Same as a guild in other online RPGs. It's just a social grouping where you talk about random stuff and occasionally organize things to do.

To be more specific, a linkshell is something equipped (most people will have link pearls or sacs) that will let you chat with other people on the server who have a linkpearl/sac equipped from the same link shell.
To make a linkshell, one would have to buy a New Linkshell item for 8k (I think) and then use it to create a linkshell item. once that linkshell is equipped, you can me an infinite amount of link pearls from the linkshell menu, these can be traded to other people and thereby allowing them to join your Linkshell group/community (aka LS). You can then upgrade some people's link pearls to pearl sacs, which gives them some administrative privileges (Allows them to make link pears(therefore lets them invite people into the LS), lets them kick people from the linkshell who have a linkpearl, and lets them set an LS message (done with command /lsmes message here) )
*Only the person with the linkshell (LS leader) can upgrade people from linkpearl to pearlsac and vice versa.
*Only the person with the linkshell (LS leader) can kick people with pearlsacs.
*Pearlsacs and Linkshells are Exclusive, and therefore cannot be traded

That depends on what kind of linkshell you're joining.
There's linkshells that are merely social. A place for friends to talk and have fun. Maybe they'll organize some things on the fly, but there's not any real rigid structure.
Then there's endgame shells (or those similar to it) made specifically for all endgame activities such as dynamis. Those tend to get more drama than any other kind and are extremely demanding of its members.
That's a simplified description anyway.

With a bit of luck, you'll get invites to linkshells after a while when you start playing, I usually do. If not, after you get to know someone you think is all right, you could ask if you could join his or her LS.

To be a lil more specific, endgame LSs tend to do a specific activity and maybe other related ones too. Most require you to be ontime and do that activity only, with stricter rules, and a certain level / requirement to join. Most of these activities involve a huge ammount of people and therefore most social LSs do not attempt these on a regular basis.

I had over a year of actual playtime when I quit and I'd done a lot of things, but nowhere near everything. If you really wanted to do everything it would take quite a bit longer I would suspect.

I think it's meant that 365 days of HARDCORE playing can see everything. No chatting with friends, no hanging out, no helping people, just straight up levelling and missions/quests.
