View Full Version : 1st EoFF Summer D&D Game

Azure Chrysanthemum
06-01-2007, 05:08 AM
Summer is coming and I'm almost done being murdered by my finals (note to Grand Tourney followers: that's why there's been no update. I'll get one up when I have time). Thus, I think it's the perfect time to start talking about an idea that's been bandied around but has never come to fruition: an EoFF D&D game. I'm keeping this out of the roleplaying forum and treating this like the EoFF Diablo II coalition, as this thread is merely a place for people to meet up and talk about it, instead of actually playing the game in this thread.

So, I'll go over the basics of what I'm planning.

This game will be conducted at least once a week with a varying schedule on either AOL or MSN messenger, which will be decided upon by group consensus. Those unwilling to use the messenger picked will not be able to play. It's possible to use a private room of the #eoff chatroom if necessary, that can also be discussed. The day is liable to fluctuate, I will more than likely be working a job that has no set hours during the summer and won't have any set time I can game.

The game will use the standard Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 system, much of which can be found here. (http://www.d20srd.org/index.htm) I'm willing to accept beginners on a case-by-case basis, I prefer those with at least some familiarity with the rules and the ability to create their own character without help. I am, of course, available to help newer players who pass initial muster (more on that later).

The story will be fairly basic at first, though more complexity may enter the equation as the game goes on. The premise is much like that found in the mid-game of Radiata Stories, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radiata_Stories) your characters are members of a fledgling but moderately powerful mercenary organization within a large city and will accept various jobs for money. As you increase in level and renown, harder jobs will find their way to your desks.

Unique about this game is that everyone will create at least 3 characters (there is no upward limit to the amount of characters you may make). Each session will be a different job, and each player can select a type of character they feel is most suited to the task at hand (some jobs may run through several sessions, and the same character will be played throughout). This allows players to, if desired, make a standard balanced D&D party or to tailor a party to a given task, such as a party of rogue-type characters for a sneaking-based mission.

After each adventure, inactive characters will receive an amount of treasure and experience to account for other adventures that they were doing while the main group was adventuring. The exact percentage of this will be decided upon more when the game is starting.

We will be using two sites for this game, RPG Web Profiler (http://www.rpgwebprofiler.net/) for character sheets (remember to use the 3.5 format when creating a character sheet and to make it public so we can all read it) and Invisible Castle (http://invisiblecastle.com/) for dice rolling, which I will likely do myself. It's entirely possible I'll end up breaking out my own dice and making the rolls in-game for everyone.

My preference is 6 players, though I'm willing to go higher, especially depending on how scheduling pans out. We'll see with how many people apply. I will accept no player until they have 3 characters for me to look over.

I have access to many of the D&D books in PDF form at the very least. All characters will start at level 5 with 19,000 gp worth of equipment (you may not spend more than 9,500 gold on a single item). The following books are available for character creation:

Player's Handbook
Dungeon Master's Guide
Monster Manual I
Expanded Psionics Handbook
Player's Handbook
Tome of Battle: Book of the Nine Swords

Most of the content in the following books I will allow to be used, but double-check with me to be sure I'm allowing it, especially in the case of Complete Divine (Divine Metamagic=no). All of the base classes presented in the complete books are already pre-approved, go ahead and use them.
Complete Warrior
Complete Arcane
Complete Adventurer
Complete Divine
Heroes of Battle
Heroes of Horror
Libris Mortis
The Draconomicon
Eberron Campaign Setting

Any other desired books may be made available on request if I can be provided with some kind of copy of the pertinent information, as I do not have access to them.

Also, if for some reason you MUST use the Samurai class, I will be using a variant of the 3.0 Oriental Adventures samurai, a.k.a. the Samurai class that doesn't suck. Also, anyone wishing to make use of a combat-oriented class may use a Tome of Battle variant that grants them maneuver and stance progressions in exchange for lessened abilities.

Ability scores will be determined by 38 point-buy (giving a basic array of 18, 16, 14, 12, 10 and 8 if desired), and hit points will be maximum at first level and 1/2+1 every level thereafter (d4=3, d6=4, d8=5, d10=6, 12=7).

Available races can have no more than a combined Racial HD and level adjustment of +4. I'm willing to allow any race in the above books (Monster Manual being the easiest to draw from) and will look over any proposed race from a book not on the list. Assume a Greyhawk setting, so anything published is theoretically fair game.

I will require some kind of backstory. I don't have a huge world right now, just know that there is an "Asian" part of the world (for the Oriental Adventures-flavored classes like Ninja, Samurai and Shugenja) and the story takes place in the "European" world. The guild is based out of the Lordcity Sylvaris. More details on guild protocols will be reached later, but at the moment I'm looking at a Chaotic Neutral-type guild that will do most things for the right price. Paladin characters are tentatively accepted if there's a good enough reason for them to be in the mercenary guild, but if the guild turns out to be too chaotic or evil, I may have to disallow Paladins. Again, this will be decided when we have confirmed players.

I can give appropriate cities for backstories on requests, and I do require a decent backstory as to why you became an adventurer and joined the mercenary guild. Bear in mind, mercenary guilds aren't good places to fulfill the "a mysterious stranger murdered my family and now I seek revenge" or other such JRPG cliche standards, and characters created in that vein likely will get them and possibly you denied for this game. Your characters are not unique butterflies with special powerz and great destinies. Forge your greatness for yourself, don't try to make yourself a chosen one of some sort in your backstory.

Do note that this doesn't mean I'm against you all doing great things, but I will stringently enforce my anti-cliche policy.

Anyway, those interested, do post. Generate characters. Be fruitful and multiply and all that jazz. Game will likely be starting sometime after the 11th of June, and I will for sure be able to continue it until sometime around the 26th of September, possibly extending it into the school year depending on how things go.

I'm interested, but won't be able to join in until halfway through July. I have some experience with playing it in the real world, but not version 3.5. Does each of the three characters need a background story, or just one general one to cover it all?

Azure Chrysanthemum
06-01-2007, 07:28 AM
Late joining is OK, they're mercenaries so new members isn't a bad thing. Each character needs a background of some sort, but it can be interwoven if you'd like. I can provide instructions on how to play 3.5, it's not terribly difficult. Which reminds me, I need to put up the point buy numbers for ability scores. I'll do that now.

I'll Sign up. Though what about Complete Scoundrel? And I seem to be missing the ECL we will be making the characters at, so Is it assumed Level 1?

Edit: NVM, I found it.

Azure Chrysanthemum

I've heard good things about Complete Scoundrel (I'm especially fond of the Grey Guard) so if you want to use it, go ahead.

And I'm just now reminded of level-adjustment races, I will amend that now.

NeoCracker

Specificly speaking, what of Skill Tricks. I can Give you all the details if you don't know what they are. Its a brand new Game Mechanic you can use. (However, they may not be the best thing to implement if we have new players, and it highly benefits class's with High Skill points.)

Edit: Also, How about Warlocks? Still want to try one myself. And I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who likes Gray Guards.

Azure Chrysanthemum

I'm willing to use skill tricks, I've looked them over and they seem solid. Warlock is a base class in Complete Arcane and thus permitted.

NeoCracker
06-01-2007, 07:45 AM
That Takes 2 class's for me. A Grey Elf Necro, A Warlock of unknown Origin at this point.

I think I'll make a Diguise Specialist now. Always wanted to Try one of them. Perhaps I'll build to a Montbank?

Just one Question Void: The Hidden Spaces from Complete Scoundrel, will a "Tiny" Hiddens space be able to carry a Bag of Holding Type 1? It says the size of a small weapon, haven't really used this before so I thought I'd clear it up real fast.

Azure Chrysanthemum
06-01-2007, 08:10 AM
Let's see... all bags of holding are 2 by 4 feet, so they're reasonably sized. I'd have to say no.

NeoCracker
06-01-2007, 08:13 AM
Ah, never really checked the size of a Bag of Holding. Ah well, the pockets will still work nicely for something else.

Edit: Forgot to ask, what about Arms and Equipment Guide? Only thing I got from their was the Everlasting Mug though.

And here is my guy so far. Need to do Skills, feets, spells, and a bit more shopping, but mostly done.

Azure Chrysanthemum

That kind of cliche is OK, it's pretty standard for D&D. My major pet peeve is Cloud-like storylines, those piss me off.

Hero, I linked to the SRD (http://www.d20srd.org/index.htm)in my posts, that's a good tool to use for character generation, all the rules are there.

The two presented characters are more or less acceptable, although it'd be nice if Morphius' backstory was completed (it looks like it's missing a few words).

On Ardelaine, the goddess you want is Ehlonna (Mielikki is the Faerun equivalent and I'm using a straight Greyhawk setting).

Also, you don't seem to have spent much of your wealth. I'd at least get a +3 strength composite longbow, possibly enchanted, a mithral chainshirt, and maybe some other magic items.

I'll have more distinct info on the guilds and districts after I'm finished with finals. Also, I want your opinions on the following rules:

Zynshyr and Superior Weapons and Armor (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33569)

This is a material I crafted as both a balancing mechanism to give Fighters some options against full casters at high levels and a flavorful object. I would like to have it made available (both to the party and to people you may be fighting). What say you all?

Oh, and keep those characters coming. The sooner they're all in, the sooner I can start.

Hero, don't forget two things:

1. You get a stat boost every 4 levels, so that should give you a +1 to one of your ability scores.

2. You start with 19,000 gold, so you should have a lot better equipment on your characters than you do. Don't be afraid to use the magic items in the DMG or the SRD (http://www.d20srd.org/indexes/magicItems.htm) to equip your characters.

Sooo I'm interested, but my library is very small and I'll be very busy until after the 19th. Then I'll have a bit of time to work on character sketches. It might be rude to ask, but so far what type of party is running in relation towards diversity? I've only played a few types of characters, but I'm looking to broaden that. :D So far, I've played Druid, Swashbuckler, Ranger, Monk and a little tiny bit of Cleric. The Cleric was mostly RP, so I don't have much experience with casting. But I'm willing to try!

Also, I normally play female, but I'm willing to play men.

If anyone has any PDFs for me to have, shoot me a PM and we'll chat.

if it's +4 level adjustment, then you only get one class level and one hit die...not recommended...but it's not up to me.

Azure Chrysanthemum
06-14-2007, 08:43 PM
Araciel is correct.

I'm noting a lot of you are somewhat... fragile. This is going to be interesting.

I should also note that the hero shield is not on. It is entirely possible for your characters to die, but I am going to try to make the challenges appropriate to the party.

Finally, I am allowing you to buy off your LA if you want, but +4 LA is much harder to buy off than +1 or +2.

Just a few questions - what is the Greyhawk deity for druids? The only list I have is the one that pops up when you create a character on Neverwinter Nights. Also, how much does it cost to buy off a level adjustment? Finally, Can we add in more characters as the game progresses?

And, as for the fragility of my characters, I have the unfortunate tendency to use more "squishy" characters than I should.

Araciel
06-15-2007, 02:46 PM
i think he means buy off as in XP...also, the premier nature deity in greyhawk is obad-hai.

i'm just saying a lot of monsters we'll be facing (if we face monsters) or npcs will have clost to 60 hp...where as you will have around 10 if you're playing a +4LA character....and a lot of my characters can do more than 10 damage in one attack, which means the npcs/monsters won't be far behind.

Greyhawk Dieties (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_deities_of_Dungeons_%26_Dragons)

The dieties most commonly worshiped by Druids in the Greyhawk setting are Ehlonna (Neutral Good) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ehlonna), Obad-Hai (True Neutral) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obad-Hai), and Phyton (Chaotic Good) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phyton).

You can make as many characters as you want at any time. When we start playing, there will be an agreement as to what level the new characters will come in at (but it will probably be somewhere around equal level or one level below).

Buying off Level Adjustment works like this. (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/races/reducingLevelAdjustments.htm)

I have a question: If one of my characters is a Paladin and the other is a Blackguard, will my Paladin become a Fallen Paladin?

Edit/

Excuse me pls.

Character One
Genji Madara , Human Rogue (http://www.rpgwebprofiler.net/view.php?id=55251)

Character Two
Lysarg Lucavi , Human Paladin (http://www.rpgwebprofiler.net/view.php?id=55250)

I'm hoping my next character, a Blackguard will be compatible with the Paladin.

Azure Chrysanthemum
06-18-2007, 07:48 PM
Sagensyg, you don't have the base BAB and saves down for either of your characters, nor do you have your Paladin's divine grace bonus to saves.

Also, you haven't spent all 19,000 of your gold, but I do applaud the use of mithral chain shirts which is the best light armor in the game and should probably be used by just about every light armor character by this level. Though why your paladin is not in full-plate, especially with his dexterity bonus is something of a mystery to me.

I'm lighter on the Paladins associating with evil characters and immediately falling, but the fact that a Blackguard is in a guild that has not one but TWO paladins already (one of whom is an Aasimar for the extra holy) seems a bit odd, no?

Araciel
06-18-2007, 08:32 PM
a paladin will never knowingly associate with an evil being, as per the PHB so if you're going to play a blackguard, you'll need to at the very least cast undetectable alignment every day, not to mention all the bluff checks you'll have to make all the time, just a warning, unless BTV decides at this point to disallow paladins, in which case i'll just have to change the selection i made.

Azure Chrysanthemum
06-18-2007, 08:43 PM
In a guild dynamic the guildmaster will have the final say on recruitment, and depending on how the guild morality is decided he might allow evil characters in.

Note right now the group has a much stronger good bent, so evil characters are a lot less likely to be accepted (though it's not impossible for them to be accepted into the guild).

Just note, be they good or evil all characters must have the ability to work with others and not stab each other in the back to be accepted into the guild. That's just sound business.

Araciel
06-19-2007, 01:33 AM
in that case, i will make a different character, i doubt a paladin would join such a guild.

The current guild I'm going to be running will be operated by a Grey Guard (Paladin Prestige class). Grey Guards are Lawful Good but are exempt from a lot of the Paladin restrictions. In this case, the Grey Guard will hire anyone who can do the job and do it well to further the cause of good.

So, should I change my neutral evil character?

Azure Chrysanthemum
06-19-2007, 03:20 PM
You don't have to. Grey Guards of high enough level don't fall if they do something that violates the Paladin's code in order to serve the greater good. Just give your neutral evil character a good reason for working with the Grey Guard.

Basically, Grey Guard gives me a great flavor compromise. There's still the good aspect and service of the greater good, but its a much grittier methodology. Grey Guards can use a lot of means normal paladins cannot (such as torture and interrogation) if it is in service of the greater good.

I stickied this so it wouldn't get lost. :)

I have background for one character. By this weekend I'll have everything done for all three. :D

I was pointed in the direction of an interesting program today.

Open RPG (http://www.openrpg.com/)

I'm considering downloading it and taking a look, possibly using it for this game. Would anyone be violently against using such a program? Would anyone be interested in using such a program?

Araciel

i've never used it...if you want to be the pioneer who learns how to use it, i'll be good to go for sure, it seems pretty popular and useful, i just could never be bothered to learn it

Wait, does this mean this hasn't started yet? I've been disconnected and unable to make a character, so if its just starting, I'll get back to work on doing that.

My last one was deleted, so here is the remake of him and another.

Morphius the Warlock (http://www.rpgwebprofiler.net/view.php?id=55709)
Gordan, the Rogue who specializes in Disguise. (http://www.rpgwebprofiler.net/view.php?id=55710)
Helix, the Dragon Shaman (http://www.rpgwebprofiler.net/view.php?id=55715)

And now for no apparant reason, Link (http://www.rpgwebprofiler.net/view.php?id=53508),

Also Void, your first post says 9000 gold, just to let you know.

And 4 points should be missing from Gordans skills for his two skill tricks. I intend to become a Montebank Next level with him if thats alright with you.

Edit: Third Chartacter updated. If a dragon Shaman wont' fit into your world, just let me know and I'll just make a Favoured Soul.

ok Kerethian has become Khelgar.

not that he is much more tolerant of evil, but a little can sometimes go a long way.

06-23-2007, 07:30 PM
Huh. May have just shot myself in the foot on the wealth-by-level guidelines. Oh well!

Looks good, Neo, we can start with one more person having completed their characters. I have two friends coming in as well, that should help things.

Also, I got a PDF of Complete Scoundrel, so s'all good.

Almost Made a Dirgesinger and Ur-Priest. Though I think there is enough evil running around.

Azure Chrysanthemum

Dirgesingers don't have to be evil. They're just depressing and have an "emo" feel to them.

It just seemed like you could do a better story if they are evil, that way I can avoid the Emo Feel.

I realized I'm too lazy to fux with the program, so we'll just use a chat client.

So, let's take a vote from those who actually have all their characters completed.

AIM, MSN or #EoFF?

NeoCracker
06-29-2007, 05:47 AM
It's gotta be either MSN or Irc, though I think we should make a seperate channel on the server, as in #eoff there may be a lot of other people talking at the time.

Tasura
06-29-2007, 06:00 AM
I haven't made all my characters yet, but I'm halfway done so I will vote for it doesn't matter to me, I've got AIM and MSN, and I'm on IRC alot, just not #eoff.

Araciel
06-29-2007, 06:00 AM
for reals...we can just call it #DND or somesuch plus roogle knows of a die rolling script i think which would be invaluable, though i wouldn't mind if BTV just rolled for me heh

Tasura
06-29-2007, 06:05 AM
Void already posted a link for a dice rolling thing. Here (http://invisiblecastle.com/) it is again.

Also, Void, can I use a race from Races of Stone?

NeoCracker

OOH OOh, is it a Goliath?

They kick so much ass.

Azure Chrysanthemum
06-29-2007, 06:54 AM
I'm probably just rolling for all of you, it's easier.

We'd use a private channel for the D&D of course.

Chaos is using a Tome of Battle character. I'm quite excited about that, they're pretty awesome.

I wanted something to fit a Barbarian. Also, here are my characters

Izumi (http://www.rpgwebprofiler.net/view.php?id=56254)
Kalarra (http://www.rpgwebprofiler.net/view.php?id=56249)
Rovian (http://www.rpgwebprofiler.net/view.php?id=56210)

Izumi is still being worked on, she just needs her spells.

The Triumphant Hero
06-29-2007, 02:46 PM
I can only use AIM or #EoFF

Azure Chrysanthemum
06-29-2007, 06:28 PM
It looks like #EoFF is what we'll be using since some people only use AIM or only use MSN.

I work today and tomorrow, but once I get my schedule I'll start suggesting days for the first session. Newer players may join if desired, if I hit 8 or more players I will be splitting the group into two sessions and have two days available to try to work around schedules. 12 will bring it to three groups, but I don't think any more than that will be happening.

Tasura

ALL PEOPLE PLAYING IN THIS GAME READ THIS!

I have my work schedule for this week and would like to begin this game. I am on Pacific time, all times presented here will be in Pacific (West Coast United States) time.

Please add me to either AIM or hotmail if you haven't already done so. My AIM is BeholdtheVoid, and my MSN is behold_the_void@hotmail.com. Just by being able to see who all is online will make coordinating that much easier.

Today (Saturday) I work from 1-4, but there is a slim possibility that I may have to work until close (9:00). I can most likely play any time after 4:30 today, if everyone's around to play.

Tomorrow I work 12-9. Playing after that is an option.

I have Monday off, but will be out with friends likely until very late. Monday is not an option.

Tuesday I also have off but run my real life campaign and may do other things thereafter. Tuesday is not an option.

Wednesday I work to close, any time after 9.

Same deal Thursday.

Friday I have off, this is a good day for me to run a game.

Saturday I believe I work until close, again, any time after 9.

Sunday I have off for a birthday party, not a good day.

Chime in with schedules and let's get this thing started.

Tasura
06-30-2007, 08:52 PM
Tell me a time to wake up, and I'll be there, I've no job/life so I'm available pretty much always, other than today, it's a family BBQ type thing, and if it's 4:30 west coast time, then it'd be 8:30 East Coast Canada time, I may be able to play then, depending on my drunkenness and who's still here.

Araciel
06-30-2007, 09:15 PM
i'm always here. you know.

6PM and after any day for me, Tuesdays and thursday off this week. Damn time Zones, I'm in Idaho. Whats the hour difference?

Azure Chrysanthemum
07-01-2007, 02:00 AM
Idaho is on Pacific Time or one hour ahead. This post should has a time of 6:00 PM for me, if it's the same for you then you're Pacific time.

The Triumphant Hero
07-01-2007, 02:19 AM
I'm 3 hours after you, and I'm open most of the time, but Monday through Wednesday, I will be busy. My AIM is GrantaOmega116, and I will be on for most of the night, but not necessarily on this site, so if it's about to start, you may need to IM me.

Tasura
07-01-2007, 06:08 PM
Alright, I should be able to play tonight, depending on the time I get back from my cousins, it should be before 1am though, since my parents have to work tomorrow, or they might not since today is Canada day.

The Triumphant Hero
07-01-2007, 08:10 PM
My computer can't load #eoff. If you can give me the time that we are playing the day before we actually play, I'll try to get a computer at the library so I can play.

Tasura
07-02-2007, 02:41 AM
If we play tonight, it's going to be like, Midnight for you, can you really get a library computer that late? Also, if the java chat doesn't work, just download mIRC or something along those lines.

NeoCracker
07-03-2007, 12:03 AM
So when are we starting?

Tasura
07-03-2007, 12:31 AM
Void and I were ready last night at 9:30pm his time, and no one else was on, and as of right now, the chat server is not working with most people's mIRC.

I'm not sure what the problem is exactly, but I'm pretty sure that it can be blamed on me having to connect through AOL.

If they ran anything else where I live, I would have it, but according to most fast internet companies, the county I live in has no wiring other than phone lines, and the road I live on doesn't exist.

The Triumphant Hero

I live in Kentucky (in the USA), and I don't plan on moving anytime soon (too expensive), so I can't change it until somebody runs cable or something down my road (which doesn't exist).

The way I see it, I'm one of the 8 people that has AOL, so I should get preferred customer status or something.

Tasura
07-04-2007, 04:40 AM
Try /server irc.eyesonff.aexoden.com that's what I had to use to get connected to the chat server.

Azure Chrysanthemum

I've reworked the Hengeyokai a bit since they're a really crappy LA +1 race. Hengeyokai are now a LA 0 race with the following abilities:

Base Land Speed 30
The ability to shift from hybrid to animal form and back 1+character level times a day.
-2 Wisdom, +2 ability score granted by their hybrid form.
Skill bonus granted by their hybrid form.
Favored Class Wu-Jen

They lose the human form and the Shapeshifter subtype which is more LA specific anyway. The animal form ability is nice, but hardly overpowered. Honestly, they could probably stand to gain a little extra, but I'm leaving it at that for now.
