...had summoned monsters as part of the story? I can think of:

-FFVI, where Kefka sought to control the espers through their magicite forms (and one of your party was part-esper)
-FFVIII, where the GFs cause several of the characters to forget their time spent together at the orphanage
-FFIX, where Queen Brahne extracts Dagger's eidolons for her summoner powers

What other ones are there?

On a side note, the best name for summons (IMO) was "aeons" from FFX. The worst would have to be GF's. Everytime I saw that I thought "girlfriends" instead of "guardian forces." Similar in FFVII, where PHS always made me think "PMS." :p

I guess we could make this into a game of sorts. After this topic of summons is exhausted, someone can start on some other commonality.

Aeons were the driving force of FFX's plot.

And at least one Esper (Belias) had a role in FFXII's story.

FFIV - the land of summons, although it was a sidequest

Future espers had impact on the originals' plot

King Bahamut's role in FFI

Leviathan's role in FFII

Yeah...Aeons were a biggy in FFX. How could you miss it?

In FFVII:BC Fuhito wanted to use the Summon Zirconiade to kill everyone in the world.

Wow I can't believe I forgot X! And I talked about aeons right after too! Guess I wasn't thinking.

Now, I did not mean side quests to be included. I meant summoned monsters to be a key part of the game's plot. Therefore, Bahamut's role in the original wouldn't count, since it is a side quest.

IV maybe , but barely The King had you to bomb the summon village in the very begginning and when you thought Rydia died she was actually transported to the Land of Summons

There's really no point for Espers in XII except for the fact that one gets you through a door and that's it.
