Which RPG genre, do you prefer Japanese RPGs or Western RPGs? I prefer Japanese RPGs because JRPGs are always released on consoles, you hardly ever see a Western RPG on a console and if you do it's exclusive to the X-Box.

I like good RPG's.

I generally prefer Japanese RPG's but this question puts me in the position to say I dislike one of the two, which I dont.

Western RPGs because they're actually RPGs, unlike those japanese things. JRPGs interest me more though.

I’m a racist swine, so it’s Western RPGs for me.

Pretty much what Dreddz said, only substitute "Japanese" for "Western".

That above meh.

I'm glad that we got the correct terminology in this thread... *remembers the old "US-RPG vs. J-RPG" topic*:D

I think they both have good games. But Japan has Grandia, Skies of Arcadia, and of course Final Fantasy.

I play more Japanese RPGs, but western ones can also be good.

I enjoy both but for different reasons. JRPGs of late have been losing my interest as they are getting a bit too cliche and formulaic, and I really seem to prefer the branching paths of many Western RPGs. There are some great JRPGs though, so it really just depends on the game.

I want a game with the storytelling of the westerners with the gameplay mechanics of the Japanese.

whats the difference?

whats the difference?

cRPGs (Console, i.e. Japanese) are like Final Fantasy. You follow a strict storyline and don't actually RP much at all, you just progress through the story as it was set out by the developers.

CRPGs (Computer, i.e. Western) are like Baldur's Gate. You have far, far more freedom in what you do, when you do it, blah blah.

You forgot the part where Westerns get Horribly Boring.

So, Japanese RPG's don't get boring?

Not nearly as often or as fast.

I think you mean it the other way around.

I need say one thing, just one thing, to detractors of CRPGs. Fallout.

One game hardly makes up for the atrocities of KotR and Morrowind.

However I haven't actually played Fallout yet.

but I still like them both pretty much the same.

Uh, yeah, it's hard to make up for things which never happened.

And you want to know how good Fallout is? It's so good that, if the Nazis had made the game, it would have made up for the Holocaust.

I must try this game sometime. It sounds... Intriguing.

Put it this way: If you play the game the right way, you can essentially talk the last boss out of it.

Impossible decision. I like aspects of Western RPGs, like free-roaming dungeons, non-linear stories, etc. But I also like linear stories and crazy characters, and the battle systems that usually come along with JRPGs.

Dragon Mage

A good question, to be sure.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Well, Japanese RPG's do include Final Fantasy. Point for them.

But Western has Dungeons & Dragons. Many points for them.

Japanese have engaging stories.

Western has D&D.

and so on, and so on.....

I can't decide. I like them both. However, I do think that Western RPG's do allow more role-playing. You can make decisions and have those decisions not loop on you until you pick the right answer.

this debate usually comes down to whether people prefer linear storylines or open-ended gameplay, but in my case, I think JRPGs are just flat out better.

Same here. I jyst can't feel the Western RPGs. It's sort of weird, 'cause I realy want to get in the game but I can't. Dunno why that is.

What I like better in jRPGs:
- the storyline,
- the music,
- the monsters which usually look like a hybrid between a washing machine and a hippo.

Several Western RPGs have fairly spectacular stories, especially since many JRPGs are rather formulaic. There are the really good ones on both ends of the spectrum, but if you go through the norm both sides have a more or less even share of the good and the bad.
