I am having a lot of trouble beating Judge Bergan and his minions in Mt. Bur-Ormisace (sp?). Can anybody offer any pointers on taking him down? Does he have any weaknesses? What weapons/magicks should I be using?

What weapons/magicks should I be using? I think you should level up like five levels and get more Augments in license board like HP+400 and many magic lores

Just give him a mist knack/quickenings. Make sure that your main guy goes straight for Bergan, and the others can mess up the rooks.

I summoned adremmelech and sat back and watched him kill him.

Well, you could just level up more and get more augments like someone mentioned above. I mean, the storyline bosses are really easy when you level up a bit.

That's what I had been doing...

I just realized the full potential of Quickenings, and I finally figured out how to get him. Success!

Start by casting Thundara on all Bergan's cronies with all three of your characters to easily take care of them and get them out of the way, then it should be somewhat simple.

-Equip one character with a Shield + Gauntlets and activate as many Shield Block augments with that character as you can. Give this character the best defensive equipment you can and ensure that he/she constantly has Protect. I recommend the augments that give you MP as you deal/take damage and the Curaga spell to heal. This is your Paladin.

-Set a gambit for another character to use the Arcane spell "Decoy" on the Paladin, give this character the strongest weapon you can and activate some Channeling augments along with the augment that gains MP as you deal damage. Set Gambits for this character to attack the leaders target, but, Decoying the Paladin must take priority. This is your Damage dealer/Decoy caster.

-Equip your final character with Flame/Ice/Thunder staff (I forget the actual name of each staff but you know what I mean) and get that character to cast the corresponding -a tier spell on the leaders target (Note: Fira worked well for me). The Warmage/Magic potency/Channeling augments are very useful here (I had most of them). This is your Black Mage.

Now beat off the minor judges first, your Black Mage will take care of them very promtly while they all beat helplessly against your Paladin's armour. Use Curaga with the Paladin when needed, since the Paladin is getting hit and hitting lots he/she will have plently of MP to do this with providing you have the right augments.

After you get him down to low HP - like all bosses of FFXI - he will go a little crazy, just stricten (Yeah I made that word up) up on the Cures and keep HPs high. If your party dies, press triangle unequip everything and transfer it onto your other three characters and use exactly the same strategy, although if you do it well, Bergan won't reach these three.

I beat him quite easily, actually. But then again, everyone was over 40 at the time.

Canīt remember which level I was on but for me one Inferno was enough to kill him instantly.

Here's some other suggestions:

Make sure you buy Shielded Armor which is sold by the merchant right when you enter the mountain, and use it because it gives you auto Protect, and you need Protect on always since he can hit hard.

If you have a Shell Shield, equip on someone because it gives auto Shell. Have Shell on your other two allies. The boss uses some elemental attacks, and Shell will reduce the damage from those. Give rest of them the best shields possible, and give everyone either a sword or axe/hammer.

Alternatively, you can give your leader a ranged weapon and let him do the healing. You can let him stay as far away as possible from the boss. You can also set one of your melee tanks to give Hi-Potions along.

And most of all, get rid of the other soldiers first using any available AoE attacks you have. Your magic user will be most suitable for this.

As ScottNUMBERS suggested, Gauntlet accessories are very helpful because evasion is very important, esp. when he comboes towards the end. You will likely block more attacks that you would otherwise take damage from.
