View Full Version : Would you enjoy leveling up separate stats?

I've had an idea on a leveling system for a few years now.
This is how it goes:

Characters start out with exactly one "Level Bar" in their status screen.
This Level Bar is placed on the stat you want to level up.
As you level up, you eventually obtain more Level Bars (you'll have about five of them at LV99), and thus you can level up more stats in one go.

For example, if you want to make a character a powerhouse, you just need to have him/her level up the Strength stat; you can also invest in Defense.
The stats level up in the exactly same way as the characters themselves, i.e. they need experience points; in other words, there exist terms such as "Strength LV5" in this game.

As you level up in the battles, you'll get a message such as "Clodo's Strength gained a Level", "Clodo gained a Level Bar", and so on.

Do you think this would be a good idea? :)

I could see people feel that they can't level up evenly and have made bad decisions that would halt their game. But thats just what i see could happen.

It sounds kind of tedious... why not just have bonus points you can get at end-game through mini-games and other fun things, other than just grinding?

But yeah, it'd be one way to specialize your characters a lot.
i.e. One guy being the main tank through defense and vitality stats and gear (maybe even customize certain skills for him), another could be a healer that has mind and certain gear/skills, etc.

Anyways, just some random thoughts. :p

This was done well in EA's The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age. Levelling up provides a general increase to all stats, but also provides a number of points that can be used to raise particular stats. Everyone keeps getting stronger, but you're free to develop each character's stats in whatever direction suits you best. You can decide who'll be a specialist mage or healer, who's best with weapons, and who's the defensive powerhouse. Pretty good system.

Pretty sure you can raise specific stats of your characters on Ragnarok Online like this, but I can't remember if you get a general stat raise or not because it's been a couple of years since I played.

I want a game with that and~!

Some form of Weapon Mastery that allows you to master various Weapon Specific Attacks (It works so well in FFXI ^^~)

It would be wonderful >___<~~

ah i remember that game...it was actually kinda' cool. only thing is it was really linear and the fights, though pretty cool, were even MORE important than in other RPGS

i did love the leveling system.

Hmm, an interesting idea. One I'd certainly be interested in seeing tried, but the general gist of putting points into whichever area of your character you wish isn't altogether new. Then again, the nuances here I'm picking up as I think more about the idea add complexity and subtlety that could be very interesting. I do very much like the idea this could present where you could (If the level bars can be stacked on a single stat?) make someone with one or two very strong areas, at the expense of other stats, and do so quite quickly.

oooh and something like an experience egg, or character classes that get xp bonuses to certain stats/skills (such as a fighter gaining more strength when leveling said stat than, say, a mage would.)

I do quite enjoy those types of systems. And the progression of more stat points to allocate as you go on is also fun. In the MMORPG games I have played this type of system is common(though there aren't always more points available as you go on).

Anyways it would be a nice idea, though maybe not the most original(I think I have even seen the 'stat levels' before). But then again it isn't like you can be 100% original these days, you are always going to draw from something. The deciding factor is if you put together a good combination or not. And it does sound like your combination is solid.

To tell the truth if you made a game with a 'classless' system that had the leveling process decided by the player I would probably be all over it. But that is because I so love The Fourth Coming and it does that sort of thing.

Something you didn't mention would be that perhaps you should have the skills(magic, weapon skills, etc) level up capable as well(maybe have the skills unlocked for learning when you hit a certain stat requirement). And yes I pulled from The Fourth Coming though doubtlessly it has been implementing thousands of other times.

there are a number of games like this. Lunar Knights gives you points that you need to add to 3 stats, health, magic, strength. Summon Knight: Swordcraft story gives you points upon every level that you distribute to strength, defense, or agility. FFII has you raise specific stats based on how often you use it. Fire Emblem Path of Radiance has a fixed stat growth upon the second play through where certain equipment raises certain stats.

It's not a revolutionary idea... just saying

Isnt that like the lvl system in Oblivion?

Yes, it's true that a lot of MMO's have this kind of system in one way or another. WoW has those talent trees, and FFXI has merit points. Merit points can let you spend points in all the base stats like STR, MND, INT, CHR, VIT, Crit-up Rate, etc. and also in things to improve or give you skills.

MapleStory leveling up system is like, identical to this.

And FFX-2 ability system is quite similair to what you described with that Level Gauge.

Yes, that is how it works. However, each job level gains a set amount of stat points in areas depending on job class. (For example, Mage classes usually get higher stats in INT and... DEX (is that right?) and a thief class would get higher stats in AGI and DEX.)
