View Full Version : Groundbreaking JRPG...

You know it would be nice if somebody created a new JRPG that borrows some elements from a western RPG. You see in a JRPG you get to watch the romance subplot no matter what but in a western RPG you don't have to watch a romance subplot if you don't want to.

Also in a western RPG you get multiple choice romance subplots but in a JRPG you only get one romance subplot. It would be really nice if somebody created a JRPG with optional multiple choice romance subplots someday.

Why not just play a western RPG?

As far as relationships go, I'm pretty sure there are a fair few that already allow this sort of thing. Dragon Quest V comes to mind.

Maybe he likes the JRPG battle system etc. more than western RPGs?

Why not just play a western RPG?

Well I like western RPGs but most western RPGs are exclusive to the PC and I like playing games on a console. Also I've never played Dragon Quest V before...maybe if Square Enix re-releases DQV on the DS I'll buy it.

I'm sure there are a few already existing examples, but I'm not exactly an RPG connoisseur. Last Remnant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Remnant) looks like the next upcoming thing to be like what you're looking for (something aimed at both Westerners and Japanese RPGers). And it's from Square-Enix. While I don't know too much about it, might want to look into White Knight Chronicles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Knight_Chronicles) as well. White Knight is gonna be for PS3, Last Remnant is gonna be for both 360 and PS3.

Persona 3 has multiple romance subplots. Probably one of the cleanest dating games you can find.

I'm definitely getting The Last Remnant but I think I'll pass on White Knight Chronicles because I don't own a PS3 and I don't plan on buying one anytime soon.

I know what you mean, John_912. It would be great if Japanese developers could work on the gameplay of the story and Western developers could work on the story behind the gameplay.

I wonder why nobody ever thought about this before...

Go check out Fable or KOTOR.

I already played those games and I have a Xbox 360 now so I can't play the original KOTOR or the original Fable on it.

A good game is a good game. I don't really care what kind of regional styles are employed, as long as it keeps my attention.

DQV actually is being re-released for the DS, along with IV and VI. I'm not sure if any of them are done yet, I think IV is. As far as if they'll be released in the states, that's up in the air, as we have yet to get release dates for Final Fantasy IV and Tactics A2.

It amuses me that this is said about a Shin Megami Tensei game, one in which you shoot yourself in the head to unlock secret powers no less.

Go play an MMo and fall in love with a real human being. Or try Star Ocean 3.

Get an Xbox or Xbox 360. They have console versions of most of the more popular RPGs.

As for DQV, I can't imagine them not releasing it outside of Japan. If spin-off games like DQM Joker can warrant an international release then surely a remake of a main series title that people never got to play during its initial run will as well. DQIV already has an almost complete English script buried into the code, so it looks like these remakes were intended to be released in the US from the get-go.

There are free ones. =P

And just because you don't see the sex in Persona 3, doesn't mean it doesn't happen =P.

Yep, that's clean compared to an actual 'dating game'. Remember, folks are ok with violence, but once Sex gets thrown in all hell breaks loose.

If he wants 'multiple romance' stories, he should play a dating game. However I cannot reccomend it, since most of the good ones are from Japan. And almost all of the ones from Japan are Porn games.

The problem with Persona 3 is that the social aspect of it does not directly affect the storyline aspect, and, on top of that, you can date every girl in the game and form an unbreakable bond with each one in a single playthrough! That is not clean dating!

John_912, both Star Wars: KOTOR and Fable are on the Xbox backwards compatability list. You can play them just fine.
