Hey, isn't there a tradition where, when a Jewish dies, they don't get a tombstone for some period of time? I couldn't find it on Wiki or Google but there was a reference to it on the show I'm watching and I wanted to confirm whether this was true and what that period of time is.

ETA: "Unveiling"! That's what it's called! How long is that?

I have no idea, but the phrase "when a Jewish dies" deserves mad props.

It's a year. Now that I know what it's called I could Wiki it.

New subject: Traditions revolving around death. GO!

No matter what the topic becomes "ATTN: Jews" and "when a jewish dies" will always own anything anyone can say.

And I dunno, I would like to follow tradition and be buried but I think I'd be happier if I was cremated. If I am burried though, I want it to be in this cemetary that some of my older family members are burried in.

Did you know that before the turn of the twentieth century Western society used the room known as the parlor in one's home as the area to display the corpse of a beloved? It was only when fashion magazines started making inroads into mainstream society that they deemed such practices unsanitary and archaic. As a result we get the birth of the modern day funeral industry and the coining of living room in place of parlor. Neat, huh?

I don’t wanna be cremated on the off chance that I can still feel pain once I die, I mean, no one knows that for sure. :Shifty:

I also want a silk padded coffin with a mini-bar built in the side.

If you can still feel pain after death, Doley old buddy, you're in for a lot worse if you're actually embalmed than if you're cremated. Ugh.

I love weeds.

I think they're talking about something different.

My old neighbour Doris was Jewish. When she passed away, the funeral was held within 48 hours of her passing.

Yeah, but did their unveil her tombstone? The bury them, but it's Jewish tradition to hold off on the tombstone.

That is actually a law in Judaism. We must bury the dead within 48 hours of their passing. Which is why the oldest parts of Jewish communities are the cemeteries.
