View Full Version : Origin of xD

On the Pomona freeway there is a billboard for a new Scion car. The slogan is 'The new xD'. xD has become mainstream.

Where did xD come from? I admit it's not a terribly difficult smiley to discover on your own, but I always thought that xD originated at this site. I wasn't much of an internet savvy when I came here (still probably not), but I did not even see a hint of xD until I came here, where it ran rampant. Wikipedia says that it came from an episode of South Park, but I am unfamiliar with the episode.

xD isn't as rampant here as it used to be. I discovered xD first here too. People in FFXI do XD though and it gets me mad. xD not XD!

I only use XD under extreme xD circumstances.

But the XBuckteeth never caught on like xDorkface did :/

I use XD a lot though. I think they say it comes from south park because that is the way teh faces look sometimes :/

I use XD, not xD.
It's become a habit of mine.

Someone I know typed it and I just kinda took it up.
I don't remember who though.

I wouldn't be surprised if it originated with South Park. I know they sometimes make a face that clearly resembles an XD.

Eh, I just assumed if was one of those things that everyone came up with.

Yeah, it's impossible to trace stuff like this. I'm sure that someone, somewhere did it before South Park even existed.

I remember making emoticons very similar to 'xD' back on Prodigy chat rooms.

I first started using xD after coming to this site. however, when my activity at this website started to die out, so did my usage of the xD smiley. coincidence?

I've heard many stories pointing to Japanese anime, which wouldn't surprise me, it's a common animated face.

I don't recall where xD originated from, but I was introduced to it here. I remember around 2001 or so, back when Cid was very active, a member named Rydia of Mist (lol, hi Bas!) brought XD to EoFF. I am pretty sure, then there was that whole debate between XD and xD, with the latter eventually "winning".

That was amusing back then.

I XD not xD, and I hate it when people Xd or xd. That's just stupid.

Also, I introduced "soz" to Runescape :)

South Park began August 13th 1997... I wouldn't be surprised if it became popular around the same time, but I'm fairly certain that it would have started before that, yeah.

EDIT: I agree with Miriel, too. XD is annoying.

Yes there is. "Site Staff Forum (Land of exDee)" would be it.

I don't remember where I first saw it. I've seen plenty of variations, too. One of the more interesting ones is X'D but I maintain that unless you're mashing caps in ecstasy at something, the proper form is xD.

Unless you're me, in which case the proper form is HuxD.

xD was definitely at the board Watch Out For Snakes before early 2001, in the form "XD"

theundeadhero
09-05-2007, 05:43 PM
Apparently the action of watching out for snakes can cause several faces to break into an xD at once.

Yes there is. "Site Staff Forum (Land of exDee)" would be it.Don't you tell me that! It's no longer a land of it's own. It's been taken over invaders from the Site Staff forum and renamed to suit their needs. Land of exDee is just what the stubborn old citizens call it because they refuse to change.

Ouch!

EoFF definitely got me stuck on xD, and I still use it frequently. In instant messaging conversations I use far too many text emoticons for my own good, but it makes me feel like an individual 'cause all my friends use all the crappy default smilies.

I did steal a custom smilie for xD from someone here. It was actually pretty good, but I don't think I have it anymore nor do I remember off whom I nicked it.

Like Miriel said, FFXI. As XD. Shortly after, I joined here and saw Rye type it as xD. I hardly ever use it out of FFXI.

I first saw it when I went in my first chatroom at PTCO!

I immediately thought of South Park when someone explained to me that it was a laughing face, because that's just how their faces look like o.o

enZed?Fixed.

Someone, somewhere, came up with xD first... but like the rest of the smileys, it'd be basically impossible to trace it exactly.
I've read a few law reports from the 1800s that had :] in them. I used to pretend that they were the world's first emoticons...

Only for like one (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinpokomon) episode.

And also according to Wikipedia, xD is the model of the car (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scion_xD), which is awesome but probably not intentionally named after our beloved emoticon.

I seem to remember when it caught on in chat XD was the way everyone used it. Yet, when asked, everyone seems to say xD was how it has always been. I must have lost my mind at some point. Which is why I like XD.

But I always have to explain XD to friends outside of EoFF. It's origin could be anything to me, and I'd care not to worry about it.

And I always thought Scion's naming convention would lead to an xD model sooner or later. I'm sad I was right.
