View Full Version : Maechen's Test of Knowledge

Goldenboko

This is the first time I'm trying an FFX version of my Ragtimer came to town thread!

For newcomers this is a simple game where your knowledge of FFX by answering questions. Let's go over the rules...
One of these threads was once closed because of off topic chatter, so no of topic chatter UNLESS its paired with an answer or a question about the thread...

Ex

OOC: lol yeah right.

Hey GB, I thought _____ was right as well

The point system works like this
1 point for... Answering a question correctly, or Noticing an error in my question
2 points for... Noticing an error in my question, and answering the question correctly.
3 points for... Finding my answer to be incorrect and providing a correct answer and a source to back up your correction.
I will wait a little while and declare all who answered it correctly with points... please though hide your answers in spoiler tags, unmarked answers=No points.

Well, let's see how I can do with FFX we'll start with an easy question...

Q1. Where do you first meet Maechen?

Renmiri

On the Mi'hen Highroad ruins

Goldenboko

I'll give the point to you only because its the first time I've done it in this forum so it'll be new to lots of people.

Q4. How much money does it take to bribe Chimera Brain? And what do you get for bribing it?

Tavrobel
08-01-2007, 01:01 AM
Depends. Are you using the failure of a version called New Jersey PAL or NTSC? One takes 20x HP for a set amount of items, while the other takes around 10x for less.

196k for two Level 4 lock Spheres. If PAL, then you don't deserve to breathe. Which is already difficult enough, as you have already been banned from breathing as it is. So I guess you owe me your first child. Screw the points system.

Goldenboko

Crap I forgot about the version differences in bribe, although I woulda accepted either.

Thanks for ruining the question by not marking spoilers Tav!

True or False?
Q12. PAL is a European only version.

Tavrobel
08-05-2007, 07:14 PM
Mostly because this is a technical question and it could apply to any Playstation game. Anyways, PAL is the region used mostly in Europe, because of the different television specifications. However, with a modchip or a similar appropriate conversion device, one can play PAL games on NTSC regions, or other the way around. You also have to have your TV adjusted to account for the difference in energy requirements in comparison from American and European TVs.

In short, it's sold in Europe, but is not restricted. Since this includes different technology as opposed to purely Final Fantasy X. False?

Shooting Star: Damage one enemy, or just knock it off the battlefield (effectively killing it) if you get the button combo. Naturally this doesn't work on many bosses, though it's a godsend against Seymour's Guado Guardians in a No Sphere Grid game :p
Banishing Blade: Damage one enemy, also causes Full Break if you get the button combo. Provided the enemy isn't 100% immune, it will always work.

True or False?
Q12. PAL is a European only version.

False?

You answered this question fair and square :P

qwertysaur

Yes. Zanamato can kill them. Or you could keep getting the right awnser and eventually do 999,999 damage to it.

Tavrobel
08-17-2007, 03:25 AM
No, he is not gay. He seems to have a flair for flirting with women. This is evidenced by the first several cutscenes, in which he signs a ball belonging to the girl that sits in the east block, front row, fifth from the right. A few hours later, he is seen in an "artistic" cutscene that is clearly meant to symbolize him, Yuna, and a very smelly operation.

Effectively, no, unless you have some wicked sick luck, or wrote the code yourself and are as accurate as a random integet generator. Doom requires 200 turns, and Urns do not have turns. All damage attacks are reduced, and Urns are immune to most effects, including, but not limited to, Death.

And don't bring Zanmato into this, so help me god, I will go all American on your ass like you would not believe. It never procs, and goddamn it, it's annoying as hell.

The answer was false, it only removes him from battle, extra point to everyone who said "and lowers his HP to 1," I had forgotten bout that so you guys get a little reward. And an extra 2 points to Endless. because I had never heard of that formula. Oh and I'm gonna give Firo an extra point because I forgot that he didn't get AP.

Also jeo2388 your answer is to vague, I need a straight true or false.

Q31. Maester Mika's age is never given, but we can assume at the VERY least he is...
A. 50
B. 60
C. 70
D. 40
E. None of the above.
Extra point for an explanation.

Little Blue

None of the Above. It is stated that he is in his fiftieth year of being Grand Maester. Out of the avaiable ages, the most likely means he became Grand Maester at the age of twenty which seems ridiculously young for such a high position.

As an aside, it is however mentioned in the FFX ultimania guides that Mika is 99 years old. Translated nuggets of said guide can be found here: http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/detail.php?board=2000008&topic=21477330&message=231461476 but how much weight you want to give to them I'll leave you to decide.

hmm... apparently my link won't be spoilerised, and though I doubt a floating "here" will do any harm, I'll unlink it...

At the VERY least, as the question says, Mika is fifty.

Lulu: Maester Mika is the leader of all the people of Spira. He's come all the way from Bevelle. The tournament is being held to honour his fifty years as maester.

This of course assumes he was born a maester and worked his way up to Grand Maester later, since Lulu doesn't say it's been 50 years since he became Grand Maester.

However, his actual age is 99, as stated in FFX's Ultimania guide.

I choose option E.

tidus_rox

I think the guide says that he is 99, so none of the above.

Tavrobel
09-09-2007, 08:59 PM
The answer is none of the above. Just like in the epic poem of Beowulf, FFX uses poetic lisence in order to describe lengths of time. It can be compared, then, that neither character is the age at which people thinks they are. Beowulf's reign is described as being "fifty years long." Coincidence? I says not! A realistic age during the time at which Beowulf was written was not much higher than 50 at all, and is comparable to Spira. Not only that, Mika has been dead for who knows how long; what is your criteria for age? Since birth until present? Since birth until actual death? Observed age? I find this entire farce to be faulty and smacking of failed logic. Therefore, I submit to you, that the answer is not contained within the given choices. By using the transitive property, we may also deduce that your face is at least fifty years old.

Q32.
When is the first time you see the airship in FFX?

Little Blue
09-09-2007, 09:24 PM
We first see the Airship when Tidus is diving with the Al Bhed before it's dug up from the sea bed (You end up swimming right over it after you've turned on all the lights and beat Tros). Though how you want to apply a True/False to that I dunno...

Tavrobel

Yes, the internet and all of its facilities are very hard to obtain. There's quite a large number of Ultimania translations on the internet, so there is no reason to discount them. Additionally, they were written/sanctioned by the FF Writers, which means it comes from the source. Without the Ultimanias, there would be a very failing lack of knowledge when it comes to explaining the game.

It's not like EUD triggers where the community has only had them for a week before they are patched away, it's become part of the identity of the game, as much as could be. History has multiple books; does that mean the account of history should be discounted when you have failed to read the text?

I fail to see how several Ultimania quoting people here have NOT succeeding in providing an explanation. If I told you that Benzene is one of those compounds containing a Carbon-ring, and gave you a source, that it would be incorrect?

My point is to have knowledge on the game. Many hardcore fans have never read the ultimania guides and it is generally unfair to use them. Also then we have to trust that the translations are 100% accurate.

When Tidus is on the salvaging mission with Rikku, you can see the airship in the water. The airship is only visable after you defeat Tros.

They are equally a part of the game as the game itself. Accuracy is not a concern. It's pretty difficult to screw up proper nouns, which is almost the entire thing. So, I fail to see how it is unfair to use them, especially if there is no other explanation within the game itself.

Might I remind you that the same "hardcore fans" you so highly speak of also generally thought that Tidus traveled 1000 years into the future, even when there is no evidence in the game to support it other than "I think I travelled into the future."

Firo Volondé

Do you want the very first time you see it or the first time you see it and say "Whoa, an airship!"? The former is after defeating Tros, where Rikku is in your party as ????. It's "the big prize" that the Al Bhed are salvaging. However, at that point it isn't clear what it is (at least, it wasn't to me). The airship in its restored glory is first seen at Home. Are we allowed two guesses? If not, I'll say at the start near the Salvage Ship, since that's the more literal answer.

Q31. Name all of the rewards possible the first 3 times you fight Belgime (sorry I can't think how to spell her name, extra point if you spell it right :O)

abrojtm
09-12-2007, 12:26 AM
In your first battle with Belgemine (Mi'hen Highroad), you can get an Echo Ring if you win and a Seeker's Ring if you lose.
On the Moonflow, you'll get the Summoner's Soul, plus two Dragon Scale if you win.
In the Calm Lands, you will get the Aeon's Soul. Also you will get 30 Power Spheres for a win, or one Speed Sphere for a loss.

Lastly, this system of using spoiler tags to answer is ineffective; I can almost guarantee that some of the answers will be copies of previous spoilered answers... In fact, I thought about putting in a red herring wrong answer just to see if people would copy it. Oh well, I guess you don't want a flood of PM's so there isn't much other option.

I realize that the current system is a bit faulty, but the system I use is constantly being fine-tuned, originally it was a first come first serve bases, and that REALLY didn't work. The current system is okay, because I can occasionally see when I suspect cheating.

I've had a few ideas for rule changes that could decrease cheating and/or make it less effective, that I planned on announcing at the 50th question, so I'll take all ideas until then (post them with your questions).

I haven't read this guide and I think I'm a hardcore fan. I would not make the mistake about time travelling, nor would anyone who paid attention to the plot, i.e.Tidus came from DZ not the the past. Not than I'm knocking guides, but surely it would be unfair to assume all players have read them. I'm with Boco on this one.

Having said that, I think this qu is going to beat me but here goes:

an echo ring or a seekers ring (if you lose, so don't know if that counts as a reward), the summoners soul and the aeons soul

What I love/hate about this quiz is how u c an answer u know and then scroll down praying that the answer isn't already there.

Depends. True if you mean Moogles as in real creatures (e.g. FF IX). More likely you mean any representation of a moogle, in which case, false. There are a series of weapons for Lulu that use the moogle doll.

Firo Volondé
09-14-2007, 11:25 PM
No livings moogles are seen in Spira - like hobbits, they are very good at hiding. :mog: However, occasionally, some are caught, killed, stuffed, and made into weapons for black mages. :( So, false.

Now, this was tough, but the answer I was looking for was True, there are no moogles in FFX. There are dolls, but they can't count, because if you counted them that would mean there are Dragons in real life because we have dolls of them :p So no point change.

I would like to moan about not getting a pt for the moogle question. I said it depends what you mean and gave an answer for each which seems fair enough. In addition, your pt about real and toy dragons is not relevant because toy dragons are not "alive" in the same way Lulu's moogles are when she uses them. Yes toys can move but its only mechanical not a living force. Can you really tell the difference between Lulu's doll attacking someone and a real moogle doing so?

Cant answer latest qu as have never seen Penance which I believe I can say without too much shame. My friend is quite close to activating him I think so if he hurries I may get back to you.
