Okay, this is very annoying.

I just installed a new motherboard, CPU and cooling system but I had to format my HDD because Windows wasn't booting up properly. Which was fine, I don't mind doing that as I had everything backed up.

The way I do it is I install Windows 2000 Professional, then I upgrade to Windows XP Professional. It worked last time, but now it is telling me that I can't activate it anymore (it is a legit version).

Is there any way I can get them to send me a new code? Because what the activation program sent me to was a place to order a Windows XP Activation Code for $250!!! My copy of Windows XP didn't even cost that much, and I may as well just get Vista if that is the case!!!

What should I do?

the route I would take is keygen, but then I don't think you should pay for windows if you can help it :p

I do. Give Microsoft a call and explain your situation.

Or sod that, and find a crack or a keygen. Either way is good. :D

Well, I will give them a ring and see what they can do.

If they won't help me and I need to get a crack, will I still be able to receive security updates? That's basically the only reason I pay for Windows XP.

Also, I can't seem to find a copy of Windows XP to buy, only Vista. Is Vista worth getting? When is the service pack coming for it?

Edit: BTW I have Service Pack 2 installed and about 80 security updates it just finished installing then.

Errm... I think so. They've got Genuine Windows Validation when it comes to some updates (Windows Media Player 11 and Internet Explorer 7), but I think that they patch the critical stuff and security updates without checking for validation.

I'm not 100% sure how activation comes into Genuine Windows Validation.

I'd leave Vista for a while. Maybe another year or so. I don't know about a service pack for it yet - but I do know that Microsoft are working on Service Pack 3 for Windows XP.

I've never had any validation problems, but then I make a point not to download 'updates' so it's not been questioned very much :p

also for the record, I was not ahem encouraging this, just saying what I would do 8)

Just follow the ring them up instructions, fill out the details and they'll give you an activation code, they even give you a toll-free number to call them on.

Thanks, I will ring them up tomorrow and see what they will do for me.

And I am too scared to PM Yams.

Calling is a good idea. You want an OS that will pass their identity tests for the updates and all the rest of it... and if they don't agree with you, insist on talking to their bosses. It can work miracles.

Yet you are more than willing to pay for a crippled OS to run on native hardware (mac) :P

I had the same issue. I proved I bought the copy, they gave me a new key. I am American though, so they were obligated to make me happy.

G'luck!

Replacing your motherboard will generally warrant a Windows reinstall anyway since so much has changed hardware-wise, and the installed HAL may no longer be correct for the new motherboard anyway hence why Windows can no longer boot :p

Windows doesn't have real permissions. It has silly "ownership." :p
They're not real permissions unless you can chmod them. :p

They are real permissions because they can easily grant access for some users and deny access for others.

I would presume the command cacls would be the Windows equivalent to chmod. As much as I hate to say it, I prefer the granularity ACLs give over the standard unix security model - I know you can get extensions to allows linux to have this level of granularity too, but I've not had a chance to play with those :p

I'm understanding you bought an entire copy of windows for the updates?

Raymond.cc (the webpage) has the windows geniune advantage bypass file.
