View Full Version : Tidus' last name

I think I figured out Tidus' last name. In the beggining of the game right after you give your autographs to the fans. That narrative comes up, it doesn't sound like Tidus, but what he says is definetly describing Tidus. 3/4 of the way into the narrative he says "I say to myself Zanar. what in the world were you thinking" or something like that Is that Tidus?

TheSpoonyBard
03-22-2007, 03:04 AM
No, the narrator is Zanar. I think, judging by the last part of his speech, he's a blitzball commentator.

Nominus Experse

Zanar is a blitzball commenter, as Endless stated. He was simply reminiscing over Jecht to give the player a little bit of information concerning the tie-in there is between Tidus and Jecht.

Another cue is that Zanar's voice and Tidus' are not one and the same.

I doubt he'd be Tidus Human or Tidus Dream; the whole Ronso/Guado thing just dates back to when they were enslaved by the once-fascist humans and had to be called that so everyone could keep 'em in check.

They continue to use these surnames so as they never forget their past mistakes. Hey, it was a good enough excuse for New Yevon!

I wonder why Square never bothered to give the FFX characters surnames. All of the playable chars in VII have surnames as well as VIII's. IX's characters also have surnames yet only Garnet's (Til Alexandros XVII) was mentioned.

It's more confusing in XII. Vaan's surname (Ratsbane) is merely made up. Only Basch (fon Ronsenburg) and Ashe (Full name: Ashelia B'nargin Dalmasca) have surnames while Penelo, Fran and Balthier (Balflear in the Japanese version) have none.

Sorry if this has gotten kinda OT.

cripes. I had a surfer buddy (yeah, he lived in Minnesota and thought he was a surfer) named Tavis Johnson, we called Tidus Tavis because of the remarkable resemblence. So funny you should mention that.

Andy why would Tidus have a last name? He is such a little bish, he would just take Yuna's when they get married anyways .. :greenie:

It did grate on me when he pronounced it like that. TIDE-us makes a lot more sense, given all the watery theme and that. I have a feeling he didn't know what pronunciation to use himself, if he's anything like the VA's for Advent Children who openly admitted that had absolutely no interest in what they were doing and were just there to make a living, end of.

Tidus' name comes from the Okinawan word Tiida, meaning sun. Hence the pronounciation.

Just like Yuna's last name is Braskadaughter, right?

Actually, typically, females got the names of their mother, not the father. And those names tended to be traded away for the family name of their husband, so they are very rare these days. But we don't ever find out the name of Yuna's mother, as far as I can remember.

No one said his name because you can rename him in-game, and we don't yet have nearly good enough text-to-speech to make that work. And they certainly weren't going to have Yuna's VA record fifty thousand different names. And even if they did, some names are spelled identically, but pronounced differently, so they'd still miss tons.

That doesn't make it less funny. They should have just not let players change his name, and they should have followed local grammatical procedure when creating his name.

Why the hell do you have a Pony avatar? :|

Depends on the region, but no. Matronymic last names were usually unusual in patriarchal societies (which a lot of them were). People commonly used them as backups if the father was unknown, or died before the child was born. Sometimes, a matronym would be used if a mother was of a significant standing. Like if a really rich woman married some unknown guy for whatever reason.
