Relm used to be crap to me, but she's now one of my top 6 because she's so good with magic, and she has some pretty good/unique armor.

I no longer use Umaro or Gogo, ever, but after those two, it'd be Strago. I just don't like him!

Boo Cyan? I laugh in your direction. I beat Kaiser Dragon, and Cyan was the only person to do anything the entire battle, which was funny. He casted Quick, Quadra Slice/Tempest twice, Quick again. The funny part was, while he was in Quick, I had my other three ready with Quick, yet he kept acting before them after his Quick had expired.

I don't like giving him my Genji equipment, since it's the only halfway decent armor he can equip; That goes to Setzer. And his Bushido techs take too long to charge for my liking so he doesn't get much use on my end. =P

How can you say that? I love Cyan... I don't like Edgar that much but he is ok. I'd say that Gau is my least favorite, even though he can be very useful at times. I'm still going through this game for the first time because I just recently purchaced it. But, overall, this game's characters might be the best out of all of the Final Fantasy games. I don't want to say it's characters are better than Final Fantasy VII's. :eek:

The only one I'm not especially thrilled with is gogo. He can do anything the other characters can do, but he does it all much weaker.

Otherwise I like them all, no matter how much everyone else hates them.

I never saw how anyone could complain about Relm. She's the strongest magic user in the game. She was my best character in my last playthrough, and even made the dragon's den easy. Strongest magic user in the game+gembox+economizer+quick+ultima. I didn't fear God.

Umaro is awesome. He makes the magic tower much easier. Who the hell cares if you can't control him when he hits for about 3000-4000 damage each turn and absorbs the most common types of magic? It's not like the lack of control makes him do stupid crap like cast life1 on himself, like other characters when you use them in the colosseum.

Gau is only bad if you're too lazy to find out what rages are most effective against which enemies. I'll admit i'm in that crowd, but I know better than to complain about him. And even I've discovered the usefulness of magic urn, Sr. Behemoth, stray cat, etc.

I was never a fan of mog because dance sucks, but I'd take him anyway because of the moogle charm. I then found out when I fought the undead dragon (can't recall the name. Skull dragon?) in kefka's tower that mog+holy lance+dragon boots=9999 damage against that thing. Turns out mog is pretty good after all. But moogle charm makes up for any amount of suckage mog would bring, regardless.

Setzer+fixed dice+offering=lots of dead enemies. Plus it's just cool to watch him spinning around and whipping dice and darts all over the place. Can't help imagining him bankrupting a casino in several minutes.

And how the heck could anyone hate Cyan, watching him with offering+gengi gloves going to town on a group of enemies, with about every 3rd hit dicing an enemy to pieces?

In short, there's no bad character. The only lackluster one is gogo. I always have a hard time deciding who else to leave back.

I use to think that, until later in the game. Edgar crossbow can hit all enemies for 9999, and you just select it. And Cyan level 1 swd tech will hit for 9999 against a single enemy as well. Sabin is great at low levels, but the higher your characters get, the less special he becomes. Of course, I still use him, just saying.

Anything Terra can do, depending on how you level, Relm can often do better.

I agree that Setzer has cool animations and a neat look, but he is my least favorite character to use. Other than a few certain combinations of skills and weapons, he doesn't rate too high in comparison with other characters with cooler skills then the very chancy slot.


I like Gau a whole lot. I can be arsed to wander the veldt because I just think Gau is so cool. He gets that awesome armor, and if you know your monster skills, he can slaughter just about anybody better than most characters can with normal magic.


I also think Cyan is totally awesome. His only, and tremendous, flaw is that he''s slow as all heck, but if he's paired up with the right crew, he's just as good as anybody else, and his skills and armor do make him formidable, although slightly overshadowed by Sabin.
Also, if you use espers to increase his speed later in the game, you'll see the miraculous change as everything that once made him seem less impressive melts away into the sudden realization that Cyan can probably become your strongest fighter overall.



My least favorite character is Mog. I can't be arsed to hunt around for the stupid dances, the strongest of which, as far as I can tell, can hardly be discovered or thought of without walkthrough assistance. His equips aren't that great. His skill is mediocre at absolute best, and largely ineffective, and I think his street-savvy character is retarded.

I haven't used relm of strago enough. I ought to. Besides that, I'm not in the habit of using Gau. Too random... and often suckitudinous.

Well, I use an emulator with a speed-up button, so I hate slowing down battles just to get Sabin's Blitz right.

I was doing the dragon den... and I had my party set up with my really good party, a decent party, then a mog party
team 1:
Locke, Edgar, Sabin, Cyan
team 2:
Terra, Celes, Setzer, Relm
team 3:
Mog, Strago, Gau, Shadow(as Kappa)

turns out my Mog team killed 6 of the 8 regular dragons... but solely because of shadow as Kappa. Strago and Gau died easily, mog survived a little longer, but Shadow survived everything. I love having a Kappa, and Shadow is definitely the best for it. But anyways, battle wise my preference would be from #1 to last

Cyan(Swd Tech is awesome, especially after learning Quick)
Sabin(Blitz is great, can heal, attack everyone and hits hard even at low levels)
Locke(4x Mug)
Edgar(auto-crossbow on all, or drill/chainsaw)
Shadow(as Kappa)(multi-jump for 9999x2 or 3)
Relm(for magic and sketch is occasionally useful)
Celes(for balance, and runic can be a savior, ie enemies you're about to kill that you know cast a spell when they die)
Setzer(Slot can be good, but typically I end up with so much money... GP toss)
Mog(Dance is fun. Earth Blues my fav has hard hitting skills and good healing)
Terra(Trance/Morph is useless in the end, as at higher levels she's strong enough to do 9999 anyways)
Gau (pain to go to the veldt and train, then you can't control him in battle, plus he has no regular attack option!)
Strago (more of a pain to learn lores, and magic can do all of it just as easy)
Gogo(can do anything, but no stat boosts and half as powerful)
Umaro(Can't control, and really does nothing special)

I don't like him because I really don't want to spend forever trying to find the Rage I want on the Veldt, nor do I care for a character I can't control. I haven't played the GBA version, but by the end you have so much godly equipment and skills that characters that are not Gau get the job done fine without all of the hassle of Veldt hunting.

Its a three-way tie...Celes, cuz her stats and abilities are useless to me; Shadow, same reason unless I buy lots of scrolls; and Gau, because I am way too lazy to make him any good in the Veldt and I never would know what to choose when anyways...

Celes's stats don't suck THAT much and runic is way useful.
I don't really count it when characters use things like the gem box, offering, and quick to not suck since they can make anyone not suck. Even old man Cid could kill Kefka with that stuff.

When you say least favorite you should specify if it's dislike of the character, dislike of USING the character, or both.
I for one, am not crazy about Sabin but he gets the job done so I use him a lot.

This is one of those games where I really don't dislike anybody. I always hate the whole "make a team of four!" thing because it means I have to leave behind so many awesome characters that I wish I could use. I like basically all the characters' personalities and I think they're all quite useful... some are a bit more useful than others, but I don't think any of them downright suck.

If you really had to press to pick someone I didn't like it would probably be Strago because his character wasn't as appealing to me as most of the others'. Also I basically never used him. XD I really never used Relm either but I thought she was cute.

Relm has the highest natural magic stat in the game. She is actually a very useful character, and her magic damage is second to none with the right equipment.

About the same here. I used to not like Gau, but then I realized he simply has the most potential in the game, as far as balance goes. His rages are incredibly useful (retainer anyone) and his antics are just light hearted and fun.

I love Locke's character, but as a fighting sprite, I just don't feel he is up to snuff. though, I have to say I do not like Umaro - though , Having him do his thing, Gau Rage, mog dance you get some interesting battles.

The only use I had for Sketch was for teaching Strago Lores, that's it. I honestly only used Morph like 2-3 times throughout the game anyway. The only skills that I used regularly were Blitz, Mime, and Tools.

But mainly because his throw skill is amazingly mediocre and all the effects can be better achieved via spells or espers. Also I missed him the first time I played the game and my brother still makes fun of me for it.

I cant see why anyone would hate Cyan though. Theres a glitch you can use with him for GBA version that will make him atack till every enemy is dead. Just kill him, revive him, use retort and then put imp on him. When an enemy atacks ANYONE he will counter and keep hitting till the enemy or enemies are dead.

Definately Gau. It's not because I'm lazy either - I made Strago a really sick blue mage. I just can't let some dirty uncivilized kid mess things up with his randomness. I'll probably give him a shot on my next playthrough though.

Cyan's one of my favorites, with Gauntlets and his scimitar (i think) and pumping his STR stat, he was one of my top guys. Same with Relm, her magic is just unbelievable. Shadow too, good speed + good strength + throw +interceptor randomly saving the day = one of my favorite FF characters. So yeah, those 3 i've seen brought up here alot but they're 3 of my favorites.

Least favorite character? I'd say Mog. I hate him, I really do. He isn't a strong character in any field, and his dance ability just seems pointless. I mean, the skills he gets from the field types aren't that strong. And for some reason he almost never hits anything when I tell him to "Fight". I don't understand how my little moogle with a spear larger than him can't hit a giant worm that doesn't move. If I get too mad at him I just have my boy Sabin cast a nice Flare spell on him to kill like that, then have my girl Relm bring him to life with a Phoenix Down because I don't feel he deserves to have me waste my MP to bring him back to life. I really shouldn't hate Mog as much as I do, but I can't help how I feel. Strago is a close second because there's no point in using Blue Magic when normal magic is better anyways.

Alright, I've seen enough Umaro bashing on this board that I'm just going to come out and say it. If you don't like Umaro, chances are I just don't care for you as a person. His damage is massive enough that who cares if it's random. And absorbing or negating most magic? Pretty awesome. Not to mention the awesomeness of having a Yeti in your party. Especially one that throws your other characters at the enemy.

Then there's the way your imagination goes crazy thinking about what Umaro and Celes do at night while Mog films.

I think the only character I've never really bothered to use is Gau. I simply can't bring myself to constantly go get monster skills to get him all kitted out. I understand he's really quite good but I'm too lazy to use him.
