladies' Room. I don't own a DS, so I'm not sure how hard it would be to connect to a random DS, so I'll assume it's like AOL or something similar. Even going into a public chat, I've never met anybody trying to lure me anywhere (I don't use my real name or age). So I doubt that's really the most dangerous thing you can do.

The second thing is that in order to keep kids from talking to people without mom knowing, the kid has to live in the basement, and never ever leave. And we wonder why our kids are lard-butts and play video games all day -- it's because we've become so scared that we don't let kids play outside anymore. Brilliant.
