MP3tunes Announces Custom Technology for Wii, Plus More Music for New Year's

SAN DIEGO, Dec. 27 -- The thousands and thousands of people who were lucky enough to unwrap a new Nintendo Wii this holiday season can now play all their digital music through the gaming device with new technology from MP3tunes -- MP3tunes Music Locker: Your Music Everywhere (http://www.mp3tunes.com). Developed by Rodney Powers for MP3tunes, owners of the Wii can now use the device's controller to wirelessly stream their personal music collections from their own Music Lockers. Music stored in MP3tunes Music Lockers can also be played on the Sony PlayStation 3, Windows Mobile devices, a variety of Internet radios and more, thanks to the MP3tunes open API (Application Programming Interface). "The Wii is the latest popular gaming device that, with MP3tunes' technology, actually becomes a home stereo system," commented Michael Robertson, CEO of MP3tunes. "Consumers shouldn't be limited in where or how they enjoy their personal music collections, and we will continue to announce new ways MP3tunes is fulfilling its vision of giving people access to all of their music, anywhere they go."

MP3tunes is offering free playlists to sideload to the Music Locker for immediate access on the Wii and other devices. "To demonstrate how simple it is to add playlists to a Locker, we've created, in partnership with CDBaby, a terrific New Year's Eve music set for our customers," commented Emily Richards, President of MP3tunes. "With just one click, this New Year's playlist is sideloaded to your Music Locker for access on dozens of devices -- with no listening limits." Sideload the playlist to your MP3tunes Locker at MP3tunes Music Locker: Your Music Everywhere (http://www.mp3tunes.com/)

What was up with that hubbub a while back with the Wii losing its MP3 playback support?

Yay! Wait... I have a million other devices that work better as a home stereo system and don't use such a crappy compression system as MP3. And it's a lot easier for me to just set up a network so I can play movies and music through a network to my TV's.

Anyway, the point of my post was to say that this isn't that great of a feature. I mean, they might get a bit of a market, but come on... it's pretty lame. Though purchasing MP3's is extremely lame, and that has a big market.

Just the newest program to be able to do this. I think TVersity (http://www.tversity.com/home) can do this for the Wii as well--and do video files. I use TVersity for my PS3. I suppose the difference for this is that the files seem to be stored online, rather than being streamed from a computer over a network.

The thing about Wii not playing MP3s previously was for the Photo Channel where you can set music to a slideshow. The recent update for some reason took out MP3 support and replaced it with AAC. It is possible to downgrade at will to get the MP3 support back if you really wanted to, but it was just for the Photo Channel. Things like Excite Truck's custom soundtracks still use MP3 files.

I've been using Winamp to stream music (and videos) to my Wii for months.
