Something like Untitled 1 by Sigur Ros or Casimir Pulaski Day by Sufjan Stevens fit the bill well. Both are fantastic songs anyway.

If you're looking for songs to cheer you up, then anything by The Go! Team pretty much. Or Nice Weather for Ducks by Lemon Jelly

This is a Dream of Win and Regine - Owen Pallett/Final Fantasy
Empty Streets - Late Night Alumni
Misery is a Butterfly, Heroine, My Impure Hair, For the Damaged, Equally Damaged, For the Damaged Coda, Magic Mountain - Blonde Redhead

I highly recommend Blonde Redhead; not all of their songs are slow and depressing like the ones above.

Can't believe I'm the first person to mention Radiohead. Here goes...

How to Disappear Completely - Radiohead
Street Spirit (Fade Out) - Radiohead
Exit Music (For a Film) - Radiohead
We Suck Young Blood - Radiohead
You and Whose Army - Radiohead
Talk Show Host - Radiohead
Fake Plastic Trees - Radiohead

Here we are - Breaking Benjamin
Unknown Soldier - Breaking Benjamin
Breath - Breaking Benjamin
Weight of the World - Saliva
Killswitch Engage - Arms of Sorrow

But I sometimes prefer to songs that'll psyche me up when im depressed, its like saying 'Yea, this world sucks, but I aint gonna give in to it'. In which case it would be:

3 6 Mafia - Its a fight
Eminem - Til I Collapse
Eminem - Lose Yourself
Tupac - I'm Alive
DJ Green Lantern - Fight Song

Mythra

Pick me up's are good, but not those happy go lucky ones, too happy if ya know what I mean. I'm basically looking for ones about depression or being sad but as some have already said, won't let it get to them, to rise above it so to speak.

So a Dark Hope kinda song? hrm, I would say Flyleaf mya kind serve such a purpose, Linkin Park's "What I have done" kinda speaks in the terms of regret and rising above.

Agreed. Especially the Sigur Ros suggestion, that song is beautiful.

Also, Horses In The Sky by A Silver Mount Zion. The whole album is about how fucked up the world is, but that there is still hope for the future. Oh, and "13 Angels Standing Guard 'Round the Side of Your Bed" by the same band is one of the most moving pieces of music I've heard.

Hurt - Jhonny Cash or Hurt - NIN

Whatever version fits you better, but I think Jhonny Cash's version is the perfect song for this situations... specially if you can see the video

Radiohead, Mono, A Silver Mount Zion, Wilco, Ryan Adams, and Smashing Pumpkins all occasionally dip into the genre/situation you speak of.

Maybe Tomorrow by the Stereophonics would fit perfectly then.

Smashing Pumpkins is great for this kind of thing, I think. Perfect always gets me so, so depressed. I don't know what it is about that song. Maybe cause I find it so bittersweet, and I hate bittersweet!

Good song though. :D

Whenever I hear someone ask this question I always recommend the opening chorus to J.S. Bachs Saint John Passion. I have yet to hear any music despair like this music does.

You're also in luck, because I have it handy.

Putfile - St John Passion (http://media.putfile.com/St-John-Passion)

Edit: For those of you who choose to click on this link and decide you don't like it, I beg of you this: Please listen for at least three minutes. The choir doesn't enter until about a minute and a half in and you don't get a good impression of the music without hearing the chorus.

"Something in the Way" by Nirvana (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzUD4jGDmKk) is one of the saddest songs I've ever heard.

Here's producer Butch Vig talking about how sad the song is. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEv1ifxfKlg)

Other sad songs:
"Death to Birth" by Pagoda (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l78RDT-p24I)
"Mad World" by Gary Jules (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4N3N1MlvVc4)
"Polly" by Nirvana (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jmj7Z-ZElFg)
"Baby I'm gonna Leave you" by Led Zeppelin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqGwtONAT-s&mode=related&search=)
"Since I've been loving you" by Led Zeppelin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89yw7wqoaio)
