View Full Version : [A] Rye's AP Art portfolio in progress
My AP Art portfolio's concentration is hands on faces expressing emotion through color and contrast. It's in the fauvist style. :3 I did two out of the 12 so far. The first one is at school. I have the second one since it's not 100% done yet, but that's just the background that hasn't been finished. I dunno what I'll do with that.

Ma mere. :3
That looks cool. :thumb:
What did you use to color it?

It's beautiful. The way you colored it gives the portrait a real sense of movement even though the person is static.

Seconded.
I still don't know what you can do with the background. :( If anything comes to me I'll let you know of course.

Yo know what I really like about this? The way the face contrasts so much with the background that it pops out and appears 3 dimensional. Awesome

Picking my nose makes me contemplative and melancholy as well. Very good composition.
I love the coloring! Also, entirely what Miriel said.
Shlupppp xDDD It only looks like that because my Mom (and I for that matter, but hers is bigger than mine) has a huge nose.
Thanks, everyone <3

Are you girls related to Blanka?

The only problem I have with it are the two hands. They look like they belong to two different people, so it seems someone else is trying to pick her nose, and she is trying to stop them from doing so. I would suggest making the coloring on the hands Identical. (Unless thats part of the art style you are using, I don't know much about art to be honest.
Other then that, I like.

I didn't want to be the first to say that... >_> But I think it's actually a good picture, expressive, with vibrant colors. Maybe her nostril is a little big, but that's my taste.
Thanks. :3 I love doing fauve art. I have to say though, the nostril is the proportional size from the source photo. Mommy has a really big nose. xD

Maybe it would benefit from a little more work in the background, like adding some yellow to the green. How hypocrite of me to say that, since backgrounds are always the part I dedicate the least work to, if any :D

Oil pastels!
Anyway, it looks really good. As for the background I like that your using green.. it'll be a nice contrast to the red/orange hair. If it's possible it could look good with some yellow in the green as well.

This is an EXCELLENT take on the fauves' style, I never would've thought to be inspired by what they did to do something like this, I always thought their work was just a bit too drab for me...
Hair looks brilliant, the texture of it is just... wow lol, I just have a problem with the hands... they're confusing...
But still, good work =D
Thank you! I love the fauves, but I feel that they work too flat, like you said, and I wanted to take what they did and mix it a bit with Impressionistic style to make it more realistic.
I don't like my first two pieces. I'm really like the third one that I'm doing right now. I toned down using a ton of colors, and I'm trying to limit myself to warm colors and purple for this one. Too lazy to take a picture of the art piece straight.

My fingers are too thin in this, but that aside, I loves it. :3

I'm jealous of your art skills, sweetie :3 But I can offer little real criticism of it, constructive or otherwise. I'm just here to laud you with praise. <3
Your fingers aren't that long though. :p Edit: Oh didn't see your tiny font. Comment retracted. :(

Ooo, pastels? I love it. The only things that look a little off to me is the ear and the fingers. But, besides that it's great!

I absolutely love that. The juxtaposition of warm, gentle colors with a subject of fear is just delightfully done, in my opinion. Keep up the good work. :3

Vibrant and expressive.
And the thin fingers could be interpreted as an expressive deformation that makes the sense of fear exuding from the piece more intense, like she felt her own body deforming.

lol ryes deformed. jk. its nice. kinda reminds me of picasso. no offense. im really talking about color schemes and expression.
Picasso? It's actually supposed to be more of a Matisse/Van Gogh sort of thing, because I was using the fauvist art style, but I used Van Gogh's sort of more realistic markings in his portraits.
Thank you so much guys. :3
Starting a new one. I'm just popping these out! I really like how this one is coming along.

Do you even know who Picasso was, and what his art was about? O.o;
Nice work Rye, though it seems a bit flat to me -- but that's just me. Nice warm colours and good use of negative space.

That's really beautiful, stays with you.
The latest is great too, working with the mind-set of only using a select ammount of colours can work wonders to make it appealing. The only problem about the latest piece is it's proportion, particularly around the top eye (your right), but that can all be worked upon. The eye area is always tricky. Looking foward to seeing this completed.
All in all, lovely work. Keep it up.

How's the latest one doing? I wanted to say something on the colors, but probably it's too soon now and maybe it's changet a lot since.
It's going really well. I'm keeping up the same color scheme, but the bottom part of the face, the part with the other eye, is a dark blue and the hair is a black-blue. I'll take a picture later, hopefully. xD

Yep. ^_^
In AP Art, we had a full day art field trip... or in other words, we had to stay in the art room all day and do work. xD It was really fun. I got a lot of work done.
Finished yellow-blue picture:

I took some pictures of my friend Shannon, and I used her for my next project. I did this one on black paper with chalk pastels, to mix it up. Chalk pastels are so quick, they're even easier to use than oil pastels, which I forgot. It's almost done, I have to just do the background. :3 Fastest project ever.

I think that was my 6th AP Art piece, btw, since I'm including this lovely self portrait into my portfolio.
http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w200/ryechuuu/fp_completed.jpg
Only 6 more to do, by May, and I have like 5 months until then. xD I'm going to do a second porfolio for 2D design because I want to make the most out of art before I have to stop taking art classes (=[), so expect a thread for that sometime.

The self portrait has got beautiful blazing colors. I think it's definitely one of the best pieces so far. Once again, the hand is a little bit off, but the awesomeness of the face compensates for that. Bravo!
The blue and yellow picture is good and has a lovely expression. I'd work some green into it though, in the transitional parts, and I'd give the background a color a bit different so to make it contrast with the skin.
As for your friend's portrait, it's got a very good matching of colors in my opinion. I think her face is a little bit off though, but I'll wait for a finished version to say any more.
Rye, you're amazing :D
Thanks so much! :3
I started a new one. It's of my friend Katie. It's probably going to be a bit tamer in color, but kind of reddish and sunsetty. If that makes sense. Chalk pastels.

You're getting better. I've never tried that kind of pastels because I always thought that they didn't suit my technique, which is very detail-oriented. What are they like for coloring?
Thanks! I love pastels. I'm usually more of a sketchy person so I never thought they'd work well, but I really love them. I like the layering effect they give with coloring, and they look really well with my mark making, because I'm a serial hatcher.
Here is a new one! I really like the progress I'm making. I hate the first one I posted so much. xD

And here is my new work in progress! Thought I'd take a break from hardcore fauvism and do something a little more realistic. I think that concentration wise, it's my weakest piece, because it really strays from what I set out to do in my AP Art portfolio, but I like it, and everyone else likes it because a lot of people in my class have a hard time appreciate non-realism.
Only 3 more after this, unless I decide to try some more, which I'll do most likely. I have until May, after all, and I seem to get a piece done every week, when I'm not being lazy.

I especially like this one. Mostly because of the colours in it. I really like that you're using colours for shading, and also the whole warm/cold contrast that you have going on. Also, oil pastels = win!

This is the best piece of work I've seen from you yet. It's humbling to see how your skills have matured over the last five years. :)
Gosh, thanks! I think that one is my best piece I've ever done. The only thing is that I've been unable to replicate something like that piece since. xD I wish I could. Maybe this summer I'll try for something like that again.

I went to the art store for some chalks yesterday and came out with a giant box of oil pastels. Rye, what's the way to use them? I'm itching to try.
