Are there any parts/side quests in the game that you simply cannot stand?
I can name quite a few:
The process of getting Doomtrain
The Dollet exam
The D-District Prison
Galbadia Missile Base
Going through the Deling sewers as the "Gateway Team"
The Basketball Court scene at Trabia Garden
Destroying the Propagators
Laguna dreams (However on my 4th and current playthrough, they were not as bad)
Most of these I dislike because they take so long and aren't important to the story.

I didn't like going up and down the stairs of the D-District Prison :P
I liked everything in that place except for having to go up and down all of the time >.<
I suppose it's not as bad as the taking the stairs option of getting into the Shinra building of FFVII :P

The only thing that took too long that I didn't really like doing in that game was killing Tonberries to get Tonberry King to come out. However, I killed twenty and the king in less than an hour, so it wasn't really that big a deal.
The trick with Doomtrain is to have everything you need except the Malboro tentacles by the time you get to Esthar. That way, all you have to do is mug and run. You might get lucky and have Odin come out on a Malboro as well. It's a great opportunity to level up and collect the horns of the Mesmerizes. They can be turned into all sorts of medicine and healing magic.

Oh gawd, that took forever DX
I just had someone use Kamikaze, then after the battle I used a Phoenix Down. Of course, I had to switch Aura and Triple to the other two party members n.n

I like killing propagators. I usually aura rinoa or get her into critical and have her angel wing it up. It's very effective 8)
The prison is probably most annoying. Also the stuff with the shumi village. I like the place, but it's so inane and long :(

what about the monster gauntlet you face while getting to ultima weapon? an extremely difficult battle every two steps, or every 4 or 8 depending on if you have enc-half or none. even so, fighting these hard enemies without runnning away over and over again takes an age. and then you probably get killed by ultima anyway.

The D-District Prison
Galbadia Missile Base
I hated that part :( What I most loved in ff8 were fights and when the game was really slow I found it boring :(

All of the events that you listed are important to the story except for Doomtrain and the Propagators. The only events that were boring for me were the Shumi Village and the Deling City sewers. If you have Enc-None for the D-District Prison it's much easier.

Those fights are only hard/take a long time if you have weak junctions. Enc-Half/None won't work because the battles occur at fixed points. I had no troubles at all against the Ruby Dragons. A few physical attacks took them down.

Just the amount of level grinding and item farming I always put myself through in order to have the best magic as early as I know how to get it... within certain levels of patience anyway.
Lord knows I'm never doing Lionheart so early in the game again; the earliest I've done it is disc 2, and even that was a total bore.
The only actual section I don't like is the final Laguna dream sequence. Zzzzzzz...

Anyhow, I agree with a few you listed. Killing the propagators sucks because that section of the story is so good that I don't want to be burdened with that stretch of fighting. Hate the sewers.
The Dollet examination is one of the most exciting parts of the game, man!

Oh gawd, those were soooo hard I hated them!!!! I did good until I got to the section with Ruby Dragons, then Iron Giants >.<
...but there's a way where you don't have to do that. I forget how, but if you pick the right numbers, you can go to a secret room that recharges the power thingy so you can spend more on the bottom without Zell breaking the machine :P

Such things are not necessary unless you want to level Seifer to 60-ish at the exam or boost everyone's stats at the end of the game. You can get any magic regardless of your levels.

I disagree about the Dollet exam, I thought that was great! What with the FMV's in the background and the like. I found it very exciting.
I find that all the things I did not like at all came from the first half of disc 2. The Prison was the absolute worst. Then came Galbadia Missile Base mission, which I found terribly boring. It started to get a little better after that, but it wasn't until the basketball court scene that the game really started to get awesome.

Isn't Jack the first member of the CC group you encounter? I have an horrible memory for names. If it is the first one, make sure you've won at least 15 games in BG and find a male cadet around the directory.
If it is the other guy I'm thinking about, it's a male SeeD (I think?) that walks between the cafeteria, the dormitory, and the parking lot. If he's not there, just leave and re-enter the area a couple of times until you see him around.

I've played through Final Fantasy VIII so many times, all the scenes are a little kind of repetitive and boring. But I'll try to dig back to the first moment I picked up that PS controller and placed that shiny disc into the disc reader.
In chronological order, (Warning, Minor Spoilers)
Best Scenes
Dollet Field Exam - Dude, that scene where Squall looks up from the boat just takes the freakin' cake.
Exploring Timber for the first time - It was nice. A real actual town to explore in.
Galbadian Garden - Nice plotline development. And Irvine's an idiot.
Deling City Assassination - One of the best parts in the game. Except the sewer part.
Missile Base - Some of the stuff they say is just way too funny, depending on the party members you choose to infiltrate with.
Balamb Garden at FH - Choosing a band and that whole Squall + Rinoa scene was way too cool.
Balamb Garden VS Galbadia Garden - Another top notch scene I'd play again any day.
Lunar Base - Nice plot development. And seeing Riona like that made my heart bleed.
Ragnarok - Music was awesome, Propagators are scary, and tough. But it's a test of your strength, and the reward is amazing.
Lunatic Pandora - I loved the opening scene where Ragnarok totally pwnz the shields.
Fighting Jumbo Cactuar - Leviathan ftw. And Cactuar = 20AP ea. ftw.
Fighting Bahamut and Ultima Weapon - Pure awesome intense fighting. The questions were a little gay, though, and the whole stairs down to the bottom to Ultima Weapon were just killer.
P.S What is with everyone grinding up to level 60? Don't you know that enemies level with you? Your actually putting yourself at a disadvantage if your high level. I beat the game at like, level 30. It's just good magic to junction with, and AP for great GF skills, that's all you need to do good in the game.

Leveling from initial to 100 with Up abilities equipped will give around an additional 85 point boost to 4 stats. This coupled with the best magic junctioned will give you an even higher advantage over enemies, and will make Omega Weapon much easier.

I want to add the UP abilties to my junctioning, but I just don't have room for them, how much does the ability list extend to?
I'm at level 74 for squall, the others are 66, this is still good enough to gain points out of the UPs, but what should I sacrifice in my other abilities place (HP: +80%) - too important too remove (Str : +40%) - also important, so any advice on anything, and answer the previous question above please.

There are Ups for HP, Str, Vit, Mag, and Spr. Since you won't be able to reach max HP without HP Up, you should switch either Str or Mag with HP at about 80-85 (not sure where exactly, this is just a guess). Whether you switch Str or Mag depends on the character.
You should definitely equip 4 if you plan on using them. The easiest way to level up with them is to put Quistis in critical and spam Degenerator at the ICH.
I believe Cactuar can learn all 5 of them, and the other GFs can also learn them. So you can have 2 characters leveling up with Bonuses at the same time.
(Note: my bad, they're called Bonuses, not Ups. Ups are the items that increase your stats. Silly me.)

You have to visit the closed store in Esthar a bunch of times. The other one you'll have to make yourself. Refine a Dark Matter into a Shaman Stone and then into a Rosetta Stone. You only need to make one, since Eden can learn the third Abilityx4.

Sadly enough, I left it too late to collect the GF - Doomtrain, but I got Bahumut from DSRC, and he was easy to beat. I think I've set up a good junction on all characters, although Selphie can only use two abilities while the other guys can extend to four. Is Ultima Weapon frightfully strong, and can I flee from it once I draw Eden? (I don't want to of course, but just wondering)

Remember that once you beat Ultima Weapon the fixed encounters will be gone. Make sure to get your supply of Dark Matter before you fight Ultima, or you will be forced to use alternative methods that are much slower. You can get another Rosetta Stone from one of the bosses in the final area in disc 4.
Ultima Weapon is a pushover if you have the right junctions. A few Limit Breaks will take it down (1 Lion Heart if you're lucky). And no, you can't run from it.

My characters bolstered 11 levels just from running through the DSRC, and I got a lot of valuable items. I can get Zell's ultimate weapon now, and have already got Selphie's and Squall's. I got 32 curse pains, 4 star fragments, 4 fury fragments and other items, nice stuff I'd say. So I'm gonna stay here till I'm level 100 I guess.
