Ah, good for you! A while ago, during a financial crisis, I sold almost every single game and console I owned (with the exception of those that also technically belonged to my sister; the SNES and the N64), but kept my copies of FF7, one of which I bought in Germany to help me improve on the language :P

Well, seeing as I wondered if the topic title would have an alternate meaning in the form of "I need to do something different on my next playthrough", I recommend either...

1. No Materia. Believe me, this is way easier than it sounds.
2. Job classes. Designate an FF job to each character (mix and match the dead simple ones, like Knight and Monk for instance) and only ever equip them with the respective Materia. Protip: Make Vincent the Summoner.

You could just do what I did and switch it with a friend's copy when they're not looking.
