INTERJECTION: What a hell? I tried to change the thread title but it's only showing up on this page. The forum index is still showing my previous title!

Okay, it's half term, I've got no college for a week and I'm bored, so I'm gonna play through the French version of FF8 on my PSX emulator and show you all some of the weird little differences in the translation.

Having played through it a couple of times already I found it fascinating how much they changed. Many of you will probably be more interested in plucking nasal hair, but nevertheless I'm gonna present a bunch of screenshots and point out some of the weird little differences: It's evident from the amount of stuff that is different that very little of this was based on the English version, but rather directly retranslated from Japanese. Man, I am such a geek :)

Little note: If it's a visual thing or an item name, I'll just add an explanation. If it's dialogue, I'll try to add the dialogue from the English version, with a translation of the French underneath. You'll see what I mean...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot001.png
First off, the intro: Nothing too special, the text was even left in English. Since the majority of native French speakers seem to be fluent in English anyway this probably doesn't matter.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot002.png
English: "I can't just run away."
French: "It's about the honour."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot003.png
English: "I knew it'd either be you or Seifer!"
French: "Oh my god! I knew that would end badly!"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot004.png
English: "I'm more complex than you think."
French: "I'm more complex than you think."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot005.png
English: "Then tell me..." (And then "...tell me more about yourself.")
French: "Complex? Yes, you've got some complexes!"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot006.png
Ah, the menu. Most of it's just the same but there are some notable differences. Look at where you'd normally find "Junction" and "GF", and you'll see "Associer" (Associate) and "G-Force" in their places. G-Force shouldn't be a surprise to anyone, but what the hell's with "Associate"? This, along with Squall's exchange with Quistis, is what leads me to believe they weren't basing it on the English version very much.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot007.png
Phoenix Down = MT-Psy. If anyone can tell us what this means, go right ahead!

Update thanks to Hyperion4444: "MT stands for Magic Thaumaturgic 'revivication magic', and then "Psy" refers to the mind so it's about reviving the mind, as people don't die in FF8, they're knocked out cold.

Another update: In the French version of FFTA (and possibly a fair few other games now too), these are known as "Queue de Phénix", which is self-explanatory.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot009.png
Status ailments are "Attaques mentales" (Mental/psychological attacks) in this one. Yep, that horrible "poison" you claim to be suffering from? All psychosomatic, good sir! You're gonna be alright!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot008.png
Tent = Red Kross. Um, okay. A not-so-subtle pun on the Red Cross, but the icon of a pyramid-shaped tent is gonna confuse some players :P Sure, first-aid kits have red crosses on them as well, but it appears that this translation's trying to go for a more "technical" feel.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot010.png
Time to name my first G-Force! No Quezacotl this time round, but instead "Golgotha", the hill upon which Jesus was crucified, but also apparently based on "Golgoth", the French word for a Gigas or a Titan. It seems kind of random, but then Quezalcoatl didn't fit and looked weird, plus I'm sure our ol' Mayan friend was a bit more humanoid. (I've heard the odd theory that it was always meant to be called Garuda... anyone able to back up this claim?)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot011.png
You'll notice "BGU" appear a few times in this shot. "BGU" stands for "Balamb Garden Université", and is constantly referred to by that acronym throughout the game. When referring to Galbadia and Trabia, they're referred to as faculties, or usually just a "fac".

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot012.png
Boost = Turbo. Fair enough.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot013.png
Status menu! Most of the stat names are pretty simple (do I have to explain the abbreviations? If you've read this far then you obviously play the game enough to know which stat goes where...) but most notably, "Spirit" is now "Psy". That doesn't seem to be short for anything, it's always just called "Psy". Also, the name of Squall's weapon, the "Pistolame" is a portmanteau of "Pistolet" and "Lame", the French words for "Pistol" and "Blade" respectively. Gunblade!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot014.png
Fire Cavern = "Mine de Souffre" (Mine of suffering)
Update: No it's not! Going by all the chatter from Hyperion4444 and Takara (are you guys Québecois by any chance?), I hereby conclude this is a pun: "souffrir", to suffer, and "soufre", sulphur, basically making it the "Mine of Sulferring". :D

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot015.png
^_________________^

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot016.png
Go to the Cafeteria if you want some hot dogs Bretzels, but keep in mind you're "gonna have to form a queue". I'm told that Bretzels are a lot like hot dogs, but the sausages are fried in batter. (Hey, it was just bread in the Japanese version.)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot017.png
Fujin is a lot more articulate this time round, and I think this makes sense: Near the end of disc 3, Fujin suddenly drops her composure for no reason. I'm not sure if she did this in the Japanese one as well (I know for a fact that she normally talks in single character kanji sentences) but you get a rather nice twist with Fujin's dialogue later on. But I'll have to reach that point!

Draw Point = "Source de Magie" (Magic source)

I actually bought the French version of Final Fantasy VIII when I was doing A-Level French (not that it helped; I got an E... :eep: )

It is interesting to see the subtleties in the difference of translation. I should ask my folks to bring it up with them when they visit in a couple of weeks (yikes!).

@ Hyperion4444: Les Bretzels, not pretzels. Bretzels are like deep-fried hot dogs. Freaking awesome, they are as well. :)

Oh really?
Never heard of it...
ok.

Mine de Souffre can't exist.
Souffre is Indicatif Present of the verb Souffrir.
You can't say Mine of Suffer.
You'll need to say Mine of Suffering instead, right?
So, they can only mean Soufre, an element along the lines of Oxygen.
and something else..

Where can I find a French copy of FFVIII?

Golgoth?
Where did you get that info?
Never heard of that...

A fan-translation of FF6: Umaro, in the US version, is described as having the strength of a Gigas. The French one replaced "Gigas" with "Golgoth".

Your screenshots are beautiful, by the way. =O
Yeah, I was pretty pleased when I got the emulator to run the bloody thing. Had to make a copy of my disc and use the copy!

Well... it is a name. You're allowed to take grammatical liberties when naming, that's what makes language fun.

I got my copy of Amazon.fr, but that was a few years ago. I dunno if there's gonna be any left these days. Your best bet would be to actually find a copy in a French-speaking country.

Anyways, summoning!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot019.png
I make this to be "Purifying Flash", as "Feu" normally means "Fire" but can also mean "Traffic Light"... but who could I be summoning if I'm so convinced that "Feu" doesn't mean fire?
According to Hyperion4444: It's "Fire Purificator", so don't let me or anyone else tell you otherwise.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot020.png
Of course: Golgotha!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot021.png
According to my dictionary, Transcendentale = Transcontinental.
According to rubah: transcendentale is more along the lines of the transcendentalists, so it's a reference to transcendentalism, which has to do with reaching ideal spiritual state that transcends the physical being. Seeing as Shiva, despite looking like the Celtic female entity, seems to borrow a lot from the Hindu Shiva, such as the sari in FFX. Hinduism is a religion which believes in multiple reincarnations until, of course, you transcend your physical being so that makes sense.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot022.png
God knows what it has to do with Shiva.
Updated: I guess now we do. The translators were probably as confused about Shiva's identity here as everyone else :P

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot030.png
Divine Comedy! That is such a cool name for an attack! (It's an epic poem about the nine tiers of hell)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot031.png
'sup Ifrit.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot023.png
English: "The boys often choke on this test when I take them along."
"I guess my charm makes them nervous."
French: "Certain students fail this test because of me... I make them nervous."
"My competence? My authority? Who knows?"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot024.png
English: "(Whatever...)"
French: "(Maybe your charms...)" O_o

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot025.png
Blue Magic = "Initiation"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot026.png
Laser Eye = "Fovéa". I can't find "Fovéa" in the dictionary, but it could be a French transliteration of some other foreign word, as shows up a lot in this version. Anyone got any ideas?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot027.png
Pwned!
Thanks to Vivisteiner: The "fovea" is in the eye. Oh. I'm officially a dumbass for not looking beyond the dictionary, and shall have to do so in future.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot028.png
G-Returned = "Sel Marin", Sea Salt. Fair enough.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot029.png
Bomb Fragment = "Hot Rock". There's a lot of English in this game that doesn't appear in the English version. Again, this is obviously retranslated straight from Japanese.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot038.png
Note the name of Quistis' initial weapon, "Gibet", meaning "Gallows". It'll get worse from there, believe me.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot032.png
Soft = "Défijeur", a miracle cure for "Fossile", or Petrify. I have no idea what a "Défijeur" is.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot033.png
Eye Drops = "Lasik", curing "Darkness". "Darkness" was used in place of "Blind" in FF7, but is that the usual Japanese name? As for "Lasik", well, I'm starting to think these localisation staff are way more multilingual than me.
20/11/07 Update: I just happened to stumble on the acronym "LASIK" the other day, which is a type of laser surgery used to correct a person's eyesight. Fair enough!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot034.png
Echo Screen = "Bocca", curing "Aphasie" (Silence). "Aphasie" is of course "Aphasia".

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot035.png
Holy Water = "Eau Bénite", curing Zombie and "Fleau" (Curse); sure enough, the name means exactly the same thing here ("Bénite" means "Consecrated", which is what Holy Water basically is)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot036.png
Spider Web = "U-Boat". What the smurf?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot037.png
NOTHING ESCAPES THE L33T PHOTOSHOP SKILLZ OF THE LOCALISATION TEAM! (They've sneakily changed the text on the ground to read "Serre de Combat", meaning battlefield.)

Bestiary: Chapter 1

Bite Bug

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/bes001.png

Elmidéa, for "Elmidae", a type of beetle or something.

"It's best that you remain calm when attacking this flying beast. It's very mobile but not very resilient."

Caterchipillar

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/bes002.png

Larva. Oh come on, you all know what that is.

"In spite of its clumsy appearance, it attacks very quickly. Its spell, "Ultra Waves", can strike all enemies."

Buel

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/bes003.png

Schizoid. I believe that's a word describing somebody with a split-personality, though not as extreme as schizophrenia.

"Very resistant to magic; it has virtually no effect on it. However, it is vulnerable to physical attacks." ("Attaques armés" literally mean... ah hell, you can guess, but it's in-game so video game glossary applies :P)

Red Bat

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/bes004.png

Nocturnus. Pretty cool name :)

A voracious (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/voracious) kind of bat. Ready to ambush from the darkest corners, it attacks its victim, puncuring and killing it."

Bomb

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/bes005.png

Succube. (Succubus.) Blobra, or Flan, is called "Incubus".

"A fire monster. Calme, but grows large, possibly exploding, when attacked."

Glacial Eye

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/bes006.png

Xylopode ("Pode" comes from a root meaning "foot", so it's basically a mix of the words "xylophone" and "foot"... hey, take a look at its lower appendage.)

"Floats in the air via snow magic. When its health is low, it uses its vampiric fangs to drain its enemies."

Grat

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/bes007.png

Orchida.

"Its entire body is like a digestive tract. Kills its enemies with its tentacles. Uses sleeping* gas."

*The "Sleep" spell is called "Morphée", which is French for "Morphine", but we'll get to that some day.

More to come!

Mine de Souffre? What the hell? Even in French, it doesn't make sense. "Souffre" is the conjugation of the 1st and 3rd person of the present indicative tense of the verb "souffrir". "Souffrance" is the noun that designates the act of suffering.

I hope it was a typo for "mine de soufre". "Soufre" being the French equivalent of "sulfur", which would make much more sense in context.

Silly French people...

Oh, and "Morphée" is for "Morpheus", Greek god of sleep and dreams (or something like that). Morphine is the same thing in both French and English.

Hyperion4444

It's a question of honor. (More accurate)

Seigneur = Lord; Oh mon Dieu = Oh my God

I've discoverered something.
According to Ancient texte, 'Soufre' was one of the uncombinable element of wich you condense Fire.
What is condensed fire? Is it Lava by any chance?
There you go...

U-Boat : Ultra wave.

Fire Purification. The exact term.

Eau bénite means blessed water aka Holy Water.

MT-Psy, MT stands for Magic Thaumaturgic 'revivication magic'
Psy... out on this one... it means mind, but, makes no sence.

I'm surprised we don't have them in Quebec. They already put cheaply-made instruction booklets in French with the games. It's a wonder they don't demand the games are also translated before being sold.

The only game I remember seeing that had a French version as well as the English one was Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

Hey, thanks for the explanation on MT-Psy there *goes and edits*. I know I've exercised a little creative liberty with some translations, but I'm going more for the way we'd be more likely to say it in English: Nobody really uses "Lord" (or "good lord", as one used to say) except me because I'm a pretentious prick... plus it is indeed a "question of honour", but thinking back now I reckon in native English the most likely wording for someone like Squall would be "It's an honour thing". Point is that he said something totally different.

As for how I got it, this is a PAL copy, I doubt there'll be an NTSC version in French so you'll either need your machine modded or to play it on an emulator instead.

Espessially since English and French has over 30 000 indentical words since the war between the French and British left British being forced to use French, but never did.
Don't remember the dates, it's before America was discovered in the years 1400-1600.
History told the class that but wasn't actually part of the history to learn program. Good to know.

If I'm to learn new languages, it would be Latin and Spanish.
Funny, all Languages are based on Latin besides the Occidental, (Asia; like Japan, China, Russia, Korea...)
And Square-Enix uses Latin, even Roman Numerals.

French is the Direct Decendant of Latin

I once heard it referred to by some kinda linguistic scholar as a "dialect" of Latin, which is apparently a good term to use if you wanna piss off a purist.

"Ring Master", Zell's Limit Break system in this translation, rather than "Duel". It's a pun on the Ringmaster in a circus being the guy who basically runs to show, and a fighter who's a master in the ring. Oh yeah, more English. Special moves:

Top Punch (Punch Rush) - It's worth noting that Zell uses "Top!" to describe a lot of things in French
Feinte (Booya) - I believe a "feint" is what it's called when you pretend to attack your opponent, tricking them into parrying so you can attack elsewhere.
Achille (Heel Drop) - Pretty straightforward: Achilles' Heel!
Forcing (Mach Kick) - I love this name
Fahrenheit (Burning Rave) - Also obvious, although I believe they use degrees celcius in France, and exclusively use the metric system, thus any imperial units are kind of obscure. Remember what they call the Quarter Pounder? "The Royale with Cheese"! It's all because of the metric system.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot040.png
Bit more English.

Proviseur Cid. Nothing fancy, just the French word for Principal.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot042.png
He says this a lot in parallel to his infamous "Whatever". To us, I believe it's "Mmm."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot043.png
Chicken Wuss > Hedgehog-head, but it's still pretty funny. I imagine it's a dig at his spiky hair, though it could have a totally different meaning.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot044.png
English: "I have a chicken-wuss and a guy who just reached puberty in my squad."
French: "I'm in a team with a blonde hedgehog and someone who's gone numb with love..."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot045.png
I do believe "Shu" was Xu's Japanese name. It's actually of Chinese origin but tends to be romanised as "Xu" anyway.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot046.png
Lapin Beach - Zuma Beach. "Lapin", from the English version, is French for rabbit, whereas Zuma... all I'm finding that's noteworthy is a restaurant in London that serves contemporary Japanese food.

Well, after Biggs and Wedge got conveniently blown away, we're faced with someone who can easily reduce Selphie to critical status, unlocking her "Jackpot" Limit Break, yet another English name in the French version. I prefer this name too despite it not being in line with the usual FF branding, so to speak.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot052.png
"Lamineur" is Rough Divide, literally translating as "Eraser" (not the rubber kind that removes pencil from paper, that's "gomme"). Of course, Lamineur also bears an amusing resemblance to "laminator".

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot053.png
And a new G-Force! An "Ondine" is a water nymph that lives near rivers, forest lakes and waterfalls... basically, not out at sea :P. Their voices are so beautiful that they can be heard over even the loudest running water, which is just as well because they need to marry a man and give birth to his child in order to lose their immortality, finally allowing them to age normally. One particular story tells of one who married a man named Lawrence, who in his wedding vows swore to be faithful with every waking breath. However, once his son was born, the Ondine began to age and he lost interest. When she found him in bed with another woman, she cast a curse: As he had promised to be faithful with every waking breath, as soon as he next went to sleep he would forget to breathe. Sure enough, exhaustion took over, and he fell asleep and died. Okay, I suppose this justifies causing Silence, more so than Siren anyway.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot054.png
"Seifer: We're retreating? But we've hardly killed anyone!" - I'm pretty sure this dialogue sounded a lot less violent in English.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot055.png
Biggs: "There you go! A real machine to kill!" (Or he could mean "a real killing machine"; I'm more inclined to believe the former translation as it ties in to what Seifer said before.)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot056.png
One of Selphie's Jackpot spells, "Joobu"... Joobu?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot057.png
Full Cure, baby! I believe "Joobu" comes from the Japanese "daijobu", meaning "It's okay" or "Are you all right?"

Thank you, O Mighty and Powerful French Localisation Staff, for not inserting any early 90s surfer lingo. (The English version famously said "An old issue of Timber Maniacs! .......NOT!")

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot061.png
And more English! Selphie's basic weapon. Very descriptive, and very uncensored: Selphie's weapon was supposed to be nunchaku in the English version but was renamed shinobou due to censorship regulations still in effect in the UK at the time: Even a movie rated 18 (the highest possible) wasn't allowed to include nunchaku! I'm told that the term did indeed remain in the US version, as shown in the PC version: Europeans just got a PC port of the NTSC version, with all the German graphics! I'll elaborate on that later.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot062.png
Templiers help around the garden, thought they go by a lot of titles: This very same one was "Instructeur" in the previous dialogue box! Anyways, Templier ought to be fairly familiar: the Knights Templar. What this has to do with a buncha Shumis wearing sombreros to hide their faces is anyone's guess.

Arconada - One of the French translators was called "Raphael Arconada"... hey, it's happened before, remember "Slifer the Sky Dragon" in Yugioh?

"This large, venomous serpent attacks by suffocating you. When its HP are low, it secretes venom."

Geezard

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/bes010.png

Bogomile - "Bogue" means "bug" in French, as well as being a pun on "bog", another bit of English: The description tells us that it lives in marshland.

"Lives in the marshes. Attacks anything that passes by. As it reaches maturity, it begins to use status attacks."

Sulfura

Goliath - Named for the "goliath birdeater", the largest tarantula spider in the world, as well as possibly the "goliath beetle"; I find both equally feasible. This might be my favourite retranslated monster name in the whole game.

"The 'Black Widow'. Secret weapon of Galbadia. As long as its enemies are alive, it remains on course."

Okay, as I said, this is my fourth attempt to post this. Hopefully now I can find my motivation to carry on playing.

Well you see, normally when something goes wrong posting, I can just hit "Back" and everything I've typed is still there. Also, I need to be able to preview like every twenty seconds.

This time though, I kept copying all my work into Notepad at set intervals. Oh, and thanks.

Well then, I will try and post more transcribed dialogue. Since I can easily take screenshots of what seems relevant, it's not like it'll be too much effort. I guess I can already mention...

Right after the party, Quistis comes up to Squall, informing him that he must get changed and meet her in the Secret Area. She doesn't mention that it's her "last order", just another order. When you speak to her in NPC mode, one thing you can ask in English is "Last order?" to which she replies "Well I have a lot on my mind."

In French, "It's an order?" receives the response "Yes, and as a soldier you must obey!"

That was the only bit that was really different in between my last screenshot and returning to my dormroom to get changed. I still haven't done the bit where Quistis fails to have her heart to heart with Squall though.

As for Rinoa's dialogue? The surprise will begin as soon as we learn her name.

I never really thought there'd be that many differences between the English and French for some reason, which is rather naive of me. If I had anything like a decent level of understanding of German I'd attempt the same for the German language version of the game (if there is one). Thanks for posting this as I've found it to be really interesting.

I do have FF7 in German (might look in vain for the ISOs for 8), but absolutely nothing changes, other than the fact that it's now full of mistakes and is horribly inconsistent... Weapon starts off as "Waffe", then inexplicably becomes "Weapon".

Anyways, I'm gonna try and have the Secret Area and the first Laguna dream done today.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot067.png
With an attack named "Andersen", probably for Hans-Christian Andersen, the author of "The Little Mermaid", the story from which Sirens originated. Apparently the heartbroken mermaid turned into seafoam and her sisters became Sirens. But I thought she was an Ondine in this one? Well whatever, let's not dwell on it, at least we're not playing the German version of FF7 here. God, that translation was horrible...

Article:
"A mysterious death: Odell Burk of Timber was in his field when he discovered a species of monster groaning in agony in his turnip field. Burk said to the police that it happened while he was in the "Samadhi" position, a Yoga pose."

Image caption:
"A very peculiar death."

In the English version, it mentions him making a fence out of Steel Pipes, which I thought felt a lot more random than this. Of course, why on earth you'd feel like telling the police that you were practising your Yoga, and tell them which pose you were currently in, is way beyond me.

Anyone able to help with this one?
20/11/07 Update: Probably just a coincidence, but "Ishtar" is the family that guards the Pharaoh's tomb in Yu-Gi-Oh!, an anime about card games. I highly doubt the connection is intentional, just thought I'd mention it anyway.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot117.png

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot121.png
I picked this out because I found it weird that they spoke his surname, whereas in the English version... wait, now that I think about it, they do it there too. Never mind. I'll wait until Squall and Rinoa say theirs.
"Ah, Mr. Laguna Loire?. I've been waiting for you."

After a long tirade about what Laguna wants to do with his life...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot122.png
English: "Yikes, I'm talking too much again."
French: "Oh man, I'm monopolising the conversation!"

Then they receive the new orders and Laguna has to leave. Okay, so I didn't show every line there, but I got the stuff that stuck out as being a bit different... or just plain awesome, Laguna's a great comic relief character :)

Back to reality!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot123.png
English: "I had a dream too. It wasn't nice though."
French: "I had a dream too... Well, it was more like a nightmare."

English: "I dreamt I was a moron."

Quistis says.
You know, Squall. Having friends, it isn't shamefull.

Delirious is used in a different context in English, so I went for "crazy" instead.

I didn't realise that "honte" was shame, not fear. I'll go correct that.

And uh, all the pictures show up for me, but then there's about seventy of them so it'll take quite some time for them to load. I just hope I don't run out of bandwidth for them, or else I might have to find some other way to host them.

Just a hunch, but are you trying to view the page in Firefox? That's got a tendency to just "give up" if there's a lot of images on one page.

The word "finesse" gets used in English, usually to sound fancy or cultured or whatever. Also I realise I'm not translating these word-for-word, but as I've already said I'm trying to go for the way it'd normally be spoken in a conversation.

The word "intarissable" did appear in my dictionary as "inexhaustible", but there's just no way you would tell that to a person... Since "exhausted" has two meanings in English, either "tired" or having run out (if the deck is exhausted, shuffle it and start over), I went for the latter. If a person gets exhausted in the latter sense of the word, it would mean that their routine has gotten old; it could be said that Anne Robinson's role on The Weakest Link, for instance, is exhausted, but it's more than likely that we'd say it's "getting old".

So that's how I arrived at that translation. If you just translate all sentences word-for-word, you'll end up with something along the lines of the intro to Zero Wing, and nobody wants that.

"That Laguna was really funny and sexy."
I'm afraid it doesn't roll off the tongue quite so nicely for a native speaker.

"Unfortunately."

Then she finally remembers to introduce herself...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot136.png

There's a few theories on the meaning of her name, one of which is that it's an exact transliteration (into Japanese) of a european name; "Lenore". This kinda hammers that home for me.

Time to read something a bit more interesting...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot152.png

"Friend of the Beasts #1

Our dear readers of ami des bêtes, we have the latest information for all you dog lovers. In this issue, your friend will learn something to attack your enemies and help you out of those delicate situations. This power is called Angel Nordfolk. Did you know that to teach this trick to your dog, you just have to walk it a lot?"

I recall hearing of a breed of dog named "Nordfolk" but unfortunately cannot find any info on it. It means "Northern Folk" in various Germanic languages, as well as French incidentally.

This ability parallels "Angelo Strike".

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot153.png

"Friend of the Beasts #2

Have you ever wished that your dog could help you in the middle of battle? Here's your opportunity to teach it! She'll be able to steal potions from your enemies to heal your KO'd party members. This trick, which will turn your dog into a true Saint Bernard, is called Angel Shepherd.

This is the equivalent to "Angelo Recover", and you'll notice an error stating that it helps KO'd party members. Not true, sir! It heals those who are in danger once every fourteen years, not those already incapacitated.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot154.png

"Friend of the Beats #3

Scientists have discovered a connection between the moon and your dog. Did you know that your pet can use the power of the moon to protect you? This spell is called Sélénium.
It turns your allies invisible. Walk with your companion as often as you can to teach it this new trick."

"Selene" is an adjective used to describe the light of the moon, and since this parallels "Invincible Moon" it makes sense. On an vaguely related note, "Selenium" is an element used in medicine; it boosts the immune system.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot155.png

"Friend of the Beasts #4

If a monster knocks you out and you're having all the trouble in the world regaining consciousness, just ask your dog to help.
With the spell Angel Dachshund your favourite pet will find some MT-Psy to revive your allies."

Parallel to "Angelo Reverse". This is what a Dachshund looks like (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dachshund).

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot156.png

Watts gives instructions on how to get to the TV Station, but remembers that those specific trains have been out of service for about a year. I only really hit the screen capture button for this one because he doesn't mention anything about what trains to get in the English version.

English: "He was very polite and kept addressing me as 'sir'."
French: "Why was this grunt interested in that kind of information? He had a slight accent."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot158.png

And last but not least, I just realised there's a G-Force I ain't summoned yet. This means "Knight of the Carpathians", a mountain range surrounding Transylvania. Now then, who had a name alluding to Transylvania again...?

Gatey the gate is called Chadan; it only gets angry if people leave without paying. I haven't looked up the name in any way, but something tells me it's named after the noise of the gate thudding into place. Probably not though, but I feel lazy :P

"Which drink do you want? It's 100 gil per glass."
I decided to buy the drifter a drink instead, and was presented with this list. In both English and French, these are basically the different chocobo greens from FF7. From top to bottom: Krakka, Tantal, Gysahl, Mimett, Reagen, Sylkis.

I forget the exact English lines, but they mention a legend of her cooking and her beauty, to which Selphie remarks "Yeah, the beauty part sure makes it sound like a legend." This time:

Girl: "Between her talents as a cook and a karateka, she'll just give him an earful."
Selphie: "Karateka cook?"

Selphie adds a new line to her "trains" song, about it taking her "far from the zinzins." I bet she spent all morning thinking that up.

Yeah, I was getting lazyfatigue with the translations, but the term "physical attacks" is standard RPG errata, so that's why I used it. Good that people are, as usual, trying to help out though :)

EDIT: Oh right, I mentioned "confirming" it. I was referring to the original English name of that enemy; I know there's two types of Esthar Soldier but can't remember if they have different names or not.

So it's vaguely possible that they mean "Soldat-Borg" (as I believe these guys are partially human) and "Terminator-Borg" (the latter possible because of the amount of English in the French version)

I didn't realise the FF Wiki gave Japanese monster names, thought they only did character names. Should come in handy.

Well the Japanese Fujin speaks in single-character kanji sentences (since single kanji characters vary in their amount of meaning) so that's how the English version got her all caps.

Let's just say that the scene where Squall rescues Rinoa in space is very amusing with all that in mind... gonna be a while before I get that far though!

But without further ado, allow me to apologise for the long wait for this one: I was just too bloody lazy! I've just saved outside the train station leading to Deling City and will be continuing with the Sorceress Assassination very soon. But we get ahead of ourselves! First it's time to wake up from the peculiar dream, head for Galbadia, receive the new orders delivered by Fujin and Raijin and get Irvine into the party.

So, before his failed attempt to assault Linoa, Squall was receiving the rollocking of his life for being such a meany pants.

French: Breath of Hell

One fight happened to yield an "Etoile" (Star) teaching "Firmament (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firmament)" to Quistis... in other words, a Dynamo Stone that teaches Electrocute.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot221.png
After the same battle, Shiva got a new ability to learn, "Châtiment", meaning "Punishment" or "Sentence". Same as "Doom" then.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot222.png
Eh?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot223.png
"Nitro G"? What could this be?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot224.png
Apparently "Nitro G" is what it's called in France when one is rolled up into a ball and bounced on the ground like a basketball. Just kidding.

Incidentally, I forgot to hit the screen capture button for its "Explosif" attack: It was a classic wrestling powerbomb (it's actually called "Powerbomb" in the English version) so I guess they kinda screwed up, unless they actually use the term "Explosif" in French for such a move.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot225.png
I still haven't activated Linoa's Limit Break! "Inu" is just Japanese for "Dog".

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot226.png
That name sounds familiar...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot227.png
Well, back in the early days of space travel, the first creature to be sent out into space was a dog named "Laika". Looks like Linoa's giving it a try now.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot228.png
Well she can't launch her into space, but she can launch her into the faces of those two Arconadas! Pwnership!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot229.png
And I wonder what this could be?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot230.png
(Psst: Did you know that, as long as you know the correct button combinations and the correct order in which to pull off the moves, Zell can do Limit Breaks without reading the magazines?)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot231.png
(I mean, how else would I execute a Global Wave so early on in the game? Much better name than "My Final Heaven" as well, feels like less of a Tifa ripoff.)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot232.png
"Her newest song is called Gimme More for a reason because all you people want is MORE MORE MORE MORE MORE ENGLISH IN YOUR FRENCH GAMES!"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot233.png
Waaayyyy back in Occult Fan I, we learned that Odell Burke had been sitting in the Samadhi yoga position when a monster died in his turnip field. The English version, on the other hand, stated that he was making a fence with Steel Pipes. If you still haven't worked it out why I brought this up, I ain't gonna tell you.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot234.png
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot235.png
Two of my favourite spells: "Booster" and "Somni", the French names for "Haste" and "Slow". Booster is self-explanatory, but "Somni" derives from various French words pertaining to "Sleep". Geez, why couldn't Morphée be called Somni, and Somni be called "Lent" (Lent is French for Slow.) Srsly gyz, you're really confusing me now.

Back on track with the story, as I've been unable to find a Grendel to drop me some Dragon Fangs. It's not like I ever bother getting Lion Heart on disc 1 anyway...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot236.png
"The attack on the president in Timber is regarded as an isolated act of terrorism."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot237.png
"And Seifer is this 'isolated terrorist'?"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot238.png
"I used to think he was a bad guy, but now..."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot239.png
"He had changed recently. He used to be a nice guy."
(I'm really not sure about this line at all: that's clearly how it translates but I wonder if he's saying something else?)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot240.png
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot241.png

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot243.png
"Seifer, you've become a memory. That's depressing. Kind of repulsive even. I don't want to die!!!"

Ah yes...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot244.png
"Hey, Squall!"

Fujin speaks a bit differently: single-word sentences apparently don't go down to well with French translators...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot245.png
"More details you imbecile!"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot246.png
"Ask him about Seifer!"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot247.png
"Oh yeah! Isn't Seifer with you?"

Squall drops the bombshell that Seifer's been executed.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot248.png
"Lies!"
(My mistake, they do allow them)

Raijin scoffs at Squall's newsflash, saying there's no way Seifer would go along with it.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot249.png
"Tell him we're gonna go look for him!"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot250.png
"Oh yeah! We're gonna go look for him."

I do actually like the way Fujin and Raijin interact in this scene; rather than Raijin translating Fujin's single-word exclamations, she is instead ordering him to say things for them. When you consider how, in the English version, Fujin suddenly drops her composure in the middle of a dialogue with Seifer, it makes sense that the French version never bothered with the whole act in the first place.

Enter Martine, with the new orders...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot251.png
"You all know that the Priestess has been named as the ambassador of Galbadia."

...first a "magician", then a "sorceress", now a "priestess"? I guess it makes sense really. First, Deling said "My ambassador is a magician", to which Squall remarked "A sorceress?". As Seeds, they know the relevance of sorceresses as being proficient magic users, with whom they try to be on par. "Magician" might have been a less technical term for the public ears or whatever, and "Priestess" is probably a ceremonial title for a sorceress in a position of power.

Either that, or they just smoked a lot of crack.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot252.png
English: "It's clear that Galbadia's goal is world domination."
French: "Galbadia has a single objective: To conquer the world."

Then, much the same as the English version, Squall points out that the team lacks a sniper, so Irvine is added to the party. In a short exchange that entirely resembles the English version but written in French words, a party is formed and Irvine is taken out to test-drive his Limit Break...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot253.png
...Buffalo Drill. ^_________^

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot254.png
So let's load 'er up with some "Normal Bullets"...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot255.png
...for a Furisoso combo!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot256.png
Kick ass! (Yeah, I hit screen capture a bit too late.)

Bestiary: Chapter 6

Blood Soul

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/bes024.png

Carnidea - A "carnidae" is a family of flies (Carnidea is a French spelling of the word, kinda like "Elmidea" much further back)

"Filled with a gas that enables it to float. Looks weak, but its numerous status attacks are remarkable."

Belhelmel

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/bes025.png

Koatl - Ah, now this is where we finally get some reference to Quezalcoatl! He was a thunder god, and this guy uses thunder attacks, so it makes sense.

"Its face comes with a rotating blade. When its face changes, so does its strategy."

Cockatrice

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/bes026.png

Gallus - Latin for "cockerel"

"Its gaze petrifies its enemies. By flapping its wings it can cast Thunder. When fully matured it can use Electrocute (Firmament)"

Ochu

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/bes027.png

Trogiidae - All I've been able to find on this is something to do with a "trogiomorph" family of insects. Natural history's not one of my strong points, so I won't research it further as I probably won't "get" any of the findings anyway.

"An inhabitant of the forest. Attacks with its tentacles as well as numerous status spells."

BONUS BOX!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/bes0271.png

Trogiidae Twist! An obvious parallel of "Ochu Dance".

See you next!

Sorry about the long delay everyone. I'm gonna do one really large update that takes us up to the end of disc 1, and with any luck I'll be making it a bit easier on the eyes by merging a lot of the shots into single pics (like where there's four lines of dialogue or whatever.) Linoa's about to go meet with the Priestess for her poorly thought out plan, but I retrieved this page of a magazine from the sewers on the way.

Just to hold you over until I get this done. By the way, think of the name of whichever deity you believe in. Right, now speak its name aloud. Done? Good. I swear to them that I did not in any way edit this image, the single most messed up thing I've seen all throughout this translation (and I've played through it twice).

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/SLES_02081_27112007_205122_0250.png

The whip "Totally S.M." is known for its speed and extreme power. The more you use it, the more you'll come to like it.

Oh yeah, look at the items needed to make it as well. I don't have a 9 Inch Nail yet, but I did in a previous save and can tell you that it's described as a "Griffe d'un monstre industriel" (Claw from an industrial monster). I think that speaks for itself. Quistis really wants to f*** you like an animal!

FINALLY AN UPDATE SIX MONTHS LATER! HOLY FREAKIN' CRAP!

Here goes guys! I finally got off my lazy cul and started playing this again, taking more screens. When we last left, Irvine had just pwned a Bogomile (Geezard) with a Furioso combo out of his Buffalo Drill (Shot) Limit Break. Meanwhile they say at the train station for six months.

En avant!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot257.png

Irvine: "Selphie, we're made for one another!"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot258.png

(I think what Selphie's saying is "You're the only one who thinks that!", though I have a feeling that's not right.)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot259.png

Selphie: "My heart's pounding! Why?"

Squall informs her that a very important, high-pressure mission is imminent and she should learn to control her nerves.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot260.png

"That's a shame."

Teehee!

Then Irvine goes and puts the moves on Linoa and Quistis, and gets burned.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot261.png

Irvine: "Our very being is like a bullet; misunderstood, yet perfect."

Then he rants about how they should leave him alone and Zell has another hissy fit.

And then I scanned them.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot262.png

"Rebel for the Forest Owls. Uses a boomerang-like weapon as well as her dog for special attacks."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot263.png

"A sharpshooter. He sometimes uses special bullets. Very nervous in the heat of battle."

Then I found this...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot264.png

Cimeterre (Saw Blade) - A curved blade.

So we all hit Deling City and not much happens, other than some weirdo telling us to run up to a tomb. Major Caraway wants Seeds to assassinate the Priestess, but first they're gonna have to go find the remains of a dead student and memorise what they saw, as they sure as hell don't want the body recovered. Upon our arrival at the Tomb of the Unknown King (Tombe du Roi Inconnu, same name)...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot265.png

...some girls pop out yelling this at us.

We later learned that they were yelling the name of a spell that makes you grow wings for a couple of seconds and float over the ground to become immune to Earth. Eight elements in this game and they decide to make a spell that affords immunity to one. Happy!

Anyways, enough banter! Time for Irvine to kick more ass with more awesome bullets!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot266.png

Velocity Bullets (Fast Ammo)...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot267.png

...apparently capable of breaking the sound barrier four times over.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot268.png

Suck on that!

And then, in revenge, it attacked Linoa. Wait, what?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot269.png

Angel Dingo - Angelo Rush.

Most of her Limit Breaks are named after breeds of dog. Remember the Angel Laika (Angelo Cannon), the first dog into space?

Now for some Dark Bullets...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot270.png

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot271.png

Fracas = "Crash".

More wandering, and we're challenged by none other than Sacr Taurux and Tauros.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot273.png

With their special combo attack, Mad Cow.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot274.png

And the slightly more annoying attack, Atilla.

Which nearly killed me. Bastards.

They still go down just as easily though.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot275.png

"Our destiny is fulfilled..."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot276.png

"...we throw down our weapons."

Incidentally, as well as "rendre les armes", there's also the term "se rendre" in French, which has pretty much the same meaning. Try reading it out loud and see what English word comes out...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot277.png

And so they combine their forces as "Taurus". What I don't get is why they don't learn four pages of abilities instead of two, seeing as there's two of them... maybe they're just not very smart.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot278.png

I seem to be some kind of master of ironic accidental foreshadowing today.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot279.png

Tauros really sucks at jankenpop, kinda like the Besaid Aurochs really suck at Blitzball.

Then after they pwned some more Bogomiles I got one of these.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot280.png

I think "Onde Bénite" means "Blessed Wave". Either way it gives "Water of life" in the description. This is equivalent to "Healing Water" in the English version.

Moar weaponry!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot281.png

"Superior in strength to the Pistolame, the "Nacre Blade" has the same blade, though the design of the revolver itself is improved."

("Nacre" means "pearly")

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot282.png

"With the Mavericks you'll be able to dish out some murderous punches! These black leather gloves are equipped with steel plating, carefully designed for better movement."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot283.png

"Weapons that can be used from a distance offer numerous advantages. This is the Rotator, the most basic projectile weapon."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot284.png

"Firearms can strike a target far away, though they inflict less damage than a sword. But the W. W. West, with its special bullets, helps to close that gap."

Back to the game! We're outside Caraway's haunted mansion now...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot285.png

Linoa: "Is my contract still in effect?"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot286.png

Squall: (Look out: Incoming request.)

As you all know, she asks him not to leave her here... until Caraway steps in, talking about her as though she's not suited to the mission at all...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot287.png

Selphie: "Hey! What, are you her dad or something?"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot288.png

Caraway: "Yes, she is my daughter, although she hasn't called me 'Daddy' for a long time."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot289.png

Squall: "We'll complete our mission here, after that we'll be working for Linoa."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot290.png

"I don't know what you're planning to do, but please stay outside of it."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot291.png

Caraway: "And if I refuse?"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot292.png

Squall: "I'd advise against it".

Good plan. Taurus will Auroch him like a hurricane if he steps in again :p

We all know this bit: Edea's gotta be shot from the top of a building, blah blah blah...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot293.png

Caraway: "You will know that our government has made an agreement with Priestess Edea."
Squall: (Edea? Our Edea?)

O_o Ouch! All he says in the English version is "So her name's Edea." and then "Edea..." Way to drop massive hints that the player will inevitably forget so that s/he's equally unimpressed by the orphanage flashback scene! This is the one line of dialogue I've been waiting this whole playthrough to show to people. You're gonna love what they wrote for "sis"...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot294.png

"The Arch team will wait in the Arc de Triomphe."

You've all heard of the famous French monument of the same name, surely.

Yeah yeah, more mission objectives. Does anyone else find the mission briefings in this game excruciating boring once they've done 'em once?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot296.png

Linoa: "This is called a Geyser Counter. It was in the general's room."

Cheap pun. Oh yeah, and Dr. Odine's called Dr. Geyser and speaks with an amusing German accent.

Quisty rollocks her for not knowing what she's up to and lectures her on consequences and game plans, then leaves.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot297.png

"I am aware of the consequences..."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot298.png

Irvine: "You know, it really does seem as though Seeds never ask questions and just foolishly follow orders."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot299.png

Squall: (Tactful as ever, Irvine. But what sucks is that he's absolutely right.)

CELEBRATE! EVENT! GLORIOUS! FABULOUS! CHEERFUL!

This is my 300th screenshot for this thread! If I reach 500, I'll try and make a prettier sign.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot300.png

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot301.png

Squall: "Why's the Priestess having such a spectacular parade?"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot302.png

Caraway: "To show her power over the Vessel-University of Galbadia."

Wait, so they're all in on the fact that the place flies... I guess that makes sense, seeing as no sooner after you've got the BGU off the ground, you see them floating outside the harbour.

Quisty's looking pensive...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot303.png

Zell: "What's up, Miss Ex-Teach?"

^________________________________________^

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot304.png

Quistis: "...I think Linoa's gone to see the Priestess!"

The wonderful Priestess of Oz!

And I found another magazine. Let's take a look.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot305.png

"The Dragon Blade is the latest Gunblade model. The Pistolame's blade has been replaced with a fabulous Dragon blade."

(They use "Blade" in English, and "lame" to refer to an actual blade, as opposed to being a name. Makes for a pretty confusing translation, no?)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot306.png

"The Walkyrie is a weapon of unmatched precision, thanks to its stabilising tail. Look out for its razor sharp blade."

(Walkure, pronounced "val-koo-ruh" is the German word for "Valkyrie", so exactly why the French decided to use the English word, but spell it with a German W, is anyone's guess. Strange.)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot307.png

"The incredible power of the Roosevelt constrained its designers by forcing them to sacrifice aesthetics for effectiveness, so as to absorb an otherwise monstrous recoil."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot308.png

"The whip Totally S. M. has a reputation for its speed and its sheer power. The more you use it, the more you'll come to like it."

(I know people have been on about how much they wanna see the game's romance with France being the land of "amour" and all that, but this is kinda pushing it. Also, do you see "9 inch nail" in the required items? Well that's parallel to a "Sharp Spike", which this game describes as the "claw of an industrial monster". Trent Reznor's either gonna sue, or send them a bouquet of flowers...)

And now for something completely different...

Bestiary: Chapter 7

Wendigo

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/bes028.png

Wendigo

"Poweful, but lacks and real magic. Its physical attacks are remarkable."

Thrustaevis

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/bes029.png

Malaku - I have absolutely no idea what "Malaku" means.

"A winged beast from Galbadia. Attacks by pecking. Its bites are dangerous. Creates gusts of wind."

Armadodo

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/bes030.png

Scavenger - Yay, another English word!

"Physical attacks have little effect against its tough shell. Attack aggressively to make it lose balance."

Blobra (Yeah right, we all know it's a flan and someone messed up)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/bes031.png

Incube - Incubus. Remember when I showed you a "Succube" at the beginning? And mentioned these guys? And incubus and a succubus are male and female counterparts to one another respectively, which causes me to dread what the French writers put in THEIR fanfiction... which monster would be its "Mancube" (Mancubus) offspring?

"A creature that is part liquid. Resits physical attacks. Its elemental weaknesses vary."

Sacred

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/bes032.png

Tauros - As well as being a slight corruption of the star sign "Taurus", "Tauros" is also the word for "Minotaur" in Japan. This is really ironic considering the other one's called "Minotaur" in English.

"This earth elemental G-Force lives in the Tomb of the Unknown King. Attacks using its size and its massive weapon of steel."

Minotaur

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/bes033.png

Taurux

"Earth elemental G-Force. Has curative abilities, which it can only use when it's standing on the ground."

Stay tuned! I've got screenshots leading to the end of the first disc, so I'll have them compiled for later, and hopefully rekindle the old interest everyone (a few people) once had in this thread.

Thanks, thanks, and here ya go!

After reading what started off as a weapons magazine that turned into a naughty S&M fetish column, we return to Linoa's attempt to interfere with the plan by having the Priestess wear a bad pun.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot309.png

Linoa: "I'm not a Seed, but..."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot310.png

Linoa: "...I am courageous!"

(As opposed to "I'm not a SeeD, but I can do this!")

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot311.png

Linoa: "I uh, wanted to offer my congratulations."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot312.png

Linoa: "And so I brought you this welcoming gift."

I should probably start taking screenshots of the dialogueless action, as it'll be easier to narrate the game's events. Edea zaps Linoa with a light beam and knocks her on her ass, then does some telekinetic crap to drop her on her ass. Again. Afterwards, she retracts like half her hair and walks through the Stargate to make a big acceptance speech.

All in one image, here goes...

Edea: "Pathetic puppets... pitiful yes men*... Look at yourselves! Today you make a celebrity of the one whom you condemned for generations! Don't you carry the tiniest morsel of shame? How can you bring yourselves to celebrate the very being whom you so demonised? Today you glorify that which you have always hated! Don't you even comprehend? I am the Queen of all the Necromancers, and I am now your new leader! A new era will finally begin!"

Deling: "Edea, is everything okay?"

Edea: "Take a look at your sheep! They know no better than to follow! We should at least give them their money's worth... Worry not, my poor, poor cattle! You needn't wait much longer, for this is only the beginning... the beginning of a new reign of terror! Your worst nightmares will very soon come true!"

Selphie: "This is not cool."

*The word she used was "girouette", which is a wind vane. I figured "yes man" was the nearest thing.

At this point, Edea animates the gargoyles, who promptly start knocking crap in seventeen shades of brown out of Linoa, only to be pwned by Squall and Irvine who are hungry for some new spells.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot314.png

Break. A straightforward pun on "monolith".

Got a new G-Force too!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot315.png

Ahuri does indeed mean Carbuncle, but it's Carbuncle in the less glamorous sense of the word. Instead of meaning a deep red stone, darker than a ruby, it means a zit on your skin, or a bump on a smooth surface. Kind of cruel really. I ain't had a chance to summon it yet though.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot316.png

Linoa: "I was all alone..."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot317.png

Squall: (Well you are amateurs.)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot318.png

Squall: "I haven't forgotten your order, you know?"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot319.png

Squall: "Stay by my side and I'll watch over you."

Meanwhile, down in the sewers (of which five miles are plugged with crud and sludge), we meet some more monsters.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot320.png

With the ability to launch a powerful "Infarctus" attack...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot321.png

...conjuring a large pink heart which explodes on the enemy. Kinda like a lame Magic Girl show.

Irvine takes a shot at Edea, but she catches it (and that's after he freaks out about shooting her), so Squall runs after her and meets none other than his high-school sweetheart Seifer!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot322.png

Seifer: "Squall, you will die!"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot323.png

Squall: "You really are in la-la-land, Seifer."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot324.png

Edea: "A tiny seed..."
("Graine" is the French word for "seed"... Squall actually makes mention of this during the prison scene, so I'll see if I can get him to do so :) )

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot325.png

Edea: "Planted in an infertile garden."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot326.png
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot327.png
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot328.png

Linoa: "I want to fight. I wanna be useful!"
Irvine: "I have to redeem myself."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot329.png

Edea: "Pretentious creatures!"
(As if that wasn't obvious :p)

Time for Edea to lay some serious Priestess/Necromancer (we're not sure at this point) smackdown on them! One of them, anyway.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot330.jpg

And that's it for disc 1. Now when I've got a bit more time I've gotta rip an ISO of disc 2 and continue playing. Next stop: Winhill, 20 years in the past! (Give or take.)

Bestiary: Chapter 8

Iguion

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/bes034.png

Iguanor - Sounds like a future Power Rangers villain.

"Mutated from a gargoyle. Uses petrification attacks and also knows how to cast Boomerang."

What's Boomerang? We'll find out a little later, hopefully.

Creeps

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/bes035.png

Formicide - I believe this is the proper term for "ant poison".

"Mostly made of shadow... some believe it is in fact a biological life form. Kills its enemies with its final sigh."

Edea

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/bes036.png

Edea

"This powerful sorceress reigns over Galbadia. Her powers are limitless."

And yes, I forgot to scan Seifer. D'oh! Maybe I have a save a bit further back. If I do, I'll go scan him later.

See you on disc 2!

This is making me feel guilty...

I am trying SO HARD to learn French on my own. I have been playing the GBA rereleases en français, but I have like no confidence.... :(

Certain things aren't meant for certain people to learn, unfortunately. I spent four and a half years failing to grasp three basic chords on a guitar (could never get G, C and D to sound right) and yet my first bass lesson today was the single most optimistic thing I had ever attempted to learn.

Despite being confident (albeit not fluent anymore, thanks to lack of practice) in French and German, I know for a fact that I cannot, and never will be able to learn Russian. My brain simply refuses to take it in for some reason. Maybe the case is the same with you for French, and maybe it'd be worth learning another language, unless French is of particular use for you.

Alternatively, try reading up on as many aspects of your own language's grammar as possible. The sooner you can differentiate perfect tense from imperfect tense, or between nominative, accusative, genitive and dative nouns in your own language, verb conjugation, adjective declension (actually there's no adjective declension in English, bad example) and so on, you'll find that almost any other language will welcome you with open arms... would you believe that knowing the four cases, something I had to learn for German (they exist in English, but are much less apparent to native speakers), will make learning Japanese easier?
From what I've seen:
wa = nominative particle; it connects the subject to the verb.
ga = accusative particle; seems to connect the object to the verb.
no = genitive particle; no roughly translates back into English as the 's in the middle of Emma's piano.
I'm sure I identified a dative particle at one point but I forgot which it was)

Simple, straightforward exposure to a language won't be enough to learn it either. You're gonna have to find a way to absorb some cold, hard theory too.

Believe me, I know how you feel. Seeing someone pick up a guitar and play it still makes me feel sick.

I don't know what it is about French. It's similar to your Russian debacle.
Ich kann Deutsch sprechen. Ich lerne schon drei Jahre es.

I've always wanted to learn French. However, my school doesn't offer it, so I have to take German and Spanish instead.

How may I get my hands on a French version of an FF game? Are they PAL? PAL doesn't work in the US, does it?

They are indeed PAL, so you'd have to get a PlayStation emulator in order to play it. I use an emulator called PSXfin, which emulates the hardware of a PlayStation, rather than the software, making it a lot more compatible with games through my experience, though in the case of FF8 you need to use a program called Alcohol52% to get around the anti-piracy code in FF8 (in other words, you need to rip an ISO from your own disc).

YouTube - PSXfin - playstation emulator tutorial (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ICrbyXIigx4)

I got my copy of French FF8 off Amazon.fr (http://www.amazon.fr) a few years ago, no idea if they'll still have brand new copies. I wanted to get FF9 but for some reason the price was insane, and I've not checked in a long time.

Well whaddya know? Brand new copies of the platinum versions are still available. Just make sure they've got a blue sticker reading "Déconseillé aux moins de 12 ans" so you know it's the French version (that's the censors' advisory for that particular region). Worldwide postage might set you back a bit, but I'm 100% certain it will work in that emulator I mentioned.

When we last left our heroes they were helpless at the mercy of the Priestess. We change the disc in a state of suspense, only to find...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot331.png

Damn it, it's this guy again. Oh well, translation:

"I told you not to walk outside on your own! Then there's the monsters, and you know all too well that monsters favour little girls like you! They'll catch you, tear out your eyes and drink your blood! If something like that were to happen to you Ellone, Uncle Laguna's gonna be really sad."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot332.png

I need to stop copying these files in the order I snapshot them. Here's a "Cimeterre", analogous to a "Saw Blade", which can be refined into 10 "Ankou", the Death spell. I can't actually find the word "Ankou" but I'm positive it's connected to "ankyloser", which means to become stiff. Fair enough! Also, spells seem unable to be longer than 8 letters in this game anyway, or else Reflect wouldn't have become "Boomerng".

Laguna tells Ellone she can come across to the pub.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot333.png

"Charge!"

She gets a rollocking off Raine for going out on her own...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot334.png

Literal translation: "You didn't keep your promise. You're nothing but a piggy-head!"

^_^

Laguna welcomes Kiros, and begins talking...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot335.png

Regarding Ward...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot336.png

Lit: "He never did find his tongue again."

As a reminder, when Laguna and Co. got chased out of Centra, Ward, rather than losing his voice in an injury, simply refused to ever speak again, on the principle that apparently he was jinxing everything all the time, rendering that Soul Crush utterly useless. Bleh.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot337.png

And with regards to "What became of Julia..."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot338.png

"Her first song was entitled "Eyes On Me", right?"

More English!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot339.png

"You stand before the monster-hunter of Winhill!"

Yeah I know, this line's the same, but it's still cool.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot340.png

"Saignée" = "Drain". The word literally means "Bloodletting" :E

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot341.png

"Do you do this useless patrol every day?"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot342.png

"Most notably the Buchubuchus, which my aide-de-camp particularly hates..."

Get ready for this, it's the best evasion of (s) in dialogue I've ever seen. (It's not.)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot343.png

"How many monsters did I kill today? Uh, 23 I think."

Raine offers her felicitations and the two go for a nap before dinner (yeah, never made sense to me either). Laguna goes on a big speech about losing Raine, which surprises Kiros so much that...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot344.png

...his name changes slightly.

In most languages, the letter "I" is pronounced like the "EE" in "sheep", English seems to be the only exception. To get the "I" in "mist", most other languages use the letter "Y". Exactly why they messed this up is anyone's guess, but you need only play the German translation of Final Fantasy VII for some really amusing mistakes.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot345.png

"So good to see you again, Zell. The parallel world again?"

Zell says all the stuff Laguna and "Kyros" just went over, about how he's a prison janitor.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot346.png

"We all went up against the president. It's the death penalty for us."

Squall wakes up, and reflects on his experience...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot347.png

"Seifer looked... like a loony."

Then the guards burst in on the other cell, talk tough and beat Zell senseless...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot348.png

The Brute: "Hey, chicken! Are you Linoa?"
(The Brute is, of course, "Mean Guy" in the English version... both names kinda make me giggle)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot349.png

"Let him go! That's me!"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot350.png

"Well then, unlucky one..."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot351.png

"...my childhood dream is reality at last. I've become the Priestess' Knight."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot352.png

Squall: "...a torturer."

BONUS BOX!

Squall called Seifer a "bourreau". When looking it up, I discovered that a "bourrasque" is a "Squall". Weird!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot353.png

"This truly is a fairy tale!"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot354.png

I have this horrible vision of her shouting this for every spell she casts during battle.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot355.png

Literal translation: "It would seem there's an occult screen here."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot356.png

"I won't talk..."

Another weird one, this time ackowledging the existence of...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot357.png

"Seed is the... English word for 'graine'. So the actual... mission of Seed..."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot358.png

"...is to sow seeds around the world... and cover it... w... with flowers..."

Squall continues his :skull::skull::skull::skull::skull::skull::skull::skull: story and The Brute leaves a Moomba to watch him. Meanwhile, with Zell having cleverly retrieved everyone's weapons in an offscreen act of heroism...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot359.png

"Right, let's go tickle!"

Yeah.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot360.png

"Perfect!"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot361.png

^^

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot362.png

"Victoru!"

The Moombas say a bit more in this one, but we'll get to that later.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot363.png

"Here are the prisoners, Mr Biggs and Mr Wedge."

(I'm not 100% sure if the M. stands for "Monsieur"; Mr)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot364.png

Biggs: "Now I'm just a lieutenant!"

Wait, wasn't he a lieutenant back in Dollet?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot365.png

Oh well. I usually spend ages drawing 100 Regens from this guy, though I honestly couldn't be bothered on this occasion.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot366.png

Okay, 100 Récups then. Still not interested this time.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot367.png

Wedge isn't speaking to us, understandably.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot368.png

"Me? Lieutenant? That's scandallous!"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot369.png

You must have thought I was bluffing, Mr Bond!

Zell asks the Moomba for Squall's whereabouts...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot370.png

"Dunnu. Sorru." (The original sentence would be "Sais pas. Désolé.")

Conveniently, the Moomba's love of the letter U sets off the alarms.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot371.png

Yeah, someone screwed up with this one. "Cabal" means a clan, so they've apparently taken the word "occult" to have a bit of a different meaning (remember the Occult Screen before?) and made some kind of "anti-clan screen", so "The anti-clan screen will be suppressed."

With Squall rescued (like a few random encounters are gonna stop Seeds from rescuing their friend with the anti-clan screen out of commission), we consult the Moomba for help.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot372.png

Actual: "Vite, vitons, raccourci! Niveau, niveau, ou est niveau?"
Translation: "Quick, quick, shortcut! Level, level, where's level?"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot373.png

"So if we jump down there we'll land outside?"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot374.png

"It's worth a shot but if we miss we're done for."

Oh Quistis, your sense of humour is legendary.

Then Zell gets tonfa'd by a Brute...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot375.png

"That's scary..."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot376.png

Squall pwns him, remarking that he "was thinking of going easy on him too." Zell starts to hump his leg...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot377.png

"Let go I say!"

Enter Irvine...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot378.png

...and Linoa, kicking him downstairs.

"Stop trying to play the hero!"

CARD GAME INTERLUDE!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot379.png

The "Shumi Tribe" card is just called "Shumi" this one, seeing as there's only one Shumi on the card. Makes sense to me.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot380.png

"Très content. Merci beaucoup."
"Very happy. Thank you so much."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot381.png

No dialogue here, but look to Linoa's left and you'll see the word "TAKASHIN", presumably the Japanese equivalent to the "CAUTION" on the right. Thought it was cool.

After their daring escape (actually they just sort of wandered off) Selphie goes all wacky about the missile launch on Trabia Fac, so she asks Squall to reorganise the teams...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot382.png

"It's a heavy responsibility. Talk about your suicide mission..."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot383.png

"...this 'Chief' thing is doing my head in."

Squall, Linoa and Quistis commandeer a train and head home, leaving Selphie to go after the missile base.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot384.png

"A Galbadian's after us!"
"Hey! STOP!"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot385.png

"Impressive."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot386.png
"Oh, let it go!"
"Ahhh! NO!"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/diehure/shot387.png

"I hope he didn't hurt himself TOO badly..."

Coming up next: The Missile Base! For the to let you to know, I'll be playing it the "proper" way, which means sneaking around until the guards figure out we're not supposed to be there, but I'll make a spare save so that I can go back some day and explore the other options. But now it's time for...
