RPGFan News - Dragon Quest IX No Action RPG After All (http://www.rpgfan.com/news/2007/1141.html)

Square Enix's Level 5-developed Dragon Quest IX: Hoshizora no mamori Hito won't be an action RPG after all. During the game's official announcement in December 2006, series mastermind Yuuji Horii had stated his intention to steer the series into a new direction, by turning the newest installment into a DS-based action RPG. According to a recent JUMP article however, the changes won't be as radical as previously declared. In fact, the good old command-based system will return in Dragon Quest IX. Similarly, the cooperative online mode will also feature a battle system with traditional command input.
Dragon Quest IX: Hoshizora no mamori Hito will be available in Japan sometime later this year.

Well this is good news for fans of the series, I guess. Dragon Quest's charm comes from the fact that it's such a traditional style RPG.

I'm still just psyched about the fact that they're developing the latest installment of the core series on a handheld, but I guess I was looking forward to the new direction quite a bit, so this is a bit disappointing to me.

Looks (visually) just like 'Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker', which already looked pretty similar to DQ8. Cel shading on the DS seems to be the way to go for the best visuals

Well, I'm still excited for more Dragon Quest. And I'm kinda relieved that they're still going to use the same tried and true relaxing 'old-school' style of RPG that they've always used (although I would not be adverse to an action-RPG style of combat). The fact that it looks gorgeous and is handheld makes me anticipate it all the more.
