I don't really know too much about Indie rock or that stuff kind of stuff. Ask my sister though, that's her thing.

Old Modest Mouse (though their major label albums are also awesome).

For current ones, I'll go with the Shins if you count Sub Pop as still being an indie label and The Arcade Fire if you don't.

Slayer.Wait, what?

I'd say Sufjan Stevens, if you consider him indie, because he is a god among men.

I don't remember if The Moon and Antartica was on a major label or not, but it's pretty fantastic.

I like a lot of small-time rappers, like MC Frontalot. I guess I don't listen to too much indie otherwise.

Slayer.Wait, what?
They used to be on an independent label. Even if it was only for three albums (one of them live).

I was just saying, I wasn't agreeing.

Yeah it was released on Epic I believe. It's between that and The Lonesome Crowded West for my favorite album of theirs.

And I completely forgot about Soofyan. He indeed is the only man who can still garner my respect after wearing wings to a performance.

Not sure if some of these are strictly indie...but:

The SHINS because they are smurfing fantastic.
Interpol.
The Strokes.
The Postal Service.
Sufjan Stevens.
Iron & Wine.
I kinda like Bright Eyes too.
Neutral Milk Hotel.
I used to really like The Decemberists but now I'm a tad bored of them. :p

The Microphones are my absolute favourite, but I mostly like bands on independent labels (e.g. Neutral Milk Hotel, Sufjan, Iron and Wine, At the Drive-In etc.).

I would have gone for Joanna Newsom, but she isn't really a band.

Umm...approximately 65% of those bands are rather well known and somewhat mainstream/post-mainstream. (Yes, I read that you said that many are not indie, but many of those don't even qualify.)

Yay at the mentions of Of Montreal :D (of of XD) they are maybe my favourite band full stop. I hate labels though, look at people disputing the "indie" tag already XD

But of the other bands mentioned I also love animal collective, arcade fire, the shins (probably my second favourite band), and I dont know what else i like is "indie" so I'll leave it at that :p

<3.

also, is this just a thread for indie kids to one-up eachother by flaunting bands no one has ever heard of?

if it is, I'm in. I love "man man" <3.
