Ok i have a math problem for y'all...and i want to see work as well!

Which point on the curve y=1+(3-X)^(1/2) is closest to the point (-2,1)? What is the distance?

Go for it!!!

Hints: Use the distance formula.
^(1/2) means the square root.

Git! Ya just had to stick a square root in there, didn't ya! :mad2: :D

EDIT: Weird-looking curve by the way...

EDIT 2: What kind of curve is that?!

If Bert says so... but you still need the problem all resolved in your notebook, no?

I'm not going to do it but if bert say it's three then it must be right because BERT said so.

I can do this. It's easy. -2 is in the X place and 1 in the Y. So plug them into the equation. 1=1+(3-[-2]) ^(1/2). Then, do the parenthesis. (3-[-2])=5. So, the equation is now 1=1+5^(1/2). Now for the square root. the square root of 5 is 25. So, that would now be 1=1+25 and this wouldn't be right. Dammit, come one think Typhoon....:irked:

HAHA!!!!!!!! Now I remember how to do it!!!! Your not suppose to plug both numbers in at once. Here it is. First, we plug in -2 in X place to find Y. The equation is now Y=1+(3-[-2])^(1/2). First the parenthesis. (3-[-2])=5. So, the Equation is now Y=1+5^(1/2). Now for the Square root. Square root of 5 is 25. So, the equation is now Y=1+25. Which means Y=26. Now to find for X, we'll replace 1 with Y to find X. 1=1+(3-X)^(1/2). First the parenthesis, (3-X)=-3X. The equation is now 1=1+(-3X)^(1/2). Now then, we'll subtract 1 from both side crossing out the 1 on the left side of the equal sign. the equation is now 0=-3X^(1/2). Now we'll need to eliminate that square root. So, we'll put a square root on both side of the equal sign crossing out the square root on left side of the equal sign. As for the right side of the equal sign, the square root of 0 is 0. So, the equation is now 0= -3X. Now then, we'll need to eliminate the -3 from the X. So, we'll add 3 to both sides of the equal sign crossing out the -3 on left side of the equal sign and adding 3 to 0 on the right side of the equal sign. The answer would be 3=X. The overall answer is (3, 26). But I can be wrong...:rolleyes2

I never said it was a riddle!!!!

Oh and Typhoon....the square root of 5 is not 25

Oh its not for help, I know the answer, just thought some people would like a challenge.

ok I THINK the point is (-2,root6)
and the distance is either root6-1 or something less than that
tell me if im right before i give a bunch or working\

or wait
never mind

ok ok this time
the point is (-2 , 1+root5)
the distance is root5 or something slightly less
I THINK

This is like setting up a resturant but you sell undergarments instead of food and beverages.

Ive just been doing these in lessons, but not together. Ive done 1/2 square roots, and graphs like those, but not together ;o
