View Full Version : The Avatar Theory

Evastio

I was wondering, do a lot of you believe in that theory where everyone on a forum looks like their avatar? If not, did you think that back then? (You didn't have to seriously believe it, as long as that's what comes to mind at first when you imagine their real life self)

Also, do you ever confuse someone's gender because of the avatar they have?

God, I hope not.

You mean your not really Bill Cosby? Now I know I have a heart, it just got broken. :(

Seriously though I usually equate avatars more or less to people, I'm saddened when they change them. And shocked when I see someone with a female avatar is really a guy or vice-versa.

crono_logical
01-25-2008, 08:29 PM
Not really, the way they type is usually a better indicator than the avatar, since so many people seem to have opposite gender avatars :p

When people see pictures of me for the first time they often say how disappointed they are that I don't look like Harrison Ford.

That's because it's always disappointing when someone doesn't look like Harrison Ford.

Of course people associate avs with those who use them, just like sigs, font size/colour, frequent misspellings, and any other gimmicks (Hi The Devil ^_^!) that people use to get other's attention. It's the same anywhere - there are plenty of people I work with who wear pretty much the same colour palette week-to-week, and isn't it always scandalous when someone chooses to break out of the mould?

I don't think people look like their avatar, but I just associate people with their avatar/banner.. it kinda helps me remember some of the lesser known members around here.

And yes, I've often been confused about people's gender because of their avatar.

I should hope I don't look like this particular persocom that we all know and love with the long bleached hair, no memory, and on/off switch. I definitely hope I don't have one of those things where that switch happens to be.

I wish people were, but they aren't ever.

Not really. Most people who have anime girl sets (excluding Leen-Leen) are usually assumed to be male for some unknown reason (at least that's how it works for me). I wonder if that applies to me. I don't use anime girl sets a lot.

I used to think crono_logical was a girl.
Yeah. It's really hard to tell the staff's genders.

I see it as sort of a reflection on their personality. Perky Avatars belong to perky people, dark broody avvies belong to emo types. Stuff like that.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought so!!

I make these sort of mistakes all the time though.i get REALLY confused with people who are constantly changing their avatars and sigs...i just wonder if it's ever gotten out of hand, example being if two people knew each other very well, one got asked out,and they were both the same gender but didn't know it...

Martyr
01-26-2008, 02:28 AM
I totally associate people with their avatars, and it is very mind-breaking when they suddenly change into something drastically different (unless the avatar is either super goofy, like Bill Cosby, or FF, which is no indication of anything).

I usually assume chick avatars are for chicks, and I was also disappointed when I found out that Roto does not look like Harrison Ford (I still have high hopes that he will become a badass archaeologist though).

If anything, I associate the person with their avatar or else I assume that something in their unconscious mind caused them to choose that acvatar and so it is inherently a justifiable piece of identification (no matter how confusing).

However, I do not know, really, what my avatar says about me. I only know that nobody liked it when i tried to change.

I automatically associate usernames with avatars, but then I've often had avatars that vaguely resemble me in the style of another game (alternating between FF6 and the SNES Megaman games, mainly 7 and Megaman and Bass) which is probably why. Even though I've met a few members in person I never picture them upon seeing their names, mainly because they have avatars that I look at instead.
