I did, in the hopes that it would change some of the dialogue in the game. It didn't.

I always do that.
After my first game, it just seemed like the right thing to do.
Plus its funny in the dialogue at Cosmo Canyon when the guy outside says to Cloud "Thanks for bringing Nanaki home" and Cloud says "Who's Nanaki?" and then the guy replies with "Who's Nanaki? Nanaki is Nanaki!"
I still get a chuckle out of that.. haha.

If you want even more fun in the game, name all of the playable characters after any of the proganoists, with Sephiroth obviously producing the best results. Par exampler;
Sephiroth: Sephiroth... Don't listen to him... Close your ears! Close your eyes!
Sephiroth: What's wrong, Sephiroth? I'm not affected by it. ...I wasn't paying attention
to him.
Sephiroth: All that talk of Hojo constructing you is a lie. Don't we have our
memories together? Being kids together, starlit night...
Sephiroth: Ha, ha, ha... Sephirtoh... Why are you so worried and scared by those
words? Hmm... Shall I show everyone here what's in your heart? Ha, ha, ha...
You look like you're not feeling well.
Sephiroth: ...Sephiroth? Is Sephiroth right?
Sephiroth: Sephiroth...

Only did it once though, I usually just leave it Red or RedXIII
...you know what's fun? Renaming Aeris to be Elvis. It's really funny at the end of Disc One and near the end of the game.

I do things like that all the time. It works well in FF9 to. I rename Steiner "Rusty" Vivi "Puck" and Dagger "Garnet" Once I got bored and named Aeris "Slum Drunk."

Of course.
I do the same in Chrono Trigger as well, renaming the characters to their 'real' names. Of course in that game you can change the names after a certain point.
I have yet to try a Sephiroth game, however. It sounds like great fun.

Red XIII. And the main XIII character has red hair.

But it was made on purpose.

I go for whatever I feel like at the time: Shorten it to "Red" or change it to "Nanaki"... I actually prefer "Red" anyway. (Unless I'm playing my German copy, then he's "Rot XIII" instead. Cloud becomes Claud, Aeris becomes Äris, Yuffie becomes Yufie and Vincent becomes Vinzent... it came out in Germany before the spelling reform of 1998 so it doesn't look like it was deemed necessary to phonetically change the characters' names.)
Never called Cait Sith "Reeve" before, I'll have to this time.

I usually just leave names as they are, but I couldn't bring myself to leave Dagger's name as is. It just didn't seem right like that, so I changed it back to Garnet. I used to change names, but I changed that before my second time playing Final Fantasy VII.

"Who's Nanaki? Nanaki is Nanaki!"He says that no matter what you call him.Indeed. That scene wouldn't really make sense otherwise, since the Cosmo Canyon bloke has no idea that Nanaki's been known as Red XIII. When he says that "Nanaki is Nanaki", he's saying "he is what he is", a deliberately vague and quasi-new-age way of summing up the character without saying anything genuinely useful.
I've called him Nanaki in the past; sometime, I'll do a run where everone's called Sephiroth or Aeris is 'my balls', since that one's a timeless classic. I called her Aerith one time, but it messes up a couple of lines where the possessive form of her name is usually given as Aeris'.
Hmm... maybe it could be fun to call Cloud "my angsty shadow"? Could lead to some entertaining lines.
"Because, my angsty shadow, you are... a puppet".
"I'm sorry, I'm going to stay here with my angsty shadow..."
"This is my angsty shadow. He's my bodyguard".
In some instances, it gives a pretty literal - if cynical - picture of Cloud's character, and how the other characters (especially Cloud, Tifa, Aerith) all act toward him.
To think about it... very soon, it'll only be through games like FFVII where we can have the fun of giving puerile nicknames to characters in an otherwise-serious story. Voice-acting might add something to a game, but it takes away one of the less-renowned replay options.

Of course. Then there wouldn't be such a big argument on how to pronounce Tidus' name because you would have heard it spoken in the game. I mean, seriously. He's not a bad comedian with a short-lived sitcom. But that's a whole other thread.

I keep Red's name as RedXIII, mostly because I never use him so I really don't care.
On my first FFIX save I named Steiner Obvious so he would introduce himself as "Captain Obvious" at certain points. Man was I corny back then.
I named Garnet "nope" because I couldn't be bothered to think of a good name for her. Later in the game I would get confused and think there was some error when "nope" was in the middle of a sentence.

Perhaps I'm some kind of FFVII traitor or something, but in my latest playthrough of FFVII that I started last week I just left him as Red XIII. The two previous playthroughs I called him Nanaki though. Then again, I'm the person who called Dagger 'Garnet' in my last FFIX playthrough.

Grim, that's a good point, maybe Square intended us to do this? Because Aeris dying is a metaphor for Cloud losing his balls? And how not too far into Disc 2 you could say... he figuratively loses his balls?

And it would explain Aeris' rather sudden feelings for the spikey headed blonde fellow.
In answer to the thread, I prettymuch always call him Nanaki, after my first time playing through.
I've been tempted to name Cloud and Barrett as "DONUT" and "LARRY", respectively.

Simple. Your first playthrough was after finding out Red's true name.
A name that fits logically for Amaranth is Dragon. But, how about Fart, Gasblow, Backwind, Poo, and Snot. Also, Anus, Atheist, Crotch, Dork, Dufus, Irritant.
