Or 911, for you Americans.

Have you ever had to call the emergency services?

I hadn't, until today. Loz and I were driving to my house to pick up some clothes and money and we were driving down a country lane. It was about 9pm. All of a sudden there was a car on fire infront of us, exploding. I called 999 and they told us to stay away incase it exploded infront of us and that they'd send the firefighters. I hope it was just joyriders torching a car they'd stolen, rather than a crash! I hope nobody was hurt. We were told to leave because there was nothing we could do because we were advised to stay well away. :(

Nothing to do with the story, another car pulled up behind us whilst I was on the phone to the police. Loz got out to tell them to go another way. They asked him for directions to Tiptree so he gave them. We followed them in the opposite direction and then Loz told me the bloke he talked to was a Geordie. We followed them all the way to my house, and then they pulled onto my drive! It turned out to be my Auntie and Uncle driving to my house from Newcastle (about 6 hours away, I rarely see them!), but none of them recognised eachother. It was weird. :jess:

Never called it myself and I hope I don't have any cause to call it. I have, however, enjoyed reading these 999 call transcripts (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/cambridgeshire/7145041.stm).

It wasn't a pleasant experience. I was quite shaken from what I could see so I found some questions difficult that they asked. I told them the road where we were but they asked for a landmark and I found it really hard to answer because all I could see was a car alight infront of me. :(

No, but I have a funny story of my sister and our Barber.

This is after my dad got a Stent in one of his arteries, but he walked into the shop with my sister, and without sign collapsed.

Now my sister, being the person she is, immidiately freaked out and started to kick him. The Barber, not doing anything to stop her, had no Idea what to do. Then my sis decided to call 911, told them what happened, and then hung up on them to call my mother.

Just after that, suddenly my dad started talking again, and then he wondered how he got onto the floor.

My sisters so silly.

There has been incidents but I don't think I called them personally. When I was stupid and young though, I use to prank call them or was it sexline... but I was under ten and my mates did it so I don't know if it qualifies. :mog:

I used to watch Emergency 911 on tv back ten years ago, but I've never called it myself. Isn't it a crime to call it as a prank?

Yeah I think it's a crime now but I don't think it was when I was ten. =\

I hate calling 911. One time, I called them because someone had a heart attack and I was freaking out and shouting and crying and they are always saying, "Calm down, what is your name and address... Okay calm down, I need to know where you are". DUH! I can't think when I'm under intense emotions. :kaoclove:

I never called 911 but I've been around when my parents have. There was one time when our stove caught fire and another time when this kid stole our bikes and my dad chased after them. Those are the only two times I can think of calling 911.

If I call 911 here, I get an automated message telling me that the correct number to dial in an emergency is 111. I'm tempted to do it now, actually.

*blushes*

Apparently, we no longer get automated messages, we get automatically redirected.

There was wreck in front of my apartment over the summer. I had to call 911 for the people involved to alert da police. That's the only time I've ever had to dial it.

I've called 999 a few times, like the time we were playing jousting on our bikes and somebody got their head fucked up on a handle bar.

This thread just makes me think of that old TV show with Michael Buerk.
