I'm looking for a new Anime to watch, and I'm not sure what. I love Gungrave, Speed Grapher, Death Note, Basilisk, Gantz, Hellsing, stuff like that. As far as movies go, I love Ninja Scroll, Ghost In The Shell and Princess Mononoke. I like a bit of action, good storyline and NOT GIRLY ONES. I don't like comedy anime much (never been able to understand the Japanese sense of humour).

So, can anybody recommend me something good to watch?

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and Hajime no Ippo are the best anime I have ever seen and I would thoroughly recommend them to anyone. And both of them fit your criteria pretty well! :monster:

Awesome, I'll go read about 'em or something. :pinkelephant:

There are quite a few anime series you might want to try out, but I'll just give two examples:

Try Wolf's Rain if you're interested in a tragic narrative set in a post-apocalyptic world with some fantasy mixed in. The story is quite complex and full of symbolism, and the characters get a lot of character development and are quite memorable. The music is absolutely gorgeous by mixing beauty into tragedy with some ethnic influences. Animation looks quite good too, and many scenes are breahtakingly beautiful. It's well worth watching.

I suggest you check out Monster if you want to watch urban psychological horror with detective elements and great storytelling. It has a great cast of wonderful characters, the story is top notch, the animation is quite good, and music supports the narrative well. It starts out slowly but develops during its lengthy running time, and as you get through more and more episodes, you begin to see how seemingly random things are actually connected to a greater whole. The story plays with your mind and offers a lot of thrills while it also has mysterious elements which keep you on your toes.

Gurren Lagann = VERY YES

Baccano! is also a great series to check out, both Genshiken series are hilarious and generally quality.

Full Metal Panic is really awesome. There's also Chrno Crusade.

Gurren Lagann is awesome. Another show I'd recommend is Gundam 00, it has a complex plot and lots of moral grey areas. Plus it gets damn good towards the end. Code Geass is also good, you're cheering for the anti-hero in his fight against the evil Britannian Empire.

Sorry, I can't help you with anything outside the moe/comedy/'magical girlfriend' categories, as I really haven't seen much outside of those topics.

However, if you ever are interested, just ask me! ^^

Full Metal Panic! seconded, it's awesome. It's got both the serious storyline and a lot of comic relief.

Darker Than Black is also quite good, as is Scrapped Princess.

Ah yeah I watched Darker Than Black pretty recently and I thought it was a very good series. Cowboy Bebop's pretty good too. I also watched the first two episodes of Code Geass a couple of months ago which were alright, and I might watch the rest at some point.

Kossage - Thanks for your more in-depth description of Wolf's Rain and Monster, they sound really interesting and I'm going to download some today and give them a watch :thumb:

If you have not seen:

Cowboy Bebop
Trigun
Berserk
FLCL (Fooly Cooly)
Mobile Suit Gundam (original movie trilogy)
Samurai X
RahXephon
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Samurai Champloo

You owe it to yourself to do so, as an anime fan. The weakest on the list is probably Berserk, but that's because it was cheap and really is little more than a glorified introduction to the manga, which is up there on the list of the most epic :skull::skull::skull::skull: ever put on paper. It's still got a fantastic cast of characters and an excellent, excellent plot and fantasy setting that make up for :skull::skull::skull::skull:ty animation.

I'm so freaking proud of that. Normally I would contribute to these kinds of threads with all kinds of stuff, but right now I can't get past 'FIGHT THE POWA'.

As for brand new stuff that hasn't even started yet, I have an eye on Soul Eater (YouTube preview (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=D5qXZIiIFz4)). I usually don't get drawn to these kinds of shows, but some of the people who are working on it are favourites of mine (BONES animation studio, Taku Iwasaki on music...who also did Gurren-Lagann). They mention FullMetal Alchemist a couple of times in the trailer, it's because this is mostly the same group of people who animated that show. And it looks pretty.

Elfen Lied, Chrno Crusade and if you like Vatican fights Trinity Blood (might not be one of those stunning animes but it's worth watching) Also 'Angel Sanctuary' recieved a 5 I think in an anime magazine but it defenitly deserves to be watching (it's an OVA) for me it'd take a 9 for it's really harsh and emotionally touches people.

Vermachtnis

Is that Code Geass that good? It's coming on [as] in couple of weeks.

JKTrix
03-26-2008, 12:50 PM
I wouldn't call Code Geass 'that good' (though I have pretty high standards), but it's a highly entertaining train wreck of a show. Worth watching for free, so yeah, check it out when it comes on Adult Swim. They'll be streaming it on their site as well.

I wasn't even going to check out the 2nd season that starts in 2 weeks. But once I saw a trailer for it, I was reminded of the exceptional pandering (http://www.answers.com/main/ntquery?gwp=13&s=pander) skills of the creators. So, I'm more in it for the pretty pictures and fanservice than the actual content, which is kind of 'lol'-worthy.

There is actually exceptionally few anime that I can stand, let alone claim to be a fan of. A few of the things I have enjoyed have already been mentioned, but I feel I should just say what I've enjoyed anyway.

Most anything by Studio Ghibli has proven to be incredibly interesting.

Cowboy Bebop is astounding, and the older I get, the more it resonates with me.

I haven't finished Wolf's Rain, but what I saw was very good. I'll probably be picking up the boxset soon.

I adore Hellsing (13 episode series, not the horrid Ultimate).

Tasura
03-29-2008, 09:13 AM
How exactly can you call Hellsing Ultimate horrid? It is the actual story, it's a 95% word for word animated rendition of the manga, which you know, the anime is based off of.

Alucard von Elru

How exactly can you call Hellsing Ultimate horrid?
lol I knew someone would leap on that and shove their elite anime knowledge in my face. I can't offer you some miles-long analysis of why I didn't like it. All I can offer you is that it's my opinion. Not being much into anime, I am not into manga by extension, so I find it outside of my abilities to care for what happens in the manga even if it may be the original story.

I found Ultimate's depiction to be incredibly dry in comparison to the 13 episode-series that I love. I didn't like the direction of the scenes, the animation, the music, or even the voice acting nearly as much. If you like it, that's absolutely fine. I suppose I could have used a word less grating than "horrid" (as it's not as much an issue of quality as it is an issue of preference), but I was very disappointed with Ultimate, and I absolutely adored the first 13-episode series. As such, don't expect me to go around praising how awesome and faithful it is or anything. I come from, obviously, a very different perspective.

I really Like the Gundam Wing series, it's an action and romantic anime. I also liked others like Cowboy Bebop, Evangeline which was awesome. I also seen all of DBZ which I'm sure you have heard of it, if you like action and cheesy moments then it's for you. I've seen lods more but can't really think right now. :(

Akira
Trigun
Cowboy Bebop
Ghost in the Shell
Mukuro Naru Hoshi Tama Taru Ko (Narutaru)

This thread is 2 months old and the anime it was bumped with, besides Ghost in the Shell, is definitely not worth the bump.

Also,

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/40/Sailor_Moon_English_logo.jpg

NOT GIRLY ONES.

Not that I'm hating on Sailor Moon, but it helps to read the first post in a thread.

Anyway, in a post I did earlier in this thread, I mentioned Soul Eater. It's pretty good, I think it's worth watching. It's scheduled for 51 episodes, so don't expect it to run on like other similar shows do.

Though here's my little list of Must see anime that you haven't mentioned seeing.

Lists
Tengen Toppa
Paranoia Agent

Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro
