I'd make this into a poll but I think too many people here would click "other".
To me, what really makes an FF game into an FF game is not chocobos, moogles, including a dude named Cid, genderless artwork by Amano, random encounters, the victory fanfare, an airship, a battle theme that starts with a catchy "same note six times followed by the one below it twice" bassline or a flambuoyantly camp "male" villain, but a certain very subtle thing that's always present in the background: The names of the items, equipment and spells, like Haste, Meteor, Regen, Firaga, Micro Missiles and Ultima Weapon.
If I see spells named "Shadow Flare" and "Panacea" or a full recovery item named "Elixir" in a non-FF game it tends to surprise me.
