One book

One book that you could read for the rest of your life and enjoy everytime, because you can get something new out of it with each and every reading. I suppose this can be taken as a "which book would bring with you if you were stuck on a desert island for the rest of your life?" question, of sorts. Go!

Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov, because I've never read a novel where there was such dimension to the writing and the narrator/main character. Lolita makes me feel like I'm reading the book from inside Humbert Humbert's brain.

The Silmarillion. The first time I read it I was like, "whaaa???" and then the second time I read it, I was like, "hmm...." and then the third time I was like, "oooh!" and then now I'm like "awwww" about it.

I think it's one of the most beautiful books I've ever read, and even if it is a little dense and hard to get through at first, at least that makes it so that reading it multiple times is interesting (and often necessary).

Use of Weapons by Iain M. Banks, Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, or World War Z by Max Brooks.

If you expect me to choose between those, I can't. Simple fact. I'd roll a d6 and decide from there.

That's way too boring. Sure the first half's fun but the second just grinds to a halt and goes over the same story four times. The main character dies in the end but then comes back to life, depending what part you read.

I think i would probably plump for Silmarillion too. Although if i could sneak my other Tokiens in too that would be nice.

Given that only one book is allowed, I'm assuming I can't bring a whole series. This dashes my hopes of answering with any book from George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire as if I read one, it'd be painful not to be able to read the others.

In that case, I suppose it's a toss-up between Slaughterhouse Five and Catch 22 which are both fantastic books.

Now, this IS difficult. Jack Kerouac's "On the Road". It's the book I crawl back to whenever I feel down; it's the book that lifts me higher when I'm happy. It's The Book. That being said :shifty: Woolf's "To The Lighthouse", Milan Kundera's "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" and Nicole Krauss' "The History of Love" all run pretty close by.

If it counts, I'd read the World Book Encycolpedia. I find it more able to hold my attention than the Encyclopedia Britannia. Otherwise, not sure... maybe The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What is known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinnian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion, which is quite possibly the longest book in the world (apparently).

I've got the Silmarillion but I haven't read it yet. :( *shame*
