View Full Version : Everything You Need To Know: PSX vs. PSP

I've been on here quite a few times since the PSP version has come out, but I have been seeing a lot of the same posts and threads asking the same questions, so I wanted to post a guide to the differences between the PSP and PSX versions of the games to clear up some confusion. I decided to post info here because I am too lazy to code it for the front site. It will be divided into different quote sections. There may or may not be spoilers, but most of you who will read this have already played/beat and possibly mastered the original version so read ahead at own discretion.

Also, as a side note, every other secret character, item and sidequest from the original version is still included in this one, aside from the ability to steal the Genji Gear from Marquis Elmdore in Chapter 4.

Somebody to Love------------------------In the Name of LoveFirst it was changing Rock You to "Roxxor" in FFXII, and now it's this. I wish Alex O. Smith would give it a rest with trying to undo Matsuno's loving references to Queen.

Olan > Orran
Lord of Robes > Lordly Robes

Other then than that and the one Kishi mentioned seemed fine, though I just glanced over them.

Do you think that it is an intentional change? It seems strange that Alexander O. Smith tends to replace one reference to another reference when it comes to that kind of thing.

Did you compile this information by yourself? Would you mind if it was used on the website?

Smith is the kind of guy who knows what he's doing, so I doubt it's anything but intentional. He just doesn't seem to think the sentiments of the original creator are terribly important sometimes.

The first section with the translations was used from another source (His name is cited at the top of it) though I added ones he missed and made it look nice. He said it was fine to use publicly as long as he was still accredited. Everything else I did accumulate, and for the main purpose of putting on the frontsite (http://forums.eyesonff.com/site-volunteers/70276-front-site-do-list-3.html) anyway, so I suppose my answer is yes it's okay ^^.

I thought Fritz Fraundorf disappeared a long, long time ago. Anyway, thank you for your submission. Are you interested in working with the above content, BG-57? Would you mind if it was put on the website, too?

Well, it is interesting to note that the two things that you've mentioned that he's replaced were replaced with another type of reference.

I was looking over this early this morning and found it quite interesting.

I think some of the name changes were needed specially when it came to monster names and such.

However glancing over the list it seems like almost everything got a make over :eep:
Some of the town names and what not that were fine and made sense still got renamed/changed
Sweegy Woods----------------------------The Siedge Weald

now i amost feel obligated go play the new version just so i can figure everything out again...

I have no idea what 'Siedge Weald' or 'Balias Tor/Swale' mean. I just know them for the places they are, like 'I'm going to fight in the woods or the valley..' Mount Bervenia/Germinas sound better.

I knew that tor meant mountain. The archaic language adds a nice flavor to the game but it's going to be hard for me to switch to using the new translation as I've used the old one for years now.

I regret that the archaic language was not used in the localization process a long time ago, as I was able to expand my vocabulary far beyond a normal child because of Final Fantasy games.

I agree that the archaic language may seem too rigid for some people; however, I think that it adds a historical, medieval feel to a game that clearly suffered in its first localization. I am glad that the localization process has evolved to the point that outside services are used to verify and establish information used in the localization process, too.

I look back on the times I griped about the PSX version's translation issues very fondly, because even though parts were annoying and nebulous, they were still endearing in the end. The refined ye-olde-English revamp isn't anything I would've opted toward or supported, much less the completely unnatural character name changes. Argath Thadalfus? Folmarv? Ugh.

It has been very hard for me to adapt to the new translation. I doubt that I will ever refer to terms from Final Fantasy Tactics using the new translation over the old translation only because they are too different —

Another thing I noticed that was changed... or perhaps its just been too long since I played the original. During the course of the story where you battle Gafgarion at Lionel Castle, you get a battle where you get to play as Delita protecting Ovelia at the Zeikeden Falls. I don't remember this scene in the original...

I'm surprised no one has noticed this yet, but they changed all the job levels required to gain access to a new class. I just got my copy and started playing but what I've noticed is:

The following require lv3 instead of lv2:
Knight -> Monk
Archer -> Thief
White Mage -> Mystic
Black Mage -> Time Mage

The following require lv4 instead of lv3:
Monk - Geomancer
(I'm speculating that this also applies to Lancers/Mediators and Summoners)

Yes. That was not present in the original version of the game.

I think that those may be the original requirements for classes from the Japanese version of the game.

The North American Playstation release has a much lower difficulty level than the Japanese Playstation release because many small changes were made to things like class prerequisites.

I had noticed that a few of the abilities had different JP costs (talk about having spent too much time playing this game). Did they completely match the PSP release to the Japanese release, or was it just selective things?

Roogle

I am not completely sure. Someone can check on this by verifying the ability point cost of Fly from the Bard and Dancer job classes — in the Japanese version of the game, the ability was 5,000 job points — so if they match up, they matched the localization with its Japanese counterpart.

Wald = Forest

Actually German is closer to Old English (the language spoken in the early Middle Ages) than modern English is. With this in mind, I do believe it's perfectly acceptable.
