View Full Version : how do you pronounce 'Ivalice'?

i've always said 'iv-al-iss', but i've heard 'iv-al-eye-ce' and 'eye-val-eye-ce'....just curious as to how you pronounce it? (sorry my 'sounding out' isn't very good :p)

EDIT: Dammit! i forgot i was in tactics advance :( this was supposed to go in 'Tactics'

The correct pronounciation is "ē-vă-lēs."

It is said quite clearly numerous times in the voiced dialogue of Final Fantasy XII.

I pronounced it Eye-va-lice, before I played FF12. My friend is worse though, he still pronounces it Ev-liss.

You got the 'a-lice', but the Iv is 'eev' like beef.

Essentially the way you have been saying it is all correct except for the first syllable. The first I produces the same long e sound as the second i, thus:
Iv, as in the word believe.
a, as in bra.
lice, as in fleece.

I've been pronouncing it correctly then. But it was by luck more than anything else.

Certainly better than the way I used to pronounce Mako.

I - Long i sound.
val - Short a sound.
is - Short i sound, hard s sound.

Accent on the 2nd syllable. :choc2:

yeah, that's the first 'sounding out' i was trying to get across at the start^^^, that's how i've always said it :D

Judging from the way that it's spelled, one would probably find it most logical to pronounce it Iv-al-iss, but then again, we're dealing with voice overs from Englishmen. It's just like the an old saying... You say ta-may-to, I say ta-mah-to.

Even though that's how it was pronounced in the trailer, I refuse to pronounce it that way. : p
