I've been looking for a website that shows which new games come out each week and what they sell and what all the games sell each week. I wanted a video game sales chart website, and I found it at vgchartz.com website, and it's great!

I've been browsing around and it appears that most top games top out at up to 500,000 copies sold in their first week, with a few exceptions. Final Fantasy XII got 600,00 copies sold(not shipped) in it's first week! Kingdom Hearts 2 sold 700,000 in it's first week! I also found out that the Playstation 2 version of Madden NFL 2007 sold 1.1 million and the Xbox 360 version sold 600,00 copies!

Then I found this...

...drum roll...

On November 9th 2004 a Xbox game was released, you guys may know what game I'm talking about already. It was Halo 2 and it sold 2.4 MILLION COPIES IN IT'S FIRST WEEK!!! After seeing this number I was in shock that a game would sell that much in it's first week. This is pretty insane! It was the big holiday season game of 2004, 2005 had Call of Duty 2, 2006 had The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, and 2007 will have Mass Effect(or will Rock Band sell more?, Also Halo 2 is coming out early on Sep 24th!)

Here's the link to the American weekly chart for the week we just finished, which had the debut of Madden Nfl 2008

What do you think? :D

The whole '2.4 million copies in the first week' is the reason why Halo is the most powerful game franchise right now.

I've linked to this site a few times before, particularly when people try to say that FF is a more popular game than Dragon Quest in Japan. You can check sales for the 3 major gaming regions on there as well.

I can't access that site anymore from my job though, they finally blocked it.

Thanks for the link, I've been looking for something like this for quite some time. Hopefully more people will look to sites like this when they are wondering why that niche JRPG game they were looking forward to never made a western release.

I typed in video game sales charts on google.com and found this, it's like Boxofficemojo.com website. What other websites are similar I wonder? Also, JKTrix, isn't it possible to go to a special hacking type of a website and then type in the address of vgchartz.com and you can access it? I've heard of something like this, can anybody answer it?

Gah! I wonder how much Bioshock will sell in it's first week, let's take a rough guess shall we. 750,000 is my tentative guess. What are your guesses?

I wish the site were even more detailed, listing the genre(rpg) and subgenre(tactical rpg) of all games, plus a synopsis, developer, and publisher. Let me take over the site!

Ok, I'll research sales of Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy in Japan, what are the other top rpg's over there, besides Kingdom Hearts also? :D

Yea I got pretty excited about that also! I think Persona 3 was the 2nd best selling game that was new last week. Madden Nfl 08 dominated of course.

My friend says that Halo 2 is not a good game and it's really basic or something, what did he mean by that? I've heard the game is a standard fps and too basic but still sells a lot of games. Please explain more.

:)!

I wanna see the Bioshock sales charts, but we need more time! Madden NFL 08 didn't sell as much this year as it did last year by far, why? Is it because last year it came out on the 22nd(a week later)? Or maybe because this year everybody is resting, waiting for Bioshock?

You can't base the quality of game series on sales alone, theirs been plenty of stinkers with a well known brand name that sell plenty, but not as many as halo 2 of course.

Madden '08 is selling a lot, despite the fact that it's making people's Xboxes freeze. :P

Those are blocked too :P I can access it from my job using a very different kind of 'hack', but it's too much effort if I want to just check something.

And yeah.... Halo. If you compare it to PC games, it's not that special. For consoles, it is a good game. Something of a pioneer for console shooters and online multiplayer. Its success is deserved.

I remember when everybody played Golden Eye 64! :D !

I can't wait to see what Bioshock sells in it's first week! JKTrix, what is your guess?

I really wouldnt trust vgcharts or nextgenwars or any website like that. vg is better than nextgenwars but basicly they just mix made up numbers with figures of NPD etc.

The numbers are not made up. They are very accurate.

I'm waiting to see what Bioshock sells in it's first week, 750,000 copies? :D

Sorry man, but it really isnt. Hardware sales often dont move months at a time, while vgcharts is telling you that they update hardware sales every day (which is pretty much impossible anyway). VGCharts always updates after the NPD numbers come out.

The only good sales figures are from NPD for America and Media Create for Japan. Even those dont take into account a lot of internet sales etc, simply because its impossible for them to monitor everything.
Then you have company announcements from Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony that probably all lie about their sales.

I'm talking about the game sales figures. The website says they get info from the retailers and they say it's very accurate, is this untrue?

Anyways, if it isn't accurate please give me a link to some other websites I can look at. I'm interested in this topic. :)

Gah! Too much waiting to see how much Bioshock sold in it's first week, maybe 750,000 copies? :D
