Do I need to play the original X-Men Legends and X-Men Legends II in order to understand the plot of Marvel Ultimate Alliance?

no you do not, I own all 3, and M:UA does not relate to the X-Men L games in anyway

For that matter you can jump right into X-Men Legends II without playing Legends. They really don't connect to eachother in any meaningful way.

I like the second one alot more than the first.

but it has alot of imbalances (as you do with that many character customizations possible in a non-guild wars game).
