FF II Origins

Hello all!

I'm playing Final Fantasy II on the PS2 (FF Origins) on my attempt to replay every FF in the series (minus 3 which is not rereleased on a home console).

Anyhoo,

I'm setting up my team as such:
Firion: Knight with Swords and White Magic
Maria: Black Mage with Bows/Canes (obviously Black Magic)
Gus: Fighter with axes and some mixture magic
Leon: Red Mage with Spear/Shield


However, I'm not sure what is best. What are the best weapons statistically, and what spell setup should I go with for each character?

For Guy and Leon, I would rather them stick to physical attacks than to teach them any magic at all. But for Firion and Maria, they're fine just the way they are.

I'm just starting my FFII Origins playthrough as well, and I've heard that some of the best weapons are swords. Generally the initial weapon type each character comes with seems to work best.
