Put soap and warm water in it, and let it soak. Then after awhile, scrub it to hell.

I'm lazy, so I'd just throw it out. :p
But seriously, soak that thing in soapy warm water for a veeery long time and then see if you can scrub it off.

What they said, but using as hot as you can get the water (perhaps boil some). Let it soak for an hour, check on it. Scrub with a scrub pad. Empty. Repeat once. Then put a hell of a lot of elbow grease into it.

1. Unload a buttload of chemicals on it.
2. Leave
3. Come back
4. Rinse and scrub/scrape
I'm a cook so I'm used to that stuff.

For future reference it's easiest to make a paste of water & baking soda, rub into burnt area, and let it sit for an hour or so.

It was going to be pasta, so I put in the water, milk, butter, and olive oil so it wouldn't boil over, then I forgot about it for an hour or two and it turns out that stuff will turn into black :skull::skull::skull::skull:.

Shlup has it. Don't listen to anyone else. Might need to let it sit a bit longer, because that's some serious business burn right there. Don't scrap at it,you'll just end up damaging the pot.

Let's just talk about other cleaning tips.
on the BBCA (so I assume it comes on in the UK) is a show called How Clean is Your House, and they always have these great cleaning tips, but I never write them down.
Apparently lifetime is carrying it in the US. Here are some of their tips. (http://www.lifetimetv.com/shows/clean/video/cleaning_tips.html) Apparently, vodka is a deodorizer. You wouldn't think it if you woke up hung over.
EDIT: The best cleaning tip ever is to use banana peels to clean the leaves of plants. It gets off the dust, makes a protective coat on the leaf, and gives the plant nutrients. Hurray!

Whoops, sorry... meant to say, "What were you really cooking?"
I tossed all that stuff in a pan once to get ready to boil some carrots and forgot about it, when I came back to the pan it didn't look nearly that good

That same thing happened to me once. Well, to my stepmother. She just cooked pasta sauce as normal, out of a jar. But then it turned into that. Well, I had to clean up that night, so I actually just picked out the crustiness with a knife. :P Scratched the pot a bit, but oh well! Knives solve all problems.

Didn't Mythbusters bust that myth?

I know at large theatres, instead of washing the costumes every time, they will spray them with vodka.

IIRC Mythbusters confirmed the vodka deodorizing myth.
For me, I like to cook in cast iron pans. Those you can just stick into a fire for a few minutes, let em cool off, and rinse out the ash.
