I always got the impression that Wedge, Biggs and Jessie focused on blowing up reactors and defeating the bad Shinra guys.
Did they even know about Sephiroth and anything that involved the later events?

i think that almost the whole world knew about sephiroth;) But at the start of the game he was not any kind of threat. Only when he was at shinra headquarters(as jenova) did he become a problem but by then biggs wedge and jessie were dead:cry:

They had probably heard of him, since he was a renowned and inportant member of Soldier. But you have to remember he had been missing for years at that point, there was no proof he was still alive either, so they probably didn't even think he would be involved.

After that, Aerith told all three of them what Avalanche was fighting for now. It wasn't just Shinra Inc. anymore but also with the much more dangerous existence known as Sephiroth... They had left Midgar to stop his evil ambitions of making the Planet his.

yep. basically their motivations are limited because that's how the story begins, gradually opening up. and they die before that happens.

In the novella The Maiden Who Travels The Planet (an official publication, by the way, so it's a canonical part of the story), Aerith's spirit encounters Biggs, Wedge and Jessie in the Lifestream. They've almost completely returned to the planet when she meets them though - they've nearly finished rejoining the Lifestream, so their conscious spirits are nearly gone by the time she meets them. But talking to her brings them back together, for a brief time, and she explains the situation to them, and they finally help to defeat Meteor by lending their strength to the collective will of the Lifestream.

So, to cut it short - they did know about Sephiroth's attempt to destroy the world, and they did their part to help out. But it was after their deaths, and it was the last thing any of them did either, as the effort (and the sense of closure it provided) meant that they faded away into the Lifestream shortly afterward.
