Black Mage-ness isn't about bieng usefull, and contrary to common belief its not a class either, it's a state of mind, first practiced by the people who refused to "sword up", brought to you by the people who say to "suit up" in that the only defense against un-indivisualizing through excessive indivisualizing is by indivisually seeming "in"...

In simpler words depending on how you look at it:

"Fighting using fire against fire with fire by blasting fireballs at people, w/ a blizzard on the side"

or you could say

"in-counter-of slaying the sword-up-his-rectum-wanting viking with a sword up his rectum in a pathetic attempt for vengeance, I'll just blast him with magic and hope he doesn't like it despite that'd most likely just become another type of viking funeral, which according to my kinsman from too many years-to-count-ago has become a viking funeral if you add a boat into the equation"
