It does cost a chunk, and it's pay per month.

You can get a non-ps2/pc (PC may be rather tricky to find) version in the shops I thinks.

You can get the game (plus several expansions) for veeeeeeeery cheap these days. Less than $20 I think.

Your best bet is ordering this for either the PC or Xbox360. You should be able to find the Vana'diel Collection 2007 fairly easily in stores for roughly around $20USD. It also costs $12.99USD per month (though you get the first month free).

I don't know about the rest of the world, but certainly in Europe, a starter pack (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Final-Fantasy-XI-Starter-Pack/dp/B000TQOO9I/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/026-5634032-1928408?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1188545428&sr=8-1) has just been released.

So this is £4.99 (around $9-$10) and you still get a month free. It's just a cheaper way of getting into the game, and then at the end of the month, if you decide it's not for you, you've only lost a fiver (or a tenner ;) ).
