Unequiping characters

I am playing FFiv on PS2 and cannot figure out how to unequip a character before I lose them in them story line. Help please.:rolleyes2

You should be able to just unequip the items by selecting a blank space in your inventory when you want to equip a new weapon. Of course, you have to do this before the event where a character will be removed from your party.
