View Full Version : Do we all reinforce some stereotypes?!

For me as an asian guy, I know that I dress well and I did got my hair highlighted! So, some people would assume that I'm a homosexual! Some people called me white-wash even though I still have an asian accent so it does suck to be a first-generation american!

I am guilty of this, yes.

I am white male, therefore I am better qualified and more awesome than any other person on the planet.

Stereotypes exist because there is a certain amount of truth to them. The error comes when people apply stereotypes to all people of a certain group which is a silly thing to do.

Anyway, I fit into certain stereotypes, I don't fit into others. Generally, I don't really worry about it at all. I doubt anyone can really call me stereotypical of anything though.

Me, a stereotype? I've never heard such crap in my... crikey, look at the size of that croc! I reckon I better go wrestle with him then put him back in his natural habitat. Throw a shrimp on the barby for me to have when I get back.

I don't think I enforce many stereotypes myself. I don't dress in a way that would easily put a label on me. If someone got to know me just a bit though, they would probably label me as a nerd unless they had similar interests themselves.

I now and then stereotype skaters and hip-hop culture myself, and I don't really care if I do :p. I also sometimes stereotype some religious groups.

I saw a guy that is one quarter Jewish buy a bagle the other day.

I try not to stereotype. It's bad for the environment.

Canadians do say "eh?". We do eat moose. We do know everyone else in Canada. We are immune to frostbite. We are the friendliest people...ever. Forget anything else you've heard.

Stereotypes are always based on something, or they wouldn't have been thought up in the first place; so yes, I do exhibit stereotypical traits.

I always try not to. The only time I enforce a stereotype is when it just happens to be something I like doing that fits in.

I've been told I act like a 40 year old by my folks and some people I work with. Since I'm only 19 I'm going to hazzard a guess that I don't exactly fit into what one would expect the stereotype for a white british male student would be :p

Hmm... some people think Scots are violent drunkards, who live in caves and all that.
I'm not particularly violent, nor do I drink much alcohol. And I live in a house.

I DO say, "Aye" however. ;)

Haha, Shauna. xD

Um.... do I fall into a stereotype? I really can't think of any. I'm a first generation Italian American New Yorker who loves pasta and zeppoles and pronounces coffee dog like cawfee dawg?

Im from Merseyside, so Im already discriminated against, as Merseyside is the likes of Manchester and Liverpool. :p

Im British, so I pronounce scones as "Scowns" and say "Jolly ho!" all the time.

Nonsense! You live on farms and throw large logs great distances for fun. And then you moon people on the battlefield!

I'm Chinese. I know karate, not kung fu. I suck at calculus. I play video games. I wear glasses. I work with computers. I dance like a lunatic. I drive a Honda.

I'm also socialised like an american/canadian, as far as I can tell.

I also like hobbitsex. omfgaslwtfsarstdhobbitsex??

If you can apply any stereotypes to PEEGEE that actually works, I'd be very suprised.

I can fall in and out of stereotypes. It generally depends on my mood and whether or not I'm wearing the cute low-cut maid uniform at the moment.

I'm multiracial. According to the government, my ethnicity doesn't, technically, exist (although they're finally realizing that we're around. Slowly) so I don't have any stereotypes you can slap on me.

Moose meat rocks. Though I would have to correct you in saying that Maritimers are the friendliest bunch of people you'll meet.

Also, more or less what Miriel said.

Ah, right. It doesn't get much more friendly than us Maritimers. Look, you have TSoL and I as examples.

I'm a young black kid in London. Automatically you might be thought as a boy who would be starting conflict all the time and cause chaos and havoc everywhere you go. I might do it on this Forum...But i don't do it Offline.

Personally i would say that I'm quite the opposite, of the stereotype of young black males in Britain. But there is some truth to it at times; I've seen many of my friends fall under peer pressure and submit to being bad students. Many of my friends have potential and are relevantly articulate in some ways. For example rapping doesn't have to have rude or degrading lyrics in it. When ever i want to write lyrics I try to make it meaningful, and try to make it have more advanced grammar; also make it appeal to other groups of people in society.

I don't understand stereotypes. I think they are dumb. I hate it when people judge others because of what they wear or their skin color. Yesterday I got called a devil worshipper, probably because of what I was wearing. I had on a black strappy skirt, my Yuna boots, a black tank top and my jinglies (armwarmers that jingle cus they have metal rings on them). I wear a lot of black, but I usually don't wear ALL black so I looked pretty goth yesterday.

And today at lunch, I was sitting with this guy who started making racist comments. It wasn't the first time either. We heard someone sneezing in the lunch line and as a joke, I said, "Gross, is someone sneezing all over the food?" and I forgot what was said after that but after he saw who was sneezing he said, "Well she's black, what do you expect?" I thought that was very ignorant and disrespectful.

I just don't get stereotypes.

I can be the sarcastic, realistic clever girl, the crazy one, the artistic one, the nerdy one, the one who is half Italian, or that British girl. It all depends on who I'm with. :p

Dunno what I'm like on here. Cookie giver outer?

Heck yes I reinforce my stereotype. I'm proud of my geekhood (since that's the stereotype I am!) I mean come on. I wear a Firefox shirt, collect Pokemon cards, have a Periodic Table of Elements in my wallet, refuse to ever leave the house unless I absolutely have to and I exclusively run Linux on my many computers.

I am the geek stereotype.

I guess I portray kinda...emo/skater/punk stereotype.
And I know I see them, and sometimes make fun of them, but I just can't think of any at the moment.

Now if you'll excuse me, there is a hole in my igloo that needs tending, and my pet polar bear is hungry, so i'm gonna go feed him some cod, eh? < /canadian>

Just remember.

Labels are things you put on jars, NOT on people.

I try not to stereotype or discriminate. In school I'm categorized as one of the weird kids.

Friendly as in...bisexual? Oh god no, that was bad of me. x.x

I obviously stereotype, I mean, mostly everyone does at one point or another. I like stereotypes if they're used for humor purposes, just as long as we know that it doesn't apply to the whole group.

Hmm..I can't say that a particular stereotype is latched onto me. I dress kind of classy which wouldn't really make people point and call me nerdy. Although I'm very nerdy, probably the nerdiest person I know. Well...not quite.
