Yoko Kanno is awesome. She has so many excellent songs it's hard for me to select just a few to highlight (because I would start listening to them and get sidetracked, and never finish the post). I'm listening to a tune from Wolf's Rain right now. I would watch an anime just because she worked on it. Macross Frontier, here I come.

Other favourites (though to a much lesser degree) are Kenji Kawai and Taku Iwasaki.

Putting Yoko Kanno and Yuki Kajiura aside, there are some noteworthy composers. Such as Ayako Otsuka who worked on Zegapain, Masanori Sasaji who worked on Loveless and Hikaru Nanase work on Chrno Crusade. As for specific songs themselves there are a few I like:

I would never listen to most of the music in the OP's of most anime without the animations, but I really like the OP music with the animations in a lot of animes. Now as far as my favourite goes, hmm. I think that Death Note's music is really good throughout the show, it goes very well with what's happening and gives the show really good character (I don't know how to describe it). As far as OPs go though, my favourites are Basilisk and Speed Grapher (I really like that Duran Duran song, haha).

Hey, I would go so far as to say that I'm the biggest (and first) TTGL fan here. I really liked the music (enough to list the creator, Taku Iwasaki, earlier as one of my favourites), but Cowboy Bebop's soundtrack does edge it out for me too.

And I'd think that 'Nikopol' fits more as Viral's theme.
