I'm trying to break out of my tiny music niche. I figured I'd start with rap, since it's anti me anyway. Post good rap songs that aren't about bitches, hoes, drugs, and being gangsta.

All great stuff

Kanye West is ok, but I've seen Jin battle Tonedeff they both can flow, and on two different levels

Nas sucks
Lil Kim is a wanna be

Tupac is kewl

Mos Def is talented

Biggie..... not sure if I should call him a rapper.....

Foxy Brown sucks...

btw I'm talking about the Jin out of New York

Yea when I listen to a CD that promotes "Hiphop is Dead Dec. 19th 2006"

That rapper sold out to commercialism.

Plus Nas can't flow like Tonedeff.

Get Black Star - "Black Star" immediately. Mos Def and Talib Kweli are some of the best underground MC's there are. Put them together and it's just pure magic.

Track suggestions - "Definition", "Respiration"

Then grab Danger Doom - "The Mouse and the Mask" to get silly with the amazing DJ Danger Mouse (of Gnarls Barkley, Gorillaz, and The Grey Album fame) and the supervillain himself MF DOOM.

Track suggestions - "Old School", "The Mask", "Sofa King"

To end it, Grab Roots Manuva - "Brand New Secondhand" for some of the smoothest raps you'll ever hear. The fact he has a slight UK/Jamaican accent gives it some extra flavor.

Track suggestions - "Clockwork", "Motion 5000"

If you could be specific about what kind of production, tempo, or style of hip-hop you want I could give tons more suggestions.

I hate most rap, though some good songs are

Sir-mix-alot - Baby Got Back
Biggie Smalls - Hypnotize
Eminem - Mosh, When I'm Gone, Mocking Bird, Toy Soldiers
Master P. - I really miss my Homie

THough given your description forget about the first two, Even though Baby Got Back is a classic.

Assuming you don't want the stereotypical stuff, you can always go for the following.

Anything by Will Smith (often as The Fresh Prince) & DJ Jazzy Jeff. Common examples include Summertime, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Boom! Shake The Room.

A lot of stuff by Eminem don't include stuff about those things you mention, and it's actually quite good.

White & Nerdy by Weird Al.

A few songs by 2Pac are okay, along with those songs Coolio did back then.

5ive do a bit of rap!

Run DMC's stuff is also quite good.

One thing that bugs me is the whole hip hop vs. rap thing. To me if you're rapping, you're rapping, and if you're not, you're not.

A'yo, you have came to the right man if your lookin' for some good rap that not about what your implying. But just for the record, if you can't except Hip Hop or Rap music for what it is today, which includes sex volence, alcohol, drugs, money, cars and any other self incriminating thing I can think of, then you have no business listening to it. Don't insult me. Check my list out...

Eminem- Sing For The Moment, Toy Soldiers, What Ever You Say I Am, Just Lose It, With Out Me, Hollywood, Until The Lights Go Out, Mosh, White America

Bone Thugs -N- Harmony- First Of The Month, Breakdown, Days Of Our Lives, Crossroads, Change The World, If I Fall, Home

Naz- Poizon, One Mic, Your The Man, My Country

DMX- The Omen, Slippin' Fallin', I'm Ready To Met Him

2Pac- It At Easy, Lord Knows, Young N****s, Dear Momma, I Ain't Mad At You, Life Goes On, So Many Tears

I'll think of more later...

Nas - Take it in Blood, Carry on Tradition, Not Going Back, Can't forget about you, It ain't hard to tell, Small World, Nas is Like, Undying Love, Street Dreams, I gave you power, Big Things... I could go on forever. Nas is just awesome.
Also check out AZ and also Nature, both good friends of Nas and share a common style and views and Nas.

Here's some more...

2Pac- Old School,

Lil Wayne (I don't like him but he has a few good ones)- F*** The World, Husla Music.

50 Cent- Hate It Or Love It, 21 Questions

Jay-Z (I don't like him ether) Hard Knock Life

Hmm...I'll come up with more later if your still interested...

It'll be wise not to completely ignore alot of the mainstream artists, like Jay Z, Big L and 50 Cent because most of them were actually very good back in their hay day. Jay Z in particular, early to mid 90's he was better than any artist you get nowadays.

Also, nerdcore is totally rockin. I'm a huge pusher of the genre because it's so awesome and wonderful. Check out MC Frontalot (who has a ton of songs available on his site) and mc chris (he has a full album on his site) for some goodness.

I've always thought Dizzee Rascal was the far superior Grime artist. I hope he breaks into the US soon. Someone with his frantic style and crazy production is just the kind of thing mainstream US rap needs nowadays.

Public Enemy.

Yes! Chuck D is one of the most underrated MCs. When DMC (of Run DMC) says you're the best rapper he's ever heard you know you're the :skull::skull::skull::skull:. Also, if you completely ignore his media whoring the last couple years, Flavor Flav was the best hype man ever.

- Sage Francis (Genius, lyrical and lingual master, Personal Journals and A Healthy Distrust are amazing as well)
- Rakim (18th Letter and any older material)
- Cage (Horrorcore/acid rap genius, check out Hellz Winter, Waterworld and Movies for the Blind)
- Big Punisher (RIP)
- Canibus (Diverse as hell, he's mastered multiple styles, I suggest Rip the Jacker, Micclub and 2000 BC)
- Eminem (his older material, look for his Infinite and Slim Shady LP)
- AZ (AWOL is his best album hands down)
- Nas
- Jay-Z
- Freeway
- Dead Prez (Let's Get Free is an amazing album)

I just think he sounds like an idiot. He lacks lyrical content, can't flow for :skull::skull::skull::skull:, isn't all that creative and looks like a faggot with that stupid mask on. I tried to give him a chance multiple times but it didn't work out. He's the worst rapper in existence in my opinion, well one of the worst. Yeah Sugar Hill Gang is classic, listen to their 'Rapper's Delight', thats true oldie Hip Hop.

Try listening to Ugly Duckling too (their last two albums). Their not quite as complex as other artists mentioned in this thread but their a good laugh and have a light tone.

Blackalicious is pure skill, he's not controversial, philosophical or exceptionally funny, but listen to Chemical Calisthenics, A To G, and Alphabet Aerobics for speed. :)

Jurassic 5
CunninLynguists
Herbalizer (Goldrush, The Real Killer)
Fugees (classic ;))
SOME Mos Def (Speed Law is a good song)
Nas (One Mic, dont know if its your sort of theme taste but try it anyway)
Outkast (Ms Jackson, Bombs over Baghdad, Xplosion)
Pharcyde.

Well, I myself have a very large music range, I like mostly everything except modern day country, I can't sit here and say I only listen to underground rap, and rap that doesn't talk about Drugs money and hoes, because I'm sitting here with a Dr Dre shirt on. I will say that almost all new rap is getting really horrible, Nas said it best when he said hip hop is dead. Im a big fan of old school gangsta rap, like Dre, Ice Cube, Bone thugs(rep ohio:upsidedow ) NWA, and Tupac, and also more mid 90's-2000 rappers like nas, and Jay-Z. I also Like more underground, or low-key rappers like Talib Kweli, Mos Def, The roots, Dead Prez, and rappers like that.

And I will say that I like some modern Rap, like Lil' Wayne(well I dont like his own music much, but he's the best freestyler that I've ever heard) and The Game. Eminem I like but he gets Annoying, 50 Cent was alright for a while but he got annoying real quick too. But to say the least I like rap a lot, but it's still not my favorite genre.

I hate most rap with a passion for its lack of complexity, point, and um...musical notes.
However, I have found myself listening to Gym Class Heroes and Lupe Fiasco and found it rather catchy. I'd recommend them.
Oh, and Linkin Park is a brilliant combination of the two genres. I love them.

If you can't fin complexity you aren't looking in the right places.

It isn't like I'm looking for it. I just base my opinion from what I've heard on MTV, VH1, and such.

Oh wait, MTV doesn't play music hardly anymore.

Well, that right there is your problem.

Nevertheless, I have never cared for rap because there isn't really any singing in it...I like singing. Rap is just so...monotonous.

I have to say, Linkon Park definitely hits me with their tunes. Avery nifty combination, I'd say. Of course, I'm not going to lie to you guys, I like it that Gangsta Rap, Hip Hop, and all those tunes you hear today being produced. I also prefer to just chill and listen to Tupac or some Biggie, and maybe tunes from the past. For comic relief, I'd laugh at one of Will Smith's tracks--Summertime.

PP, it sounds to me that your listening to the wrong people when it comes to this genre. That's why you shouldn't judge something that obviously have more than one side to it.

As far you hazzard, I tell you like it is. Linkin' Park is a good mixture, but is for the most part punk rock. Sorry, but if I was looking for some all out Rap and Hip hop, I wouldn't go to them. And today's Gangster Rap sucks. I mean, There is a few out the pack this cool, but most sucks. The late 80s to mid 90s is THE best.

I could say the same for emo music. But does anyone listen to me when I say the same thing? No.

I love emo music. Evanescence is my new CRACK!!!! Rap is not always about drugs, women, and cars. The sound of the music is what makes rap not the message. At least thats what I believe. Girlfriend by Avril is totally pop, but sk8r boi is totally punk rock. I think Nas is okay nothing GREAT nothing horrible. Rap, like other music has its goods and its bads. Typhoon what now?!

Hmmm...a little off topic huh outlaw? And Naz is one of the best 'up to date rappers'. Almost as good as Eminem...
