Name your most favorite RPGs which fit into that category.
I would say my best would be Shining Force.

Soleil, which actually sees you travel through thousands of years of time and even to Heaven. Doesn't get much more epic than that.

Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, Arcana, and Mother 2 immediately come to mind.

As far as Epic goes, I'll Tag Breath of Fire II and Lufia II on to Necro's list.

I mean not only fighting against a Church, but the Very Deity that church worships? Epic.

Fighting against Giant Sinistresl who basicly represent the elements of Destruction, Chaos, Death, and Terror? What more could one want?

All the above + Phantasy Star II

I dunno if it was the first but it killed off a main character. Said main character was in the team up until then and she leveled really, really fast. Plus, not to mention random encounters change from Monsters to Mechinacal about halfway through.

I believe it is the first game. People seem to forget this ( or rather just dont know ) when they give credit to FFVII. Shame.

I think ill go with Phantasy Star II as well actually.

Chrono Trigger tops the pile. Otherwise, FFIV, V and VI are well worth mentioning, as is Seiken Densetsu III.

Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, Legend of Heroes (wasn't released in NA until the PSP came out, I believe)...

And now for something no one has mentioned (I think), The freaking MANA SERIES!! zOMG!

And Star Ocean? Was SO2 16bit? I know it was for the PS, but the graphics were NOT PS1 style.

FF VI, the final dungeon music doesn't get any more epic than that, and Breath of Fire, to a lesser extent.

The closest I got to an RPG when I was younger was Legend of Zelda: LttP (in terms of 16-bit). I don't think Australia had any RPG's, or at least I wasn't interested in them until I got a PSX.

Though, from what I have emulated and played ports of...

I'd say that Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI were the most epic I have played. Seiken Densetsu III and Super Mario RPG come close too.
