Now when I start it up it says "NTLDR missing press ctrl-alt-del to restart"

what's this about? and how would i go about fixing it? It's a laptop also.

Try booting off the Windows CD and using the repair function?

yeah, I'll have to try that when I get out of work. That's what I was thinking but I wasn't sure.

Yeah, something's weird with the Windows bootloader. I think running fixboot in the recovery console should fix it... alternatively fixmbr, though that should be only after you've tried fixboot and it didn't work.

NTLDR is missing (http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000465.htm)
Might help?

The Windows recovery console is crap. I've managed to save maybe 5% of the NTLDR issues I've had with it, and that's out of a lot of issues given how much I mess about with operating systems. It'll probably be less painless for you to download a Linux live CD like Knoppix or any other distro that provides a live CD, use that to back up your data to a USB drive or second hard drive and format/reinstall from there.

Have you added any partitions or hard drives lately? That's usually what buggers up my installations. :p

If bort would tell us which drive (usually C) windows boots from, we can tell him what to type in the file, amirite?

If not I have no idea what I'm talking aboot.

I know, those bastards. I'm telling, since I've seen Die Hard 4.0 my Escape key remains untouched. :P

We could if he also told us how many drives there are and what type of drive he's booting from. :p

I reformated and it's now working. I hate reinstalling things.

you didn't need to reformat... im a bit late but this should help if you encounter the error again on loading windows.

type "bootcfg /rebuild" in xp recovery menu and go along with the message prompts it fixes most of the xp boot errors including the one you had :(

Lies, I always turn my PC off most of the time and I never have encountered any error at all, or at least not yet :p

Always works for me, insert CD > start recovery console > fix boot records, and if that fails, copy the missing file.
