what type of Japanese music do you people like? for instance I like: Visual kei. Btw if you could name some of the bands/singers you like, that would be even better.

JAM Project is fairly rockin' in a shounen burning passion sort of way.

I don't know many names of J-rock and such, but there are quite a few good songs I hear from time to time.

Some pretty horrid music too, but meh, it's to be expected.

I'll confess that there's a lot of Japanese music and musicians I only know through video games, but I still like 'em a lot. Risa Ohki, Utada Hikaru, Mr Goo, The Black Mages, and more besides.

Japan's also got some great classical performers, too - a really strong following for Western classics there.

Oh man, last time this argument came up, it was a massacre. Visual Kei isn't a type of music, it is the style of the band, for instance, KISS is a Visual Kei band, following the definition.

But as for the Japanese music I like, mainly anime OSTs, Malice Mizer and Orange Range.

Aside from Video Game/Anime composers, the only Japanese musician I really like is Utada Hikaru. There's been a few other groups I've stumbled on that make good music, but nothing I really follow.

I don't particularly follow Japanese music, but there are a few groups I've been exposed to through anime and games and such. Two of my favourite 'discoveries' have been ikimonogakari and Asian Kung Fu Generation, I actually kind of follow every release they do now. They're both kind of Pop Rock groups. JAM Project gets me pumped too.

There are a lot more that I have and like, but I can't think of them off the top of my head and my iPod is not within reach. I started listening to 'Japanese music' a while back when I started trying to actually learn Japanese. While it doesn't really help me learn new words, it definitely puts them in my brain so I have an idea of how to say them.

Really though, most of my 'Japanese Music' comes from Yoko Kanno. Her stuff is mostly instrumental, but there are a number of excellent vocal pieces she's composed, particularly with Maaya Sakamoto (who I'm also a fan of). I have a lot--a LOT--of Kanno's music. About 80 CDs worth. I could (and do) listen to her music all day.

Oh, she has a new single? :kaoclove:

I'm not much of a J-Rock person, but I like some of it, mostly the stuff Kumar sends me, like Mad Caps Market.

I mostly prefer fruity J-Pop. I love Utada Hikaru, Namie Amuro, Ayumi Hamasaki, Kumi Koda, (She's Korean, but she's always lumped into J-Pop) BoA, Morning Musume... and Teriyaki Boyz, of course. <3

Rie Tanaka and Aya Hirano are fantastic, and so is Ayumi Hamasaki. <3333333

For J-Rock, I would have to say Dir en grey.

Momiji reminded me of another of my favourite Japanese acts: ROUND TABLE (featuring Nino). They only have 2 full albums with Nino though, wish they'd put more out.

Momiji will likely recognize them from "Let Me Be With You," the opening theme to Chobits. More recently, they've performed the opening song "Groovin' Magic" for Gunbuster 2, "Puzzle" for Welcome to the NHK, and a brand new song for 'Clamp in Wonderland' (along with Maaya Sakamoto). Their music makes me want to dance.

The only knowledge I have of Japanese music is the Final Fantasy soundtracks (e.g. "Eyes on Me" and such) and "The 5.6.7.8's". So yeah, I haven't really listened to it that much.

Right. Just like the only reason other countries listen to American music is because they watch a lot of American television. Because, you know, you can judge an entire country's music scene based on what they use for their soundtracks. :rolleyes2

Not really fond of Dir en Grey myself (my friends love it), too screamy for my tastes. Yoko Kanno is excellent.

Even though she only deals with one major style, I still love Yuki Kajiura to pieces.

Yasunori Mitsuda is also quite good, I happened to acquire Krite awhile back and it's good stuff.

The shamisen and the koto kick the face off every other instrument on the planet, as does that weird "bok" noise that's made by those things that fill with water and then fall back and smack a stone, making that particular noise.

I also love most of Hironobu Kageyama's work on TV themes and whatnot. Choujin Sentai Jetman FTW! I never know what the hell he's singing but his voice sounds so damn cheerful that it does enough for me.

Oh yes, I would have mentioned ROUND TABLE if I had heard more than one song by them, which is obviously 'Let Me Be With You' (I like the song so much I took my favorite line and had it put in my sig (Dakishimetai no ni)). Rie Tanaka sings some of the other songs in Chobits-- Raison D'etre and Ningyo Hime (the 2 ending songs) and 'I Hear You Everywhere' (random parts in the anime, actual lyrics sang in episode 26).

If I had to cound artists I've only heard one song by that I still like, include Mai Fukuda to my list for 'Tenshi no Yubikiri'-- the OP for Kare Kano. :D

People use to like Utada Hikaru but I don't feel a connection with her music. I fell in love with porno Graffiti and Nightmare though. I could almost trade Keane for them but no :D Still the solos in Nightmare and the sing "Saudade" by P.G. just make me shiver they're so sweet :)

Oh, someone mentioned Ali Project, they're going to be appearing at Sakura Con in late March, which I will be attending. I'm rather looking forward to that.

Also worth mentioning is Tenpei Sato of Nippon Ichi fame. He has a rather distinctive violin-heavy style, and has some great (and often quirky) pieces.

I absolutely love some Japanese artists. Honestly, though, I can't stand pure pop type artists like Utada Hikaru, Hamasaki Ayumi, BoA (she's Korean fyi), etc. I'm not really specific to a genre; I like stuff like L'Arc~en~Ciel, GLAY, Gackt, and JUDY AND MARY (mostly pop-rock), but I also like Kiroro (many piano songs), Pizzicato Five (Shibuya style), Puffy, capsule, Cocco, Shiina Ringo, GO!GO!7188....and then it gets to the point where I can't even categorize artists by genre, especially Cocco and Shiina Ringo. I guess that's why I like certain Japanese artists so much; they don't really stay so musically genre-bound as other artists do, I feel. Even if I referred to several of those artists as "pop-rock," their music is still very unique. Okay I need to shut up before I continue to go on and on about this stuff haha.

I pretty much like all the themes to the animes I watch. i like how trippy the opening to Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni is (YouTube - Animation "Higurashi no naku koro ni" Opening (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=NvE8XO6YH6o)).

I like this one not because of the anime, I just found it and thought it was cool: YouTube - Beyblade opening! (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=OgrE5zIMQ8k)

Death Note opening is cool too.

The lack of Angela Aki makes me sad. One of my favourite songs by her is Moral no Soushiki (Moral's Funeral). Recently I have take a liking to Stephanie (known for the 2nd ED of G00, Friends). I also like Utada Hikaru (Passion <3). Do As Infinity is pretty good too as well as L'Arc~en~Ciel. Of the songs I have listened to, X-Japan is pretty good (Forever Love and Longing). Bana is good too though the only songs I can find are the ones they did for Witch Hunter Robin.

I like some Japanese hardcore/punk/d-beat. Some bands are Disclose, The Execute, GISM, Gauze...

I like some intros to animes, but only because the music goes well with the animation. For instance, the Death Note intro. I would hate the song if it wasn't for the animation.

I haven't got that much into it, but I do love video game and anime soundtracks. Don't know how they manage to create such awesome music and I'm sure it's not just a Japanophile bandwagon thing... it's genuinely very good music.

Outside of soundtracks... I like AAA for the rock type stuff and Ayumi Hamasaki for... well she seems to do quite a variety.
