Are there any cover songs out there that you actually think are better than the original?

I personally think that Jeff Buckley's version og Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" is freaking brilliant, and thus better than the original. Kudos to Cohen for writing this amazing song, but someone else just sang it better.

Really, this is it.

Placebo's cover of Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill is pretty good, but I still have a very soft spot for her original creation.

Agreed.

Also, Diana Ross's Ain't No Mountain High Enough is pretty kickass, at least as much so as the original.

Nonpoint's cover of Phil Collin's "Something in the air tonight" is the greatest cover I've ever heard.

This.

Me First and the Gimme Gimmies: Where Do Broken Hearts Go, Nothing Compares 2 U, and Wild World.

Atomic Kitten's version of "Tide Is High", mainly because I find their version has more passion than the orginal. I actually believe the romance of it. The orginal sounds like a "one night stand". (that's just my opinion).

The other thread reminded me of the Lost in Space theme from the movie, so that. xP It's by Apollo 440.

Pet Shop Boys version of Always on My Mind. Sacrelige, I know.

Scissor Sisters version of Comfortably Numb.

Also, McFly (British pop band) did a cover of 'Umbrella' which was oh so much better than the original. :D

I always liked UB40's version of Can't Help Falling in Love.

TOOL did that cover of that John Lennon song. Imagine, I think? I liked that. Rufus Wainright (sp?) did a good rendition of Halleluja. That was from the Shrek soundtrack. There's a few others I can't think of. Metallica's Turn the Page <3

However much I adore Pearl Jam, given Eddie Vedder's declining vocals when performing live and the fact that the song just doesn't sound "right" under the current equipment they use live, I prefer Aaron Lewis' Black (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sumiU0u2J9s).

I'm 99.5% positive that it was A Perfect Circle. Close enough, either way! ;) I loved that cover. I loved nearly all of the covers on that album, actually.

Probably. I don't think TOOL was back together yet. But the dude on the radio said it was TOOL when he played it and that was the only time I heard it :] So yeah. His fault haha

That was a horrible cover. With the video, anyway. It was originally John Lennon dreaming of a better world, and they turned it into "Americans are pigs" crap. John Lennon must have been spinning in his grave.

I will admit that I've never seen the video (and I'll add that I have no intention of ever doing so, because I hate music videos), but it doesn't surprise me that those guys would take that approach.

Oasis also did a really cool version of David Bowie's Heroes. :D

"All Along The Watchtower" - Hendrix covering Bob Dylan

"Blinded by the Light" - Manfred Mann covering Bruce Springsteen

"Twist and Shout" - The Beatles covering some obscure blues dude nobody's ever heard of

I'll never get tired of saying this songs on this kind of thread:

Jhonny Cash's Hurt and Apocalyptica's Nothing Else Matters. Also Sonata Artica's I Want Out

Android Lust's cover of Slice of Life is quite amazing.
Mad World has seen countless covers, most of which are better than the original.
Pretty much any Apocalyptica cover of Metalica's songs are, in my opinion, much better. But this is more or less fueled by the fact that I do not care for Metalica, and have a fondness for the genius found in Apocalyptica.

Lillasyster's cover of Umbrella is far superior to any cover of that song ever.

That's the whole point. Trying to show that the US has the power to make this world great, but the resources and energy they have seem to be wasted on Hollywood and war.

AND it IS A Perfect Circle, 110%, from eMOTIVE.
